National History Day

What Is History Day?

National Competition for Grades 6-8Focuses on a theme…Leadership and

Legacy in HistoryStudents create a project by working as a

Historian… Reading and analyzing secondary sources Reading and analyzing primary sources

With some planning, many of the projects we already do in class can be used as part of a

History Day project!

Project Categories

Paper 1500-2500 words; individual only

Exhibit Backboard, museum-type display; individual and

group

Website 1200 word, 100 MB maximum, using program

designed by NHD; individual and group

Performance 10 minutes; individual and group

Documentary short movie; 10 minutes; individual and group

Why Should I Participate in History Day?

This is for students who LOVE history and competition

All participants will receive school awardsAll participants will be eligible for state and

national awardsState winners will be eligible to attend the

National History Day event at the University of Maryland College Park in June, 2015

If you are interested in participating…

Complete and return the application to your History teacher by October 31, 2014

20 students in total will be chosen to participate in History Day (from grades 6, 7, and 8)

Students must be… motivated, willing to work hard, passionate about history, and able to attend after school meetings to prepare

materials.
