The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center is a Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) accredited by the National Children’s Alliance. CACs are a nationally-recognized model for coordinating the response when there is a concern for child abuse. Accredited CACs utilize a highly skilled and effective multidisciplinary team approach to child abuse investigation, prosecution, and treatment. At DNLCC, our trained, licensed clinicians use the CAC model for helping to identify whether abuse has occurred. Evidence-based treatment programs like those at DNLCC reduce symptoms among children who are experiencing distress and also reduce the likelihood of delinquent and/or criminal behavior as a result of untreated trauma associated with abuse.

DNLCC Mission:To keep children safe from abuse and trauma, and when either occur, to work with our community to bring healing to these children and their families.

DNLCC Vision:To be THE Leading Child Abuse & Trauma Center, Changing the World -- One Child at a Time!

PARTNERING WITH OUR COMMUNITYDear Friends and Supporters of The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center:

When you made a decision to support The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center your commitment last year helped:

• Provide services to 1,570 children and their families who had concerns for experiencing abuse• Fund cutting edge research to improve diagnosis and treatment methods• Train and improve a dedicated staff of professionals whose passion and expertise in the field of

child maltreatment has received national recognition• Fulfill the Center’s vision to “be THE leading Child Abuse and Trauma Center, Changing the

World – One Child at a Time”

The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center (DNLCC) serves the Charleston and Berkeley communities. Since its inception in 1991, DNLCC has provided healing to more than 23,000 children. Estimates show that over 14,000 children will experience abuse in our communities next year. We know that currently, only about 1 out of every 10 child victims discloses abuse in childhood. For these brave children, we are here as a resource for them and their family. Unfortunately, the need is ever growing. This year, we experienced a challenge in demand and an increased wait time for services. As a result of the generosity of our community, we were able to hire an additional therapist and reduce that wait time significantly.

To provide answers and healing, the staff at DNLCC employs state of the art interview and treatment methods. Your support allows our staff to be trained in the latest and most effective interview and therapeutic practices. We do this to minimize further trauma for the child by quickly identifying whether abuse has occurred, and then focusing on therapies that are proven to work. It is a privilege for both of us to work with a staff so compassionate, collaborative and committed to excellence. We thank them for their unwavering commitment to keeping children safe from abuse and trauma, and when it occurs, bringing healing to these children and their family.

DNLCC is regarded as a national leader in the field of evidence-based treatments. We are honored to work in partnership with MUSC, the Duke Foundation and federal grantors to develop the most effective treatments and break the cycle of abuse. Here at the DNLCC, we evaluate the effectiveness of these therapies in reducing typical problems that child victims have, such as depression, post-traumatic disorder, and anxiety. We are proactively furthering this approach by evaluating our collaboration with the schools in order to reduce the impact of trauma on children’s academic performance.

In an effort to share the expertise we continue to develop and promote collaboration, we are also pleased to announce that we will be hosting a national professional conference, the Charleston Child Trauma Conference, October 18-21, 2016 at the Francis Marion Hotel. This conference will draw national speakers and allow us to improve outcomes for children broadly.

Please know that your generous support fuels us to work ever harder to achieve our vision to be THE leading Child Abuse and Trauma Center, Changing the World – One Child at a Time. While the pain may seem unimaginable to us at times, with your support, we will remain THE place of healing – One Child at a Time.

Volunteer Spotlight: Fallon SposatoVolunteers are a critical part of all aspects of the work of DNLCC and Fallon Sposato is a shining example

of the impact volunteers have on our work. Giving back has always been part of Fallon’s life. As a college student, Fallon was actively involved with her sorority’s charity, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and she volunteered with Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital. When she graduated in 2010 and moved to Charleston to work for Wells Fargo, she sought out volunteer opportunities. Continuing her interest in working with children’s charities seemed natural, so she sought out DNLCC.

“I was drawn to DNLCC because the organization was proactive in offering more volunteer opportunities for young professionals,” Fallon explained. Fallon has chaired the planning committee for one of our largest

fundraisers, the Bus Shed Bash, for two years and has been actively involved in our annual April awareness campaign. She currently is serving as the inaugural president of the Dee Norton Society, a growing group of

young professionals that offers participation in a unique mix of social, educational, and volunteer opportunities benefitting The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center.

Fallon appreciates being able “to have a large and positive impact for DNLCC as a young professional. For example, the Bus Shed Bash—which targets my demographic—raised $20,000 this year to support the work of DNLCC.”

We applaud how Fallon has embraced her role as an advocate for the children we serve, as well as her service as an ambassador for DNLCC among other young professionals in the Charleston community.

Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Beth FechhelmThe Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center (DNLCC) is a safe, welcoming place where children who have been abused or neglected can get the help and support they need. Volunteers like Mary Beth Fechhelm are a vital component of the services DNLCC provides to each child and family that enters our door. Mary Beth has always enjoyed working with children, and after her grandchildren grew older, she began searching for volunteer opportunities that would allow her to continue to work and interact with children, and to help improve each child’s quality of life in the process.

