Larry Monroe Town Hall Meeting

August 23rd

The second 2019 CVM Town Hall Meeting is scheduled August 23 at 2:00pm in the CVM dining room. All residents are encouraged to attend as CEO Larry Monroe provides updates on things going on and planned for our community.

In addition to his planned meeting agenda, Mr. Monroe will also address questions. Resident questions may be submitted in writing at the Village Center front desk by August 9. Only written ques-tions identified by the submitting resident’s name will be considered.

Town Hall Meetings are planned in support of the Administration’s objective of enhancing communica-tion with our residents. Please mark your calendar to save the date!

3rd Annual Grandparents’

Day Bash

September 14th

The Third Annual Grandparents’ Day Bash will be held on Saturday, September 14 from 4:30-7:30pm. The entire family is invited to the Christian Village at Mason for a fun-filled evening of live mu-sic, food trucks, caricature and balloon artists and so much more! Did You Know: On August 20, 1911, a dispatcher in the New York Times office sends the first telegram around the world via commercial service. Exactly 66 years

later, the National Aeronautics and Space Admini-stration (NASA) sends a different kind of message–a phonograph record containing information about Earth for extra-terrestrial beings–shooting into space aboard the unmanned spacecraft Voyager II.

The Times decided to send its 1911 telegram in order to determine how fast a commercial message could be sent around the world by telegraph cable. The message, reading simply “This message sent around the world,” left the dispatch room on the 17th floor of the Times building in New York at 7pm on August 20. After it traveled more than 28,000 miles, being relayed by 16 different opera-tors, through San Francisco, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Saigon, Singapore, Bombay, Malta, Lisbon and the Azores–among other locations–the reply was received by the same operator 16.5 minutes later. It was the fastest time achieved by a commercial cablegram since the opening of the Pacific cable in 1900 by the Commercial Cable Company.

On August 20, 1977, a NASA rocket launched Voyager II, an unmanned 1,820-pound spacecraft, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It was the first of two such crafts to be launched that year on a “Grand Tour” of the outer planets, organized to coin-cide with a rare alignment of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Aboard Voyager II was a 12-inch cop-per phonograph record called “Sounds of Earth.” Intended as a kind of introductory time capsule, the record included greetings in 60 languages and sci-entific information about Earth and the human race, along with classical, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll music, na-ture sounds like thunder and surf, and recorded messages from President Jimmy Carter and other world leaders.

The Chaplain’s Corner By: Chaplain Tom Moll

Second Sunday Morning Service Begins August 4 Due to crowded conditions in the chapel, we will add a second morning worship service in August. First service will be at 9:00am and the second service will be at 10:15am.

Both worship services will include great hymns of faith, communion, and a Bible-based message. Choose which service you would like to attend and come prepared to be blessed. Please help us keep growing by inviting others to join you and attending one of our two morning services. We will continue our 7:00pm worship as well. Choose a time to worship the Lord. You will be most welcome! Read the New Testament in 2019 Read the New Testament through in 2019 continues. Just by reading a chapter or two per day, you can read through the entire New Testament in twelve months. Pick up a reading schedule outside my office. Bible Study in the Chapel August 7 & 21 We have just begun our study of the book of Job. Come join us at 10:00am in the chapel for this informal, in-depth and encouraging study of God’s Word. Encouragement Group August 13 & 27 Our Encouragement Group is meeting on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month at 2:00pm in the Chaplain’s Lounge. Meetings are open to everyone. Men’s Discussion Group August 14 Men, join us at 10:00am in the Chaplain’s Lounge. Retired Minister’s Fellowship August 20 The fellowship is great . . . and the discussions encouraging! All retired ministers are invited to join us in the Chaplain’s Lounge at 10:00am.

Sunday Bible School Class A Bible School class meets every Sunday at 9:00am in the craft room. This is an excellent time to study God’s Word with others and then attend morning worship in the chapel.

Caregiver Support Group – The group will meet on August 1, 2019 in the Chaplain’s Lounge.

Parkinson’s Support Group - Exercise and group discussion related to Parkinson’s Disease will be held

on August 12th and 26th in the Renewal Fitness Center. This group is for anyone with Parkinson’s or for

those who are caring for someone with Parkinson’s.

File of Life – It is important to keep the information on your File of Life up to date. A copy should be kept in

the magnetic pouch on your refrigerator as well as one in the Social Service office. Blank copies can be

picked up from the receptionist or in the Social Service office.

