Oracle losing out cloud market San Francisco, June 15

Cloud major Oracle is in for some tough times

ahead as Microsoft and Google are fast eating

into its core tech and Cloud businesses,

JPMorgan analysts have said. According to a

report on Fox Business on Thursday, JPMorgan

analyst Mark Murphy has downgraded Oracle

to neutral from overweight based on the CIO

survey results. Many of Oracle’s clients are

migrating to lower-cost cloud computing

services offered by rivals such as Alphabet

(Google’s parent company) and Amazon. “Only

6.5 per cent of vendors voted for Oracle as

being indispensable to their operations. At the

same time, Amazon’s importance to CIOs

showed material improvement,” said the

report, citing the CIO survey findings. Oracle

will release its fourth quarter fiscal 2018 results

would cover passengers in an accident which

will cover bodily injury and property damage for

Twenty  eight  former  and  cur­rent CISCO employees started acrowdfunding  campaign  totrain  22  rural  entrepreneurs,who will, in turn, make a di�er­ence to their localities. 

They needed �28 lakh for thisproject, which they expected toraise  over  30  days.  As  the  cam­paign reaches the last lap, it hasalready raised �37.89 lakh or 134per  cent  of  the  targetedamount. 

Instead  of  lining  up  at  theirbank or NBFC, social entrepren­eurs are now turning to crowd­funding  platforms  to  raise

money.  The  success  of  the  Gra­monnati  crowdfunding  cam­paign  that  is  being  run  on  Fue­ladream  crowdfundingplatform  shows  how  this  is  aneasier  way  to  connect  thosewho  want  to  contribute  to­wards  change  in  society  withentrepreneurs  with  concreteideas  to  bring  about  thatchange.

Gramonnati,  founded  bythree  ex­CISCO  employees,  VedPrakash  Sharma,  Shyam  Kaluveand  Suresh  Subbarao,  is  basedin Pondicherry and aims to cre­ate  a  new  generation  of  ruralentrepreneurs in Jabalpur Mad­hya Pradesh and the Asthua vil­

lage  in  the  Darbhanga  districtof  Bihar.  The  idea  is  to  trainyouth, women and ex­army per­sonnel  from  the  local  com­munity  and  enable  them  to  set

up  Gramonnati  Kendras  intheir respective villages.

These  ‘kendras’  will  not  onlytrain  the  residents  in  �nancialand  computer  literacy  but  also

enable  the  existing  enterprisesand farmers in the area to bene­�t  from  technology.  The  �rstbatch of Udyam Program has 24trainees,  9  boys  and  15  girls  inthe age group of 19­22 years. Theskills  that  they  are  beingprovided  will  help  them  set  upand  operate  these  kendras.Around  �1  lakh  has  to  be  inves­ted per trainee over a period of12 months, to cover the stipendand  training  cost  till  they  startoperating  their  own  micro­en­terprises in villages.

“The  phenomenal  success  ofthis  campaign  means  they  cantrain  more  youth.  The  cam­paign  has  a  very  interestingformat as it  involves 28 friends,colleagues  and  believers  whohave  come  together  to  docrowdfunding,” says Ranganath

While Tata Consultancy Servicesreceived  a  respite  from  tradesecret lawsuit �led against it inthe  US  last  year  trimming  itspayout  by  more  than  half,  thecompany  still  expects  �nes  togo up, as per its annual report.

“In  September  2017,  the  com­pany  received  a  court  order  re­ducing  the  damages  from�6,114  crore  ($940  million)  to�2,732  crore ($420  million)  toEpic. The company has receivedlegal  advice  to  the  e�ect  thatthe order and the reduced dam­ages  awarded  are  not  suppor­ted  by  evidence  presented  dur­ing the trial and a strong appealcan  be  made  to  superior  courtto fully set aside the order,” TCSsaid in its annual report. 

