PREVIOUS MEETING (St. Aug 52, Lincoln (Pa.) 21 - Sept. 25, 2010 - West Grove, Pa.) - Saint Augustine’s College amassed a season-high 495 total offensive yards in a 52-21 win over Lincoln (Pa.) University at Avon Grove High School Stadium. The Falcons wasted little time against the Lions. The lead was 32-7 by halftime, and the Falcons went on to record their highest point total since 2002. Walter Sanders, the CIAA’s rushing leader, continued his string of 100-yard games. His 64-yard touchdown run in the first quarter set the tone for the Falcons. He finished with 15 carries for 111 yards, becoming the first Falcon runner in the modern era to reach the century mark three consecutive contests. The Falcons outscored the Lions 26-7 in the second quarter to turn the game into a rout. Joaquin Green completed 7 of 11 passes for 160 yards for the Falcons. Jamian Smith led Falcon receivers with three catches for 72 yards and a touchdown. The Falcons’ defense did its part as well, holding the Lions to 220 offensive yards including 79 on the ground. LAST GAME (New Haven 50, St. Aug 14 - Sept. 10, 2011 - West Haven, Conn.) - Saint Augustine’s College led early, but the University of New Haven caught fire in the third quarter to rout the Falcons 50-14 in a non-conference football game at DellaCamera Stadium. The Chargers scored on all five possessions in the third quarter. The first four scoring drives allowed them to outscore the Falcons 23-0 in the quarter. The fifth scoring drive resulted in a fourth-quarter touchdown for the final margin. For the game, the Chargers scored nine of 14 possessions including six straight between the second and third quarters. Six possessions ended in touchdowns for the Chargers, who amassed 443 offensive yards including 209 on the ground. The 50 points were the most allowed by the Falcons since a 56-6 loss to Fayetteville State on Oct. 24, 2009. The Falcons (1-2) gained most of its 325 offensive yards through the air. Sophomore Teddy Bacote was 26-for-40 for a career-high 316 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Tyron Laughinghouse of the Falcons had a career day in the loss, catching six passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Defensive tackle Shonquez Nelson and linebacker Chaz Robinson of the Falcons led all players with 12 total tackles each. (Lincoln (Pa.) 19, Virginia Union 10 - Sept. 17, 2011 - West Grove, Pa.) - Daron Jones scored on a 60-yard interception return early in the fourth quarter and Lincoln University held off Virginia Union 19-10 at Avon Grove High School. The win snapped a 13-game CIAA losing streak for the Lions. Jones’ interception with 12:30 left gave Lincoln a commanding 19-0 lead as the extra point was blocked. Laquan Williams was 20-of-40 passing for 207 yards and one touchdown for the Lions. Matthew Coston led Lincoln receivers with 130 yards on seven catches, while Philip Jean-Juste had six for 26 yards. Defensively, Brandon McElwee led the Lions with 10.5 tackles, including a sack of 11 yards.

HEAD COACH MICHAEL COSTA ENTERS 10TH SEASON AT ST. AUG Michael Costa enters his tenth season at Saint Augustine’s College as one of themost respected head coaches in the CIAA. The 2003 and 2005 CIAA football coach of the year, Costa is an energetic leader who instills discipline and intensity in his players. Costa is the Falcons’ only head coach since the school revived football in 2002. During his tenure at Saint Augustine’s College, Costa has produced four All-Americans (Kevin Jones, Alex Hall, Marcus Kennedy, Walter Sanders) and 31 All-CIAA players including 14 fi rst-team selections. Several former players have gone on to professional careers including former standout Alex Hall, who currently plays for the NFL’s New York Giants. Some have embarked on coaching careers such as Tyrone Pettaway, who recently joined the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an assistant coach.

FALCONS APPROVED FOR 2,500-SEAT STADIUM The Raleigh City Council on Tuesday (Sept. 20) unanimously approved a 2,500-seat plan for the George Williams Athletic Complex. With the approval of the plan, the College’s football and track teams will have an on-campus venue for home games. Construction is complete on the project’s fi rst phase, which includes a nine-lane internationally sanctioned track and a FieldTurf playing fi eld. The installation of the seating is included in Phase II.

SMITH IS SIX RECEPTIONS AWAY FROM BREAKING CAREER MARK Jamian Smith needs six catches to become the school’s all-time receptions leader in the modern era. He has 90 career receptions after catching three passes against New Haven on Sept. 10. Andre Brown, who played for the Falcons from 2002 to 2004, is atop the receptions list with 95.