Care Pendants Reminder- PLEASE use the Care Pendants (located on hooks next to the poster- main entrance) if you are alone in RFC. This will ensure that your location will be clear in the event of a fall or other emergency. RENEW YOU Fitness Challenge Update - 44 people have signed up for the 8-week challenge of getting at least 60 minutes per week of cardio activity (walking, NuStep, or bikes). There is a chart in the RFC tracking weekly goals and for each week you get a dot it is a chance to win one of the two prizes at the end of the 8 weeks. Class attendance does not count for this challenge, but if you bring a friend from the Village to class, you earn one more chance to win. Participants report in on Monday or Friday to let me know if they have hit the minimum 60 minutes in the 7 days. It’s not too late to join! Better Together - Class attendance has been good and the support and accountability that comes with it is priceless. Feel free to try any classes before you pay for them. I’m inspired by the people in this community caring for each other. I am considering adding a Friday 10:30 am class to encourage HEALTHY EATING HABITS if at least 8 people would be interested. We would be able to set those SMART goals and encourage each other to make healthier choices. Please let me know before 8/10 if you are interested.

Women in Ministry Fellowship All women who have been involved in ministry (as a preacher’s wife, a staff member at a church or Bible college, etc.) are invited to meet for fellowship and encouragement on Wednesday, September 11, at 2:00pm in the Chaplain’s Lounge.

2019 CBA Foundation Hall of Faith Banquet

The CBA Foundation will honor the following Chris-tian leaders at its Hall of Faith banquet which is scheduled for September 13th at 7:00pm at The Manor House in Mason, OH. The honorees being inducted this year are:

Tom Claibourne, Preaching Minister at Bethlehem Church of Christ in rural Adams County, OH since 1979. He writes a monthly column for the Restora-tion Herald and has been a contributing writer for The Lookout and Christian Standard.

Kitty Garner, an executive with Omnicare, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of CVS Health Corporation. Her connection with the ministry of CVC spans many years. She currently serves on the board of the Christian Benevolent Association and previously

served on the board of the Christian Village at Mason as well as the board of the Christian Village at Mt. Healthy.

Shawn McMullen,editor of The Lookout, a publica-tion of Christian Standard Media, and is Minister of the Vevay Church of Christ, Vevay, IN. He also serves as Chair of the Board for The Christian Village at Mt. Healthy.

The Cincinnati Youth Choir under the direction of Robyn Reeves Lana, daughter of Garden Home resi-dents Dick and Bobbie Reeves. The choir will be performing at the beginning of the banquet.

The price of admission to the banquet is $20 per person. Tables of 8 may be purchased for $160. Transportation will be provided if needed. You may sign up for the Hall of Faith Banquet at the regularly scheduled sign-ups in the CVM Apartment Lounge or online at www.christianvillages.org/HOF. Senior’s Day at Hillsboro Family Camp

On Friday, September 27th, we are sponsoring a Seniors Day at Hillsboro Family Camp. This event will feature singing by Larry Monroe, our CEO, and Art Bush. We will have a message brought to us by Wally Rendel from Lexington, KY. Lunch will be provided by Ponderosa. This is a free event with optional love offerings. Any of our residents who might want to go please sign up during sign up day. Transportation details are still being determined. We aim to leave around 9am and return at approximately 3pm.

The Latest Village News

The Maintenance Department has developed a new smoke detector that automatically shuts off when you yell: “I’m just cooking.” I told Maintenance that our florescent light was humming. They said that maybe it doesn’t know the words. Maintenance thought they would try a discount exterminator until the guy showed up with a rolled-up magazine.

They are considering spay-neutering the coat hangers outside the chapel. When we moved into the Village, Maintenance told me I’d just need two things: WD-40 and Duct Tape ---“If it doesn’t move and should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn’t, use the Duct Tape.” The new Garden Home design has no kitchenP.just vending machines and a large trash can. They include walk-in closetsP.if you try hard enough, and EXTRA LARGE medicine cabinets. New games are being introduced in the Health Care area: “Don Juan-To-Be and Oldielocks”. Word has it that there was a “cane” mutiny in the apartment area last when Wade Deep was raising his cane.

There is a growing request for valet parking in the Village. Valets don’t forget where they parked your car. Everyone is looking forward to Tracy’s Village trip to Poodunk, Kentucky to view the famous “Hill of Beans”. Maybe we’ll finally find out what it is worth. By the way, this is where the toothbrush was in-vented. Anywhere else, it would have been called a teeth brush.

Arthur Rities was signing books in our library until Mary Ann kicked him out. The six dwarfs called Wendy and said they wanted their Grumpy back, she asked: “Which one”. While having lunch in the Dining Room last week, I asked our waitress if I could see the dessert tray. She replied: “Not until you finish your vegetables!”
