The approval would grant Fargo Public Schools the authority to maintain its current standard of effort at 127.00 mills. Providing this authority ensures that the District can connue to cover the costs of offering a comprehensive educaonal experience for all students. The March 7, 2017 elecon ballot queson is: The current Fargo Public School District’s general fund levy is 127.00 mills. The current statutory general fund limitaon is seventy mills on the dollar of the taxable valuaon of the school district. Shall Fargo Public Schools District No. 1 have a specified general fund mill levy of 127.00 mills effecve December 31, 2017? A “YES” vote will allow Fargo Public Schools to receive tax dollars based on the true assessed value of individual property. This will allow FPS to connue to provide quality educaonal opportunies for all students in the district. A “NO” vote will freeze Fargo Public Schools at the actual property tax dollars collected in the 2015-16 fiscal year, which means the district would no longer receive addional general fund tax dollars based on the true assessed value of individual property as the city grows or property values change. What have you done since graduating from Fargo South in 2011?IhavebeenattendingcollegeatNorthDakotaStateUniversityandIwillbegraduatingthisspringsemester.Whileattendingcollege,IhavebeencoachingvolleyballatFargoDaviesHighSchoolforfiveyears.ThispastNovember,IwasnamedMissNorthDakotaUSA2017.IwilladvancetocompeteattheMissUSA pageant live on FOX Television this year!

How do you feel your education through Fargo Public Schools helped in your current journey? IamwhoIamtodaybecauseofFargoPublicSchools.Whilegrowing up, English was hard. I lived in a household where therewasmorethanonelanguagespoken.MovingfromthesmalltownofEnderlin,N.D.toFargowasscaryatfirstbecausethesizeoftheschoolsinFargoarebiggerthanEnderlinandIwasscaredthatIwouldn’thavethesameguidanceand

support.Ididovercomethatfeardowntheroadbecauseoftheteachers.Theywerefriendly,welcoming,andhelpful.FargoPublicSchoolshelpedmetremendously.Theschoolsystemhelped me gain self-esteem and it taught me not to give up on myself, especially when it gets tough.ThatiswhyIwanttobeateacher,becauseIwanttomakeanimpactinachild’slife.

What is your best memory from your time at Fargo South? IwillneverforgetmysenioryearatFargoSouthHighSchool.Duringbasketballseasonmysenioryear,ItoremyACLandmeniscus.ItwasdevastatingbecauseIwaspartofthebasketballprogramatFargoSouthHighSchoolforfouryears.Itwashardnotplayingmysenioryear,butIdidn’tletmyemotionsaffectmyteammates.Iattendedeverypracticeand game with a smile on my face and supported them throughout the season as a friend, a leader, a mentor, and a teammate.

Who inspired you the most and why?ThereasonwhyIwillneverforgetthisyearisbecauseofmycoaches,CoachCraigFlaaganandCoachJason“Smeds”Smedshammer.AtStatebasketball,bothofmywonderfulcoachestookthetimetosetupatimeformetobeonthecourtonelasttimewithmyteammates,whoIhadbeenplayingwithsince6thgrade.Ididn’tknowaboutthisuntiltheytoldusduringourwarm-ups.Itearedupinstantly.WhenIwasonthatcourtonelasttime,Imademylastshotofmybasketballcareer.IheardthecrowdcheeringloudlyandIsawmyteammatesrunningtowards me to hug me. While all that was happening, in my head I was telling myself that I havethebestcoachesever.Thosetwomadeahugeimpactonmylife.Theyshowedmethatthere’smorethanjustlearningandexecutingaskillinasport.TheyarethereasonwhyIamcoaching today.

What have you done since graduating from Fargo South in 1972?AftergraduatingfromFargoSouthin1972,IearnedadoublemajorinEnglishandElementary Ed and a minor in French. I taught school in Denver for three years, and thenwenttoworkforPitneyBowesinsalesandmanagement.In1986ImovedbacktoFargowithmychildrenandwenttoworkforDawsonHailInsuranceCompanywithmyfather,Jim.MycousinTomDawsonworkedwithhisfather,Bob,intheagencysideofthebusiness.Wesoldthecropinsurancecompanyinthelatenineties,andIearnedanMFAinCreativeWritingatMSUM.Iwroteanovelandamemoir,butasIwasbeginningtomarketthem,ImetaLostBoyofSudaninFargo-JosephAkolMakeer.Hehadadesiretohelporphansinthevillageheescapedasaten-year-oldboy.Alongwithmyowntwosons,andtwostepsons,Ihavethreeadopteddaughters-fromSouthKoreaandRussia.Ididn’talwaysseeeyetoeyewithmyparents,butIcouldn’timaginenothavingany,andIasachildIwasdrawntostoriesaboutorphaned children.

