THIS WEEK AT THE CENTER… FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 1, 2020

St. Katherine Drexel (1858 - 1955)

March 3 Born into Philadelphia socie-ty, Katharine was an infant when she lost her mother. Her father remarried and the couple taught their daughters that their wealth was a “gift on loan” to be shared with the poor, whom they fed and cared for in their home. Invited by priest friends to witness firsthand the destitution on Native American reservations, Katharine resolved to devote her inheritance to this aposto-late and enter a contemplative order. When, however, in private audience, she begged Leo XIII to send missionaries to staff the schools she was building, the pope replied, “My child, why not become a missionary yourself?” Katharine renounced a twenty-million-dollar fortune and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, adoring Christ present in the Eucharist and ministering to Christ suffering in victims of racial discrimination. Her Sisters established over sixty schools nationwide, including Xavi-er University, New Orleans, the first dedicated to profes-sional education for African Americans. In 2000, John Paul II canonized “Mother Drexel,” praising her “excellent example of practical charity and generous solidarity with the less fortunate, long the distinguishing mark of Ameri-can Catholics.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of de-light. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conver-sion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

News From The Streets…

Forever Sowing Seeds of Love

Part I By Mary Martha Primerano

There have been times when God has sent the Breaking Bread team into places where, without police protection, we could be in big trouble. This was the case on one particular beautiful Saturday morning. Walt led us to a neighborhood right outside of downtown Houston. It was a small, inner city neighborhood where you find disabled and elderly grand-mothers raising their grandchildren. They are doing their best to keep their families together. You also see children who are victims of various dangers that surround them. The neighborhood is a place of drug and alcohol addiction and gang-related crime. Why did we visit this particular neighbor-hood? It’s God’s love for the people there that draws us out of our comfort zone and brings us to such places so that we can reach out to his precious people. In Matthew 9, Jesus said to his disciples, "The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields." On this particular Saturday morning, we were handing out blankets to people in this neighborhood. It was a cold winter day. We had been there before, so I wasn’t very worried until I saw several teens wearing gang apparel. They, along with a small neighborhood crowd, began to approach our vehicles.

PAGINA 6 PRIMER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA CICLO A 1 DE MARZO DEL 2020

S I CR E C IÓ EL PE C A DO ,

M Á S A BU NDA N T E

F U E LA GR AC IA

San Mateo 4,1-11.
