To thee, GC, we lift our praise;
We’ll cherish thee through countless days.
From knowledge gained and friends we’ve made
We’ll enter life, our foundation laid.
Our thoughts of thee will always be
Among our fondest memories.
Our hopes and dreams inspired by you
Will lead us on our whole life through;
Reflections of the years gone by
Created these, our ambitions high.
Our thoughts of thee will always be
Among our fondest memories.
Paul L. Leslie has been senior vice president and chief academic officer of Greensboro College since 2014. Previously, he served at various times as vice president for academic affairs, dean of the faculty, and acting chief executive officer. He also has served on the sociology faculty since 1989 and currently holds the rank of professor.He also has served on or chaired more than 40 committees at the college, on topics ranging from faculty retention to adding football as a varsity sport. He currently is the college’s liaison to
its accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, for which he has carried out site visits to other colleges and universities seeking renewal of their accreditations.During his tenure at Greensboro College, he has taught or co-taught more than 40 different courses (some repeatedly), from Introduction to Sociology to topical seminars and Honors seminars on subjects ranging from the mythology of American success to a social history of rock and roll.Prior to joining the faculty of Greensboro College, Leslie was a research assistant, program assistant, teaching fellow and senior teaching fellow at Boston University, an instructor of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Guilford Technical Community College, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In a 2017 interview for the alumni magazine Points of Pride, Leslie discussed the role he feels Greensboro College, as a community of learners, is obliged to play in society.“I tell my students that we have to be models for the rest of the world,” Leslie said, “because I’m not sure where else it’s being done. …“I’ve seen students flourish here because we are able to model how to engage in sincere, authentic discussions that aren’t always comfortable. … Some things should make us angry. But at GC we should be able to create a space where we can examine and understand anger and go back and say, ‘I’ve been thinking about what you said. Can we talk more about it?’”The sense of community that makes such discussions possible, he said, is more needed than ever.“The value of intellectual pursuit … has become second to consumerism. But Greensboro College provides a place to explore intellectual matters that may reveal our spiritual sides, our intellectual sides, our artistic sides not only for personal aggrandizement but also for the sake of building community through unification of efforts for the benefit of others.”Leslie holds a B.A. in sociology and psychology from Clark University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology, both from Boston University. He and his wife, Jean, have three children and one grandchild.

GREENSBORO COLLEGE PRESIDENTS
THE MACE
During the Middle Ages, the wood mace clad in metal was an effective weapon in battle, but as newer and more powerful military arms developed, it was transformed into a symbol of authority. The earliest ceremonial maces were borne by bodyguards of the 12th century English and French kings; by the end of
the 16th century, they were used widely by officials of English cities and towns. Today the ceremonial mace is found in the British Houses of Parliament, carried before ecclesiastical dignitaries and used in university and college convocations. The present Greensboro College staff of the mace, which is borne by the Faculty Marshal at academic convocation processionals and recessionals, was commissioned in 1982 by Dr. James S. Barrett, 15th president of the College (1981-1984), and carved by Benbow Furniture Company of Greensboro. It was designed to allow the addition of commemorative plates to the staff. The sterling plate affixed to the staff was a gift of the senior class of 1987. During the 2003-2004 academic year, Prof. Bob K. Kowski, Jefferson-Pilot Professor of Art Emeritus, redesigned the mace and gave it its distinctive look.
THE MEDALLION
Used since antiquity as symbols of momentous events as well as affiliations with groups and associations, medallions were important in medieval times as symbols of membership in religious orders and guilds. As part of academic regalia, they may be struck for both ceremonial and commemorative uses. Greensboro College’s silver-plated medallion, worn by the president during academic convocations, was first worn by 12th president Dr. J. Ralph Jolly (1964-1969) for his inauguration on October 28, 1965. Engraved with the College Seal, the medallion was created by Schiffman’s Jewelers of Greensboro. For the Sesquicentennial celebration in 1988, the College commissioned
Schiffman’s Jewelers to design sterling silver links to be added to commemorate the presidents of the College. Each link of the chain bears the name of a Greensboro College president with the date of his or her tenure.
12
The 13 flags behind the platform speakers represent the home nations of today’s graduates. Greensboro College began this tradition with the 2016 Commencement. The world is more interconnected than ever, and Greensboro College is keeping pace. The college is laying the foundation to recruit and support an increasing number of international students and working to bring a broader, more global perspective to campus.