ItraveledwithJosephandtwootherstoKakumaRefugeeCampinnorthernKenyaandtohisremotevillageofDukPayuelinJongleiState,southernSudantomakeadocumentaryabouthisdesiretohelporphansinhisvillage.Uponourreturnweincorporatedandreceivedour501(c)3status.Webeganourprogram-AfricanSoul,AmericanHeart(ASAH)-withfiveboysfromKakumainKenya-westillhavetwointheprogram,includingonegirl.Fiveothershavegraduatedfromhighschool.TwoaresupportedincollegebyJoseph.WebuiltaboardingschoolinthevillageofDukPayuelwhichopenedin2012.Inearly2014,weweredisplacedbythecurrent civil war. We located our students in 11 refugee camps in three countries - Kenya, South Sudan, and Uganda. We moved themacrossthesouthernborderofSouthSudaninFebruary2014toMoyo,Uganda,closetotheborderofSouthSudan.Wehave49studentsinourprogram-primarilygirlsalongwithfourboys.Aboutnineotherstudentshavecompletedourprogramandmovedon.

InSeptemberof2016,KevinWallevand,nationalaward-winningreporterforWDAY,traveledwithmeandthreelocalsponsorstoUgandaandmadeadocumentary,“OrphansoftheNile,”thatairedonWDAYinNovember.ASAHsponsoredascreeningwithalltheparticipantsattheFargoTheatre.Thedocis22minutesandcanbeviewedonourwebsitehttp://www.africansoulamericanheart.org/.

Tell us about your family?Mydad’sparentssidecametoFargointheearly1900’s.Mygrandfather,CharlesDawson,wasMayorinthe40’s.Onmymother’sside,herrelativessettledintheBismarckarea(laterWashburn)inthe1870’s.Allmyrelativesmadecontributionstothecommunitiesinwhichtheylived,andtheirexampleshadanaffectonmeandmyowndesiretogiveback.

What is your best memory from your time at Fargo South? IwasactiveintheatreandcompetitivespeechwhileatSouthandwasfortunatetoactinstageproductionsandwintrophiestravelingtospeechtournaments.Itwasveryexcitingandfun,Ihadmanyfriendswithsimilarinterests,andtheexperienceoftalkingtoagroupofpeoplebothinasmallroomorinanauditoriumhashelpedmewiththeworkIdotoday.

Who inspired you the most at Fargo South and why?JimEbsen,speechandtheatrecoach.Hewasanamazingteacherandtookkidsunderhiswing.Hedemandedexcellence,andhemademeandothersfeelliketheycouldreachhisexpectationsifweworkedatit.Heexpectedustobeprepared,taughtusprofessionalbehaviorandpoise,andthathashelpedmethroughoutmylife.

Ifeelfortunatetohavegrownupatatimeinhistorywhereyoungwomenwerebreakingfreeoftraditionalrolesandenteringaworkforcewhichwelcomedthem.ThoughIlivedeightyearsinDenver,IreturnedtoFargo,andhaveneverregrettedit.It’sawonderfulplacetoraiseafamily,andIfeelfortunatetoliveinthefirstcondoprojectindowntownFargo.Ourcityleadersarecognizantoftheblessingsandthecursesofgrowthanddevelopment,andtherearemanypeopletryingtoproactivelyaddresstheissuesthatcomewithgrowth.IalsositontheDowntownNeighborhoodBoard,andIwouldinviteanyoneinterestedthefutureofourdowntowntoparticipateinsomeoftheforumsavailableforinput.

At Fargo North James participatedinfootballandtrack&field.HeheldaStateOfficeinDECA,hadabrieftimeperiodasthebasketballmanager,wasamemberofJCL,letteredinacademics, was on the academic challenge team,participatedintheatre,andwastheHomecoming King and Mr. Spartan.

James went to college at the University ofMinnesota,TwinCities,wherehestudiedMarketingandManagement.SincegraduatinghehasjoinedtheSimonPropertyGroup and has lived in Chicago as the Assistant GM of Gurnee Mills, as the interim GMofLibertyVillagePremiumOutletsinNewJersey,andastheGMofGaffneyPremium Outlets in South Carolina. James is now the Property Manager of Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets, the second highest grossing Premium Outlet for the company. He met his wife, Ana, while living in the Carolinas.

