Model-independent analysis

A given model can be tested by making all possiblepredictions within the model and making a comparison withexperimentThis would have to be done for a number of models givingthe same final stateAnother phenomenological approach is to parametrizeexperimental results in a model independent form usingonly kinematicsThese parameters may be determined from experimentand compared with predictions of models.

Some general conclusions

Some conclusions which are model and process independentWithout polarization, the only correlations which surviveare in the case of V ,A interactions.S,P, T interactions need transverse polarizationIn case of V ,A, with transverse polarization, both beamshave to be polarizedIn case of V ,A BSM interactions only at tree level,structure functions contributing with polarization andwithout polarization are the same.Hence no qualitatively new information is contained in thepolarized distributions.Polarization can give information on absorptive parts ofstructure functions of BSM interactions, which cannot beobtained with only unpolarized beams

Some more general conclusions

Absorptive part of one structure function Im W2 contributesonly for transversely polarized beamsThis term vanishes unless two different vector particles areexchangedFor example, for a neutral final state (no photoncontribution), this term contributes only if there is anadditional Z ′ exchange, with coupling different from thoseof ZFor the case of a HH final state there are no CP-oddcorrelations for V ,A interactions.This statement is true regardless of whether there ispolarization or not.Thus, CP violation needs final-state polarization to beseen, or S,P, T interactions

Top spin correlation vs. single top polarization

When t and t̄ are produced, a useful observable is top spincorrelation:

dσd cos θad cos θb

=14

(1 + C cos θa cos θb)

This has been very well studied theoreticallyAlso seems experimentally feasibleNeeds reconstruction of both t and t̄ rest framesIt is conceivable that single top polarization can give betterstatisticsAt Tevatron or LHC, single top polarization implies newphysics

Measuring polarization

Top polarization can be measured by studying the decaydistribution of a decay fermion f in the rest frame of the top:

d cos θf=

12

(1 + Ptκf cos θf ) ,

whereθf is the angle between the f momentum and the topmomentum,Pt is the degree of top polarization,κf is the “analyzing power” of the final-state particle f .

Analyzing power for various channels

The analyzing power kf for various channels is given by:

κb = −m2

t − 2m2W

m2t + 2m2

W' −0.4

κW = −κb ' 0.4

κ`+ = κd = 1

The charged lepton or d quark has the best analysing powerd-quark jet cannot be distinguished from the u-quark jet.In the top rest frame the down quark is on average lessenergetic than the up quark.Thus the less energetic of the two light quark jets can beused.Net spin analyzing power is κj ' 0.5

Corrections to the analyzing power

Leading QCD corrections to κb and κj are of order a fewper cent.QCD corrections decrease |κ|[Brandenburg,Si,Uwer 2002]

κ also affected by corrections to the form of the tbWcoupling (“anomalous couplings")It is useful to have a way of measuring polarizationindependent of such correctionsAlso useful is distribution in lab. frame, rather than in toprest frameThe formula shown above does not take into account spincorrelations – that needs a spin density matrix formalism

A “theorem”

The angular distribution of charged leptons (down quarks)from top decay is not affected by anomalous tbWcouplings (to linear order)Checked earlier for e−e+ → t t̄ [Grzadkowski & Hioki, Rindani(2000)] and for γγ → t t̄ [Grzadkowski & Hioki; Godbole, Rindani,Singh]

This is shown for any general process A + B → t + X inthe c.m. frame [Godbole, Rindani, Singh (2006)]

Assumes narrow-width approximation for the topThis implies that charged-lepton angular distributions aremore accurate probes of top polarization, rather thanenergy distributions or b or W angular distributions

Collimated top quarks

Systems with large invariant mass of t t̄ can produce highlyboosted tops – with collimated decay products

Collimated leptonic top quarks allow the energy of thelepton and the b-jet to be separately measured, but not theangular distributionsThe momentum fraction of the visible energy carried by thelepton provides a natural polarimeter.
