To, Principal Secretary Forest Chhattisgarh Reg: Requesting to release elephant from Chirchari, Rajnandgaon into the wild. Sir, As you know few months ago a sub adult tusker separated from its herd and travelled across 6 forest divisions (Korba, Katghora, Bilaspur, Kabeerdham , Khairagarh and Rajnandgaon) covering a distance of more than 300 km through continuous forest patches without causing harm to any human being or agriculture but unfortunately when it had reached Rajnandgaon district, it killed an old woman on 12 th  July 2013. Following the incident the elephant has been captured and has been kept in captivity in Chirchari Forest depot in Rajnandgaon District since 13 th  July 2013 You are already aware that in regions where there are no elephants are present any such incident would create more panic among people than regions where there is regular human-elephant conflict. We believe that this case in Rajnandgaon district is also similar in nature. i.e. capturing an elephant which does not have any history of conflict when there is no effort taken in solving wide spread human-elephant conflict across Chhattisgarh which is resulting in massive damages to  people, pr operty and the anim al itself, is not a good strateg y and lea ds to wasting public resource. We would like to bring your kind attention towards the recent protests in Dharamjaigarh, where people have been demanding a safe passage for elephants to safe guard their livelihood and lives. We have documented the condition of the elephant in July, August and September. We observed that elephant is being kept under bad living conditions and the capacity of the staff who are involved in training of the animal is also questionable. The elephant also under severe stress when we visited and is loosing weight drastically (see pics attached). We kindly urge you to relocate the elephant to its original place and invest our money and efforts where it matters. We are also attaching details on some cases where the elephants have been successfully relocated from other states for your kind attention. Reg: Requesting to release elephant from Chirchari, Rajnandgaon into the wild.

Sir,

As you know few months ago a sub adult tusker separated from its herd and travelled across 6 forest divisions (Korba,Katghora, Bilaspur, Kabeerdham , Khairagarh and Rajnandgaon) covering a distance of more than 300 km through

continuous forest patches without causing harm to any human being or agriculture but unfortunately when it had reachedRajnandgaon district, it killed an old woman on 12th July 2013. Following the incident the elephant has been captured and

has been kept in captivity in Chirchari Forest depot in Rajnandgaon District since 13 th July 2013

You are already aware that in regions where there are no elephants are present any such incident would create more panic

among people than regions where there is regular human-elephant conflict. We believe that this case in Rajnandgaondistrict is also similar in nature. i.e. capturing an elephant which does not have any history of conflict when there is no

effort taken in solving wide spread human-elephant conflict across Chhattisgarh which is resulting in massive damages to people, property and the animal itself, is not a good strategy and leads to wasting public resource.

We would like to bring your kind attention towards the recent protests in Dharamjaigarh, where people have beendemanding a safe passage for elephants to safe guard their livelihood and lives.

We have documented the condition of the elephant in July, August and September. Krishnagiri: Perhaps all’s well that ends well for a lone tusker that got separated from its family during an elephantchase in neighbouring Karnataka more than 18 days ago.

It had strayed into the compound of a private company, 7 km from Krishnagiri, on the Chennai-Bengaluru national

highway, and was on Saturday released in the Jawalagiri reserve forest, the forest officials aiming to thus reunite it with

its kin.

It first stayed in the Ramachandara RF in Mallur taluk and later entered Hosur, still on its hunt for its family. The forest

officials captured it after many unsuccessful attempts.

“The tusker was trapped after being tranquilised by experts, an operation that began during the early hours and

continued for more than five hours,” said A.K.Ulaganathan, Krishnagiri district forest officer.

According to Ulaganathan, “The tusker was tranquilised, using a mixture of two drugs, including ketamine. N. S.

Manoharan, a vet, shot the dart with a tranquiliser gun from a distance of 15 m from the place where the elephant was

found inside a private company’s premises.”

The task to tranquilise the jumbo began on Friday; two darts were shot before the animal was trapped, using the

services of kumki elephants. But the animal was let free after it locked horns with the trained elephants on Friday night.

The forest officials, realising the danger that was looming large, removed the kumkis from the place to save the wild

elephant from being killed by the trained ones.

They recaptured the tusker on Saturday, this requiring another round of tranquiliser shots. The task to recapture it

began early on Saturday.

Vets used three darts, shooting these at varying intervals. The animal came under their control after the third dart.

Trained elephant catchers then tied a rope around its neck to keep the animal in check. It was then forced to enter a

lorry through use of a crane and earthmovers.

The captured jumbo was then released in the forest.