DavidGodfreyhasbeennominatedforanappointment to the U.S. Airforce Academy. Nominationsarebasedona“wholeperson”evaluationandincludeacademicachievements,extracurricularactivities,leadershipskills,physicalaptitude,andcharacter references. Being accepted for admission to a U.S. military academy is an exceptionalhonorreservedforournation’smost promising students. Godfrey received hisnominationfromSenatorHoeven;hemustnowcompleteadditionalrequirementsand await a decision on his appointment, whichwillbesometimeinMarch2017.

Madeline Strandemo, a Fargo South High School graduate, was the topfinisherforthe University of Minnesotawomen’scross country team that placed fourth in the Big Ten Conference Championships hosted bytheGophers.Strandemo,ajunior,ledtheGopher’swithaneighth-placefinishwithatimeof21minutes,10.2seconds.Strandemo’sfinishisthehighestbyaGophersinceLauraDochertyplacedthirdin2013.

“Overall, I thought it was a good day for our team,” said Strandemo, who earned All-Big TenSecondteamhonorswithherfinish.“I’mhappy,Iimprovedfrom20th-placefinishlastyear.Mygoalwastopseventhisyear,buteighth is good too.”

BethPodollwantsabetterstartthansheexperiencedaprevioustimeshecompetedattheUSACurlingJuniorNationalChampionships.“ThefirstslideofnationalsIcompletelywipedoutsohopefullythatdoesn’thappenthistime,”Podollsaidwithalaugh.

Podoll,fromFargo,istheskipforoneofthewomen’steamsattheJuniorNationals,whichtookplaceF-MCurlingClub.Themen’sandwomen’sfinalswereonSaturdayJan.21.“I’mlookingforwardtothewholeweek,”saidthe20yearoldPodoll,aFargoNorthHighSchoolgraduate.“Itshouldbegood.”

JuniorNationalsareforteams21andunderandthisfieldfeatureseightteamsonboththemen’sandwomen’sside.Eachdivisionplaysaroundrobinwiththetopthreeadvancingtoaplayoff.Bothmen’sandwomen’swinnersadvancetotheWorldJuniorChampionshipsthatareslatedforFeb.16-26inSouthKorea. “It was really cool when we found out this was inFargo,”saidPodoll,whohasbeencurlingforaslongasshecanremember.

ThenewF-MCurlingClubinsouthFargoisa$2.7millionfacilitythatwascompletedin2013.Podollsaidshe“grewupwiththecurlingclub”andstartedplaying with her whole family when the F-M Curling ClubwaslocatedinnorthFargo.“AssoonasIwasborn,theyhadmeoutthere,”Podollsaid.

EmilyMartin,SaigeThurlowandMirandaScheelareonPodoll’steamforJuniorNationals.FrankPodoll,Beth’sfather,istheteams’coach.Bethsaidshehascoached each of her teammates at some point of their curling careers. “I recruited them I guess,” Beth saidwithasmile.“It’sfun.We’vegottentobesuchclosefriends...it’sexcitingtoknowthatyouhavealittlebittodowiththat,butyoujustfeelreallyproudof them. “

SouthKoreaishosingthe2018WinterOlympicssotheJuniorNationalswinnerswillgetachancetoplayatthesamecurlingvenuethatwillbeusedfortheupcomingwintergames,F-MCurlingClubmanagerEvanWorkinsaid.BethPodollisrelishingthechancetocompeteinherthirdnationalcurlingevent.She’spreviouslycompetedinajuniornationalsandamixednationals.“It’sreallytheadrenalinerushthatyougetwhenyou’recurlingatcompetitiveevents.Yougettobeoutthere,”Podollsaid.“Ilikethecommunityaspect.Everybodyincurlingknowseverybodyouthere.”

Fargo North Open Door Program was created to provide students with basicnecessitiessuchasfood,toiletryitems,shoes,clothingandahelpinghand.Thisprogramwasstartedbecausetherearestudentswhoarehomeless,studentswhosefamiliescan’tmakeendsmeet,andsomestudentsjustneedingahelpinghandtogetthroughatoughweekormonth.

The goal of the Open Door Program is student success. If a young person comestoschoolhungry,doesn’tknowifthey’llhaveajacketintimeforwinter,orsimplyneedsatoothbrush,itdistractsfromtheirabilitytolearn.OpenDooristheretohelpstudentssucceedintheireducationalgoals.