In 2016, a US grand jury orderslapped  two  Tata  group  com­panies  —  Tata  Consultancy  Ser­vices  and  Tata  America  Interna­

tional  Corp  —  with  a$940­million  �ne  in  a  tradesecret  lawsuit  �led  againstthem  by  Epic.  The  companieswere accused of “brazenly steal­ing  trade  secrets,  con�dentialinformation,  documents  anddata”  belonging  to  Epic.  The�ne  was  later  reduced  to  $420million  in  September  last  year.TCS, however, continues to con­test charges.

TCS said a Letter of Credit hasbeen made available to Epic for�2,862  crore  ($440  million)  as�nancial  security  in  order  tostay  execution  of  the  judge­ment  pending  post­judgementproceedings  and  appeal.  “Ac­cordingly,  an  amount  of  �2,862crore  ($440  million)  is  dis­closed as contingent liability asincluded  in  the  claims  not  ac­knowledged  as  debts  by  theCompany.”

The question about the provi­sion  was  raised  during  TCS’  an­

nual general meeting, where atleast two shareholders broughtit, asking not only why the pro­vision is made but also whetherthe company has invested as towho was responsible for this in­formation stealing.

“Can  you  explain  why  thecompany  is  issuing  a  letter  ofcredit  of  $440  million  to  EPICeven  though  the  �ne  was  re­duced  to  $420  million?”  askedTCS  shareholder  Tamal  Majum­dar. 

“Who  is  responsible  for  this?What  action  has  TCS  takenagainst  this  person,”  asked  an­other  investor  questioning  themanagement  over  the  EPICcase. 

TCS  Chairman  NChandrasekaran  did  not  re­spond  on  the  query  about  theaction taken against the peopleresponsible  but  pointed  outthat since the case is still in thecourt, “we have to wait”.

Jet  Airways  is  trying  to  changethe  concept  of  air  travel  in  thedomestic market.

From July 15, the airline is re­vising its baggage concept fromweight  to  piece  for  domestic�ights.  In  a  communication,the  airline  said  that  the  newbaggage  concept  will  apply  todomestic bookings from Fridayalthough  its  implementationwill begin from July 15.

For travel after July 15, the air­line will allow one free check­inbaggage  weighing  not  morethan 15 kg for economy class �y­ers  and  two  bags  not  weighingmore  than  30  kg  for  businessclass �yers.

Currently, a passenger travel­ling  in  economy  class  by  a  do­mestic �ight of Jet Airways is al­lowed  15  kg  free  baggageallowance.  But  there  are  no  re­strictions  on  the  number  ofbags which can be checked in. 

The  latest  move  is  keepingwith  what  Jet  Airways  followson  some  of  its  international�ights and is expected to resultin the airline being able to turn

around its aircraft and start thereturn journey faster. 

In line with global practiceThe  concept  of  a  free  baggageallowance based on the numberof bags being checked in ratherthan  weight  is  popular  in  theUnited  States  and  Canadawhere each economy class trav­eller is allowed to check in onlyone piece of baggage.

Calling it a good move, ManojChacko,  President,  SOTC,  Busi­ness  Travel,  felt  that  this  willmake things easier from an air­line’s  operational  perspective.“Travellers  will  adjust.  From  anairline’s  perspective,  it  makesthings easier and simpler other­wise there are always problemsabout  (passengers)  arguing

about the weight of the bag, etc.From  an  operational  perspect­ive  it  is  a  brilliant  move,”  hesaid. 

Chacko is of the opinion thatthis will help push up ancillaryrevenues for the airline withoutcreating confusion in the mindof customers.

John  Nair,  Head­BusinessTravel, Cox & Kings, pointed outthat  the  move  is  in  line  withglobal  practices  and  it  will  be­ne�t  the  airline.  “Initially,  do­mestic  travellers  will  be  incon­venienced  and  will  end  uppaying  for  excess  baggage.However,  it  is  up  to  the  airlineto  educate  customers  on  thisnew  baggage  concept  andsmoothen  the  entire  exercise,”Nair said.