Mary Beth’s search led her to the DNLCC website. “The more I read,” Mary Beth explains, ”the more convinced I became that DNLCC would be a good fit for me.” While she enjoys working with children of all

ages, she especially enjoys working with younger children ages toddler through 9 years old. As a Volunteer Child Advocate at DNLCC, Mary Beth observes and reports any unacceptable or suspicious behavior while ensuring a safe

and secure environment for the children, but that means she “also gets to play and interact with the kids and guardians alike.” Mary Beth enthusiastically reports that this latter aspect of being a Child Advocate is “what keeps me wanting to return.”

Mary Beth’s bright countenance and caring personality naturally draws children to her, and she always feels like she has made an impact on and a difference to the children, no matter how slight. We are honored and proud to have such committed volunteers as Mary Beth at DNLCC!

COLLABORATIONSpotlight on Collaboration: Debbie Herring-LashPartnerships with our multidisciplinary community agencies are the foundation for how DNLCC coordinates services for children and families, ultimately resulting in a more efficient response and better outcomes for children. DNLCC has a longstanding partnership with the Ninth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office and works closely with their team assigned to child maltreatment cases. Assistant Solicitor Debbie Herring-Lash has prosecuted these cases with the Solicitor’s Office since 1990, including some of the most severe and heinous cases of abuse. However, Debbie’s dedication to working with children and families, as well as her relationship with DNLCC, began long before she was an attorney. After working at DSS for many years, Debbie joined the Solicitor’s Office as the Solicitor’s Investigator. During that time, the seeds of multidisciplinary collaboration were planted. “We started meeting and talking about these cases, basically using the Multidisciplinary Taskforce approach, back in the mid 1980s,” Debbie recalls. “There was a group of us that included law enforcement, therapists, and physicians, and we would get together at various locations to discuss cases.” Debbie eventually pursued a law

degree, and resumed her work with the team after returning to the community as Assistant Solicitor in 1990.

Over the course of these many years, DNLCC’s collaboration with Debbie has resulted in a

close working relationship on individual cases and on more global issues affecting child abuse investigations. In recent years there have been changes in the way forensic interviewers can testify in criminal court cases in South Carolina. As case law evolves, collaboration has been beneficial both to Debbie and to the DNLCC forensic interviewers as they meet and discuss the implications of such changes, incorporating new knowledge to improve testimony and case outcomes. Of the services provided by DNLCC, Debbie says she hears and sees good things from families. “The kids who have been to DNLCC do much better than the kids who do not have a forensic interview there or who never receive any mental health treatment.”

The multidisciplinary, coordinated approach of the team of DNLCC partners is centered on collaboration, a value that Debbie Herring-Lash has demonstrated from the beginning. In looking to the future, Debbie’s goal, like so many of our partners, is to continue to provide child maltreatment victims and their families with the best team response possible. “We will just get better and better,” she says, “and DNLCC is committed to this very same standard.”

“The kids who have been to DNLCC do much better than the kids who do not have

a forensic interview there or who never receive any mental health treatment.”

Partnering With Our Community

by Carole Campbell Swiecicki, Ph.D.

One of the founding values of DNLCC is Collaboration, and it continues to guide our organization today. We partner with our community in many ways throughout the year. Every day, we collaborate through taking referrals from the over 30 community partner agencies with which we have formal agreements. Weekly, we have case review staffings with our multidisciplinary partner agencies to coordinate services for children and families in the Lowcountry.

In 2014, we also began exciting new projects through our community partnerships. First, we convened a working committee to address Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) in the Lowcountry. Our working committee includes partners from Law Enforcement, Departments of Social Services and Juvenile Justice, Charleston County School District, as well as DNLCC and MUSC Pediatrics staff. This project, with funding from the National Children’s Alliance, will result in an interagency guide to address the problem of child sex trafficking and exploitation. We have learned through our work and that of our partners, that child sex trafficking is happening in our community. This committee has made great progress to help these children’s needs for services!

Another community partnership is addressing the needs of children in Charleston and Berkeley counties who display sexual behavior problems. We obtained funding in October 2014 from the federal Office of Juvenile Justice Programs, in order to further develop our community partnerships to reduce sexual behavior problems among youth. As a result, we will have greater capacity to address the needs of the child victims of youth who act out.

Lastly, we had a successful partnership with our community to raise awareness of child abuse and the services provided at DNLCC through our 2014 April Child Abuse Awareness campaign. Through community events, mailings, media interviews, flyers, and our DNLCC Movie Night at Cinebarre, we reached over 125,000 local residents!

We are here as a resource for our community and a partner to our community. We value and rely upon the collaboration of both of supporters and professional partners. We look forward to continuing these partnerships in 2015!
