What Is Your Status, and Is It Right?Bally’s Gold (Indigo Tower, 1st Floor)u Resourceful Fairs Track

Determining proper IRS reporting status can be more complicatedthan it appears at first. Those wanting to organize a not-for-profitare often confronted with determining what type of organization theywant to be. There are a number of choices available dependingon the organization’s purpose. In addition, with the IRS’s interestin mission drift, existing organizations need to have a clear understanding of their respective exempt status in order to protectthe organization’s exemption. This program will help new organizations (such as your fair foundation) determine the best structure and preserve the structure of existing organizations.

2. How To Manage Volunteer ConflictBally’s Silver (Indigo Tower, 1st Floor)u Leadership/Professional Development Track Are you looking for a way to reduce the amount of time spent dealing with conflict with volunteers at your fair? The Washington State University Extension Volunteer Conflict Model is here to help you accomplish that outcome. A multi-disciplinary group of WSU Extension professionals came together in 2013 to develop a model based on youth development principles that would provide both guidance and learning to volunteers. The step-by-step design of the model: 1) guides the professional through identification of specific behaviors contributing to conflict; 2) references a developmental research base to guide conversations with volunteers; and 3) presents a consistent, predictable course of action to address inappropriate behaviors and suggest necessary behavioral change. Extension professionals in Washington State now enjoy access to a user-friendly, web-based model providing real-time access to decision trees, form letters, and process navigation. This session will introduce you to the conflict model and give you the opportunity to utilize the system and learn more about the process.Presented by Eric Larsen, Natalie Kinion, Dan Teuteberg, Missy Cummins, Brian Brandt, and Jana Ferris, all of Washington State University Extension, Spokane

Known as “The Corporate Comedian,” Mayfield has merged together his corporate background as a lobbyist and his comedy background as a nightclub performer to create an extremely unique and comedic presentation style. Raised on a farm in Caney, Kans., Mayfield received two degrees from Kansas State University and served as national president of the Future Farmers of America. He has spent time as a high school teacher, a corporate lobbyist, was partner of an innovative golf instruction facility, was a professional model and spokesperson in print and television commercials, and owned a top rated nightclub. Mayfield is author of Mom’s Rules, a comedic yet poignant look at those things Moms say to kids. He earned the “Certified Speaking Professional” designation from the National Speakers Association and has been inducted into the Speaker Hall of Fame.Sponsored by Haas & Wilkerson Insurance

4. Legal Issues for Champions of Animal WelfareBally’s Silver (Indigo Tower, 1st Floor)u Build Your Own Track This session will help planners and managers for animal programs at fairs and exhibitions to prepare for the legal challenges of animal rights groups. Reviewing the law and discussing some common sense approaches to dealing with activists will help you plan or refine your existing plan to respond to the challenges with strength and confidence. Preparation will assist you in educating the public and policy makers on the value of your work with animals. There will be time for questions and shared experiences. Learning objectives for the session: 1) The well-being of animals is not the end goal of animal rights groups. 2) The law treats ownership of animals with a balance of rights and responsibilities, and owners need to use the law to protect their animals from activist activities. 3) The good work being done to educate the public and advance the health and welfare of animals through fairs and exhibitions is at risk of being undone by the animal rights agenda.Presented by Linda Chezem, J.D.-Retired as the first female circuit court judge in Indiana and from the Indiana Court of AppealsSponsored by Protect the Harvest
