Healthcare DLN Overview

Healthcare Distance

Learning Network (DLN)Offered by

The Evangelical Lutheran

Good Samaritan Societyand

Savant Technology Group

2

Background

Healthcare DLN is a collaboration between The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society (GSS) and Savant Technology Group

GSS delivers interactive education and training programs, via the satellite-based Healthcare Distance Learning Network

Savant provides customer support and the Communication And Distance Education (CADE) components

3

Healthcare DLN Objective

One of GSS’s key objectives - to provide education and training to their widely dispersed workforce via the Healthcare DLN, resulting in: Higher quality of care for residents Higher levels of satisfaction among staff

and residents Increased retention of competent staff

4

Healthcare DLN Objective

The Healthcare DLN is available on a subscription basis to other organizations for a monthly fee

A key objective of the GSS / Savant collaboration is to assist other long-term care providers in addressing their challenges in a cost-effective manner

5

Challenges Addressed

Long term care industry changes quickly and is highly regulated Need for timely, consistent, high quality

education and training Limited number of qualified instructors High turnover rates require constant

training of new staff

6

Challenges Addressed

Cost considerations High cost to develop and deliver

education and training Travel time and costs for employees and

instructors Scheduling time off work for training Recruiting and retention costs

7

Interactive Distance Learning is best used when...

Audience is geographically dispersedAudience is largeTime to reach entire audience is

shortTraining is delivered regularlyMessage is critical or needs

consistent deliverySubject matter experts are limited

8

Interaction is Key

Interactive nature of the DLN facilitates learning: Interactivity requires attention and

response Presenter controls the "pace" of the

delivery and can call on participants at any time

Participants can request clarification or further discussion on a given topic

Shared experience and knowledge significantly enhances the presentation

12

Live vs. Rerun -- The Reality in Long-Term Care

Ideal is - live and interactive all the time

Reality is - centers are short-staffed schedules are tight and shifts are varied resident care comes first

Interactivity does not have to happen for effectiveness - it just needs to be available
