High School Outreach Project

The high school outreach project consists of a series of videoconference sessions where Vanier students and teachers meet up online with students from high schools throughout Quebec! This semester we will be connecting with 4 different high schools (Joliette High School, Ste-Agathe Academy, Laurentian Regional High School and Grosse Ile in the Magdalen Islands). There is a different topic every week and Vanier student mentors get the opportunity to share their thoughts on a range of topics from academic skills to urban survival skills and the day in the life of a college student. We need Vanier students for these sessions to work. The atmosphere is fun and casual, and lunch is provided! The videoconferences take place at Vanier on Tuesdays starting February 1st at 11:30 for 4 weeks for Secondary 5 students and then April 11th, 18th and 25th for Secondary 3 and 4 students at 12:30-1:30. Students can come to as many or as few sessions as they want. Participation in 3 or more sessions gets them a letter of recognition that they can list on your CV. They can also use this

project to accumulate volunteer hours for the STAR program. We need student volunteers to make this project truly successful. If you would allow me to come into classes, I would be happy to make this announcement and explain the High School Outreach program personally. It would take no more than 5 minutes of class time! If unavailable for this, I would ask that you spread the word to your students that we are in need of volunteers. Thank you for your help.

News from the Vanier Research Ethics Board

Please keep in mind that any research that recruits members of the Vanier community (students, teachers or staff) as participants, must first be authorized by the Vanier Research Ethics Board. The Board is an independent entity that uses the TCPS2 (http://www.pre.ethics.gc.ca/eng/policy-politique/initiatives/tcps2-eptc2/Default/) to guide decision-making about research ethics. Any research relying on human participants conducted by members of the Vanier community must also be approved by the Research Ethics Board. Research carried out by students as part of course activities typically does not require a review by the board, but is covered by guidelines for teachers, and is under the ethical supervision of the course teacher. Starting now, any research recruiting at Vanier must declare, in recruitment materials or discussions, that they have received the authorization of the Vanier REB to collect data. If you are unsure about whether data collection has been reviewed and authorized by our Board, please contact Wendy Ault, or the Chair of the REB.

Religious Holy Days The Office of the Academic Dean would like to remind faculty members of the College's policy and procedures regarding religious holy days. The only holidays formally recognized by Vanier's Academic Calendar are those set by law or by the collective agreements. These holidays are Labour Day, Thanksgiving, the Christmas break, Good Friday, Easter Monday and Victoria Day. Other religious holy days, such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover (Jewish) and Id al-Fitr (Islamic) amongst others, are not recognized in the Academic Calendar. On such days, College proceedings and classes take place as usual. Students who are absent for religious reasons should not suffer a penalty related only to their absence. They are responsible for the material covered in the classes and labs that they miss, same as with other absences. Faculty, however, should avoid giving examinations on these days, or should provide a suitable alternative to the students who will be fulfilling their religious obligations. Faculty should realize that Jewish Holidays begin at sundown on the evening before the holiday. Late afternoon exams should be avoided on these days, if possible, in order to permit students to be at home by sundown. Faculty should inform students who wish to observe religious holy days during regularly scheduled class time that they must submit to their attention a completed Religious Holy Days Absence Form http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/registrars/request-forms/religious-holy-days within the first week of classes specifying particular date(s), time(s) and name(s) of the religious holy day(s) on which they will be absent. Alternative arrangements convenient to both students and faculty can then be made. Information on Student Absences for Religious Holy Days can be found in section 2.2.6 of the IPESA http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/bylaws-policies-procedures/files/2016/08/IPESA-Approved-by-Board-June-2016-2.pdf In order to provide the full class time for the students, faculty who are absent for religious holy days should make every effort to see that their classes meet as usual. There are two ways to provide substitute teachers for your classes:

1. Find a teacher qualified to teach in your discipline that would be willing to "swap" classes with you, at no cost to the College, and inform the Faculty Dean in writing prior to the absence. This notification must include the name of the religious holy day(s) and the date(s) of absence, the scheduled classes for these days and the name of the substitute teacher(s).

2. Notify the College as per the normal absence reporting procedures. Since you are officially absent, the College will apply the

Substitute Teachers Policy. Absences on religious holy days should be reported by clicking on Teachers on the College’s home page (http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca) then on Omnivox; log in on Omnivox and then click on Teachers Absences.

The Learning Commons

The Learning Commons was created as part of the official academic restructuring that came into effect as of August 1st. It brings together three important academic services: The Library, The Learning Centre (soon to be the Tutoring and Academic Success Centre), and the Math & Science Centre (soon to be the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Centre). These three departments will soon move into the newly renovated Learning Commons space and will play a key role in the college’s Student Success Plan. Renovation Update As most of you are aware and as inevitably expected when renovating an old building, the renovation of the Learning Commons has encountered a few delays throughout the fall semester. Though we will not be opening the space in time for the start of the winter semester, rest assured that we are working hard to ensure that the space is complete and ready to receive visitors as soon as possible. Currently, here is where we are at:

Most of the painting has been completed for all areas of the Learning Commons;

Lighting and ventilation has been installed in most areas of the Learning Commons, what remains is mostly in the F-500 area;

Corrective work on the F-300 floor has started and will take at least a week to fix;

Flooring work will begin this week for the D-300, E-300 and possibly the F-400 areas;

The F-500 area will look more complete within the next two weeks as the construction crews add the finishing touches to the ventilation system and construct any missing walls;

The custom built office furniture, circulation and reception desks, along with the cabinets for the hackerspace / robotics team room will be installed in the coming weeks;

Finally, the glass walls will likely be delivered next week and will be installed within the weeks to come. Study Spaces for Students Due to the delays, students will find study space to once again be limited for part of this semester. As a reminder, the list of study spaces open to all students is attached at the end of Intercom. In addition to being posted around the college, the list of spaces is also accessible to students via their Omnivox portal. Main study areas include: The Library (D-100 and D-140), The Learning Centre / Math & Science Centre (B-205 and B-222), and the I.T. Centre (N-215). Students can borrow laptops for use around campus from D-100 and B-205. Seeking Student Tutors for Winter 2017 The Tutoring & Academic Success Centre (TASC) is still looking to recruit new student tutors for the winter semester. Ideal tutors should have a solid grasp of math or science subjects, strong study habits, as well as superior communication skills. If you have encountered any students that you feel would make excellent tutors, could you please forward their names and ID numbers by Mio to the attention of Ashley Rankin.
