As was announced at parishes on June 17, 2018, the new Mutually Shared Vision for the Diocese of St. Petersburg is Courageously Living the Gospel an invitation for each of us to be bolder in how we live our faith.

Our new Vision defines our Sacred Purpose (also known as a Mission Statement), three priorities and nine goals that each of us can make our own in a unique way.

To assist with the implementation of this Vision, Bishop Gregory Parkes has announced that the Diocese of St. Petersburg is partnering with Catholic Leadership Institute

(CLI) to provide guidance and training. CLI is a national, non-profit organization that has in-depth knowledge in best practices and spiritual development.

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the "Bread of Life" discourse from John's Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews' ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life--a marvelous promise, but this "reward" is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: What are we celebrating on the feast of the

Assumption of Mary?

Answer: The Assumption, along with the Immaculate Conception, are two Marian dogmas that have been infallibly defined by the Church. The Assumption proclaims the reality that Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven. This was God's special gift to her in response to her total giving of self to God's plan and will.

The Church believes that Mary was immaculately conceived, that is, conceived without original sin. This led the Church to believe that she did not suffer one of the key consequences of original sin, death, and corruption. The Orthodox Church cel-ebrates the Dormition of Mary, the belief that Mary did not die but rather fell asleep and was thus assumed into heaven.

What significance does this feast have for our lives as Chris-tians today? This feast is above all an assurance and hope of our continued life with God. Modeling ourselves on Jesus and living the Christian life molded by Jesus' values is certainly the sure path to God. As a result, God will not leave us or-phaned or alone to suffer the emptiness of death. Rather, we believe that death is merely a transformation of our present state into an even more glorious and eternal relationship with God.

This is the hope and assurance that Mary's assumption cele-brates. It is a celebration of our assumption as well. She is one of us, providing a model of what God has in store for all who love and give of themselves to God.

Music Ministry Our music ministry is on its “Summer Hiatus”. I am very grateful to all those who participate in our music ministry. They help our liturgies come alive with a “joyful noise”. Although we will not have rehearsals for our 9:30 and 11:30 choirs over the summer, you can feel free to contact me to find out about getting involved with the choir when we resume in the Fall. Additionally, our Children’s Choir (ages 5-11) and Junior Choir (11 and up), will resume starting in September. If you are interested in getting involved you can e-mail me at [email protected]. Our Resurrection Choir sings for funerals and is open to new members. We meet a half-hour before each funeral. No pre-vious experience necessary. If you are interested in this, you can call the parish office and leave me a message, or e-mail me at [email protected]. I came across this prayer for the Summer time which I’d like to share: Father, Creator of all, thank You for summer! Thank you for the warmth of the sun and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the in-creased time I have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer season. Draw me closer to You this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence and light my path with Your Word and Counsel. As I enjoy Your creation, create in me a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You. Amen.

Great Indian chief of the Apalachee mission at Ivitachuco, Don Patricio was a truly remarkable man in our nation’s history. In his lifetime, he was known for his holiness, integrity and charity. Loved and respected by Indian and Spanish alike, he was called “Cacique of the Poor” (Chief of the Poor). A group of Creek assailants arrived in St. Augustine before sunrise on April 28, 1706 to attack the surrounding missions “they can cause some damage that will satisfy their allies the English, who are enemies of the faith.” Two elderly Indian chiefs confronted them and were seized: Don Patricio and his good friend and senior chief of Mission San Luis, Don Andres “a good Catholic of daily prayer.” The Creek Indian chief placed a cross before them “and told them to spit on it and then break it into pieces, and to throw the pieces to the fire to make a big bonfire with it, and that if they didn’t do that of their own accord, then they them-selves would be spat on, and their arms and legs torn apart, and then burned in a big bon-fire that they were going to light in order to throw them in it and cause their death. But the aforesaid senior chiefs, or Enijas, whose names were Don Patricio and Don Andrés, didn’t give the least sign of fear for the said Creek, because they are men of integrity and confidence for their example and worthy condition, … because the only fear they had was the fear of God our Lord, they struck them with their clubs until they broke all their bones, so that they could no longer remain standing, and said: “ Since you didn’t want to leave the Cross or spit on it, we will now strike you to death and spit on you to mock [your reli-gion] and to fill you with shame, and we do this in front of this Cross, and just as we told you to spit on it and burn it, at this time both of you are spat on and stricken with clubs, and you will now undergo a painful death.

In order to “kill them twice” the Creek dragged the two Apalachee Indian chiefs to the river and thrust their heads in the water to drown them and then they threw them upon the bonfire. They both suffered, but they died without denying their faith.

The Catholic Church encourages the “practice of merciful love,” offering as a guide the corporal works of mercy, charitable acts for the common good and basic human welfare. These actions are rooted in our love for the Lord,

and as Jesus tells us, knowing that whatever we do for the most vulnerable among us we do for Him. Pantry Hours: Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 9 am -11:30 am. For assistance Contact (813)949-6094