LAUGHINGHOUSE NABS NATIONAL WEEKLY HONOR Tyron Laughinghouse of Saint Augustine’s College gained national recognition for his stellar play against New Haven. Laughinghouse is one of six players across the country who won Division II offensive player of the week honors by Beyond Sports Network, a sports media site that features colleges and players from the FCS, D-II, D-III, and NAIA levels. The junior wide receiver caught six passes for a career-high 164 yards and two touchdowns covering 60 and 40 yards against New Haven. Laughinghouse is a preseason All-CIAA and All-American selection.

NELSON WINS SECOND STRAIGHT CIAA HONOR Sophomore defensive tackle Shonquez Nelson of Saint Augustine’s College won his second straight CIAA defensive lineman of the week award Sept. 12 after playing another outstanding game. The Lake City, S.C., native was a bright spot for the Falcons in a 50-14 loss to New Haven. He accumulated a career-high 12 total tackles (8 solo, 4 assisted) including a sack.

FOUR FALCONS WIN CIAA WEEKLY AWARDS The CIAA honored Jamian Smith, Shonquez Nelson, Antonio Stewart and Head Coach Michael Costa of Saint Augustine’s College Sept. 5 following the Falcons’ impressive 30-5 football win over Catawba College this past weekend. Smith, a junior from Kenansville, N.C., was named receiver of the week. He had nine receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns covering 40 and 26 yards. This is the second league weekly award for Smith, who moved to No. 2 on the school’s career receptions list in the modern era. Smith has won two CIAA receiver of the week awards in his career.Nelson, a sophomore defensive tackle from Lake City, S.C., was selected defensive lineman of the week. He recorded two sacks and two interceptions along with eight total tackles, one forced fumble and two pass break-ups. This is the fi rst CIAA weekly honor for Nelson. Stewart, a freshman linebacker from Ellenwood, Ga., was named rookie of the week. He led the Falcons with nine total tackles and had one interception. This is the fi rst league weekly award for Stewart. Costa was named coach of the week.

He directed the Falcons to their second straight win over Catawba, a member of the highly-regarded South Atlantic Conference. The margin of victory was the largest in the series, which the Falcons lead 3-1. This is the ninth CIAA coach of the week award for Costa.

FALCONS RANKED EIGHTH IN HSRN D-II POLL Saint Augustine’s College is ranked eighth in the latest Heritage Sports Radio Network Division II football poll. The Falcons received 56 votes.

SMITH NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN FAN POLL Senior wide receiver Jamian Smith was voted Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) Division II football player of the week Sept. 7 in an online fan poll. A Kenansville, N.C., native, Smith caught eight passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-5 victory over Catawba last weekend. This is the fi rst national honor for Smith.

MANNING WINS CIAA WEEKLY DEFENSIVE HONOR Junior Derrick Manning (Waldolf, Md.) of Saint Augustine’s College earned CIAA defensive back of the week honors Aug. 29 after recording 11 total tackles against Virginia Union. This is the fi rst CIAA weekly honor for Manning, who tied for the most tackles in the football contest. Two of his tackles were behind the line of scrimmage.

LAUGHINGHOUSE NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CIAA AND ALL-AMERICAN Tyron Laughinghouse of Saint Augustine’s College was named to the preseason All-CIAA football team July 19 as a punt returner and kick returner. The league’s football coaches and sports information directors voted on the squad. This is the second preseason honor this year for Laughinghouse, a rising junior from Greenville, N.C. A 6-foot-3, 175-pound wide receiver and return specialist, Laughinghouse was named to the Consensus Draft Services preseason Division II All-America second team as a kick returner in June.

FALCONS EARN RECEIVING VOTES IN PRESEASON NATIONAL POLL Saint Augustine’s College received three votes in the AFCA Division II Top 25 preseason poll. The Falcons are one of four CIAA teams either ranked or received votes in the poll.

FALCONS PREDICTED TO FINISH THIRD IN THE CIAA Saint Augustine’s College is predicted to be the CIAA’s third-best team. The Falcons are picked to fi nish third in the CIAA’s Southern Division by the league’s football coaches. In 2010, the Falcons placed second in the Southern Division and won the Pioneer Bowl after being picked fourth in the division in the preseason.

RETURNING ALL-CIAA PLAYERS The Falcons return fi rst-team kick returner Tyron Laughinghouse, second-team defensive end Anthony Harris and second-team linebacker Chaz Robinson.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT Lincoln (Pa.) is picked to fi nish sixth in the CIAA Northern Division by the league coaches. The Lions are coached by O.J. Abanishe, who is in his fourth season. The Lions return 35 lettermen including nine offensive starters and nine defensive starters. The Lions lead the CIAA in getting to the quarterback (16 sacks).
