PILGRIMS VISIT 2G-W

T he girls of 2G-W read the novel Molly’s Pilgrim. They created and designed their own modern pilgrims as a culminating project. Thanks to Mrs. Dreyfuss for her help and creativity!

1B HOLDS ELECTIONS

O n November 2, 2010, the first grade boys held their classroom election! The post the boys were vying for was that of line leader for the whole month of November. They had to nominate their classmates and then had to campaign for them as well. When pointing out the qualities that a good line leader would have, they mentioned such traits as, "listening to the teacher to know when to line up", "behaving on line", "getting along well with the other boys in the class", and finally, "being strong enough to hold the door open". After a very close vote conducted by secret ballot and an amazing job by our three nominees, it was determined that Yehuda Bloom would be the right boy for the job. Mazal tov to Yehuda- you're doing an amazing job and we're proud that you won the election!

Dear Parents,

At the end of this week’s Parsha, tucked away in an obscure Rashi, is an enormous lesson with life-long significance.

In telling us how Yitzchak sent Yaakov away, to Lavan’s house, and identifying Lavan as Rivkah’s brother, the Pasuk

concludes by mentioning that Rivkah is the mother of Yaakov and Esav. .אחי רבקה א יעקב ועשו. . ..ה וישלח יצחק את יעקב:כח ֵאינִי יֵדַע ַמה ְמַלְמֵדנ :ה ֵא יעקב ועשו"י ד"רש

Rashi, commenting on “ Rivkah, the mother of Yaakov and Esav,” says four immortal words: “I don’t know what

(this) is teaching us.” What honesty! Why say anything? Even the Sifsei Chachomim, supercommentary on Rashi,

asks what’s the purpose of this Rashi. He further points out that Rashi knew of several Pshatim, explanations, but

couldn’t decide which was the most accurate one. This makes the question even stronger – why wasn’t Rashi more

discreet about his not knowing it 100%, why didn’t he state his uncertainty in a less obvious, less incriminating fash-

ion? Why not leave his thoughts unspoken – after all, Rashi doesn’t comment on most words in the Chumash?

Rashi, the master teacher, is teaching us intellectual honesty and integrity. Our trust and reliance upon him is greatly

enhanced, because we see his uncompromising yearning for truth. He is not embarrassed to admit he doesn’t know

what he doesn’t know. This is a powerful lesson for us and especially for our children.

You don’t always have to be right. You don’t always have to know everything. Bashfulness is a wonderful Midah –

but not when it comes to Torah learning. If you’re not sure – ask for help. Most of all, we see the power and central-

ity of Emes – truth.

Learning to be a person of honesty and integrity is critical to your child’s healthy development. Too often, children

are tempted, and succumb, to cheating on tests because of the undue pressure they feel to succeed. In striving for a

few more points on a test that will quickly be forgotten, your child may be trading away his or her good name, when

honesty should be the highest value. Children are starting at a younger and younger age to act in a manner that they

know is dishonest. Parents’ signatures are forged on incomplete homework assignments, extra credit checklists and

tests. All too often, we the parents are (unwittingly perhaps) demanding too much perfection, and possibly conveying

a message of conditional love – you’re loved and appreciated for your outstanding school performance – which trans-

lates to: if you don’t do as well as your parents expect, you’re not as worthy of love.

Let’s keep our eye on the real prize – to raise children who strive for truth over fleeting accomplishment and integrity

over outward appearances. Perhaps in this way we can help restore the natural curiosity and excitement to learn with

which children entered school, and which our great teacher Rashi demonstrated so openly and vividly throughout his

illustrious life.

Best wishes for a wonderful Shabbos,

Rabbi Kalman Baumann

Dear Parents,

Please join us at the Book Fair! The Scholastic Book Fair begins Tuesday, November 16 and runs through Monday, November 22 from 9:00am – 4:00pm in the Toras Emes Multi Purpose Room.

Come join us for cake and coffee when you volunteer at the Book Fair, please call Esta Rosenberg 786-390-2767 or fill out the attached form.

Here’s how the Book Fair works: During the week, each child will visit the Book Fair twice with his/her class, the first time to make a request list to bring home for parents and the second time to make purchases. You and your family are invited to come during our open hours and during your child’s class visit. We have books for all ages, and we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the various selections and reasonable prices. Not to mention the benefit to our school from the profits of your purchases.

Besides bringing affordable, appropriate books to our school, a goal of our Book Fair is to increase class-room libraries. One way is with the Classroom Wish List, which allows you to donate books to your child’s classroom in your family’s name. Be sure to look for the Classroom Wish List display when you arrive. Do-nating books to the classroom and school library is even easier with the new Gift Certificate program, see gift certificates attached.

Participating with our 1 for Books program helps the students in our school. All loose change and dollars donated through this program is used to buy books for needy students in our school. Simply fill out an at-tached slip and send it in with your loose change or dollars.

Sincerely,

Rachel F. Breier, Racheli Grossman, and Esta Rosenberg Book Fair Chairpersons

New Opportunity; Clean out your bookshelves and donate your gently used books. All donated book will be sold in our dollar section at 100% profit to the PTA.

P.S. For your convenience, our Book Fair accepts credit cards! Discover, Visa, MasterCard, American Ex-press, and secured debit cards (with Visa or MasterCard logos on them).
