It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Casa Colina’s Tribute to Courage. This year we will honorKatherine and Jay Wolf, who have been challenged by a primary question in rehabilitation: what happenswhen an injured person comes home to the family? How can families rebuild their lives together?

Tonight, we will also learn about this critical process from another viewpoint, that of Captain Mark Kelly. He was the Commander of the Space Shuttle Endeavouron its last flight and is also the husband of former US Congresswoman, GabrielleGiffords. He will share his experiences both as a pilot and an astronaut, and as ahusband and a caregiver, witnessing the courage and determination of his wife as she fights her way back to reclaiming her life.

These are incredible stories of courage and perseverance that have a parallel inthe story of Casa Colina itself. We have come a long way in our history as a

rehabilitation provider, from treating twenty children recovering from polio to what you see today: 22,000patient days of care in the hospital annually; 110,000 outpatient visits overall; more than 200 physicians onstaff; and nearly 700 employees. As we take our place on the national stage of rehabilitation providers, weembark on yet another redefinition and crossroads for Casa Colina within a health care industry that faces so many challenges for providers and patients trying to access the most appropriate level of care.

In order to meet those challenges, we are beginning another major expansion - adding 31 beds to ourhospital and a medical office building. This will expand our continuum of care and give patients andphysicians rapid access to a wealth of diagnostic and therapeutic options. These strategic expansions willsafeguard our ability to remain viable, whatever changes may come.

But our first focus is, of course, the individual patient sitting knee to knee with each clinician every day. When patients come to Casa Colina their need is immediate, but the resources to pay are not always available. This Tribute to Courage helps maintain our free care fund which is frequently used to extend a patient’s careso his or her potential can truly be reached, and to supplement unreimbursed services, such as on-sitehousing for families under special critical circumstances. This attention to the individual needs of patientsand their families provides the extra element of care that makes real the “opportunity to achieve maximumpotential,” which defines our mission.

Felice L. Loverso, Ph.D.President & CEO, Casa Colina, Inc.

Seventy-five years ago, twelve people gathered in the Mayor of Claremont’s office to hear Mrs. FrancesEleanor Smith explain a pressing need of hundreds of children who, thanks to the invention of the ironlung, had survived polio but had no way of preparing for the rest of their lives. The solution was clear:

organize a facility where these children could rehabilitate their bodies andspirits using the most advanced techniques. Out of that meeting and that need,Casa Colina was born and local people rallied to its support.

Today, Casa Colina has grown to serve more than 10,500 adults andchildren every year with a wide variety of medical conditions and disabilities. A volunteer board still governs Casa Colina and we are still supported bycommunity members, people like you, who understand the profound value thatrehabilitation can have. I would like to thank my fellow board members for the

energy and insight that they bring to their participation and their unwavering commitment to makingCasa Colina a center of excellence in rehabilitation and medical care.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank the staff of Casa Colina for what they do every day. The healing and progress that they bring to individual patients are the reasons why we on the Boardremain committed and why Casa Colina deserves your support. The work that they accomplishtogether, as a team, is what makes Casa Colina a center of excellence and points out to us what liesahead – how we can continue to improve rehabilitation and medical care.

We welcome Captain Mark Kelly and Katherine and Jay Wolf to Casa Colina’s Tribute to Courage. We are honored that they are sharing their stories with us and hope, with that sharing, we can betterunderstand what we must be as an organization as we move forward.

Katherine and Jay Wolf werecollege sweethearts. Aftermarrying at the age of 22,these Southerners moved to California. The youngcouple lived an idyllic life by the beach in Malibu. He studied law at Pepperdine; she began modelingand acting. They had a baby boy.

On April 21, 2008, the unthinkable happened. While their son napped peacefully in his crib,Katherine collapsed on the kitchen floor while making lunch. Jay arrived home and found his youngwife in distress. He called 911. She was rushed toUCLA Medical Center where doctors discovered she had massive bleeding in her brain caused by acongenital brain defect – an arteriovenousmalformation (AVM).

Her doctors performed 16 hours of intricate brainsurgery to save her life. They removed 60% of hercerebellum. Thankfully, Katherine’s cognition andmental faculties were still intact. Yet her motor controlwas completely gone and the right side of her face was paralyzed.

She spent 40 days in intensive care at UCLA, then another three months in its neuro-acute rehabunit before she was transferred to Casa Colina’sTransitional Living (TLC) for its short-term

residential rehabilitationprogram. Jay moved into one ofthe Casa Colina homes adjacent

to the 20-acre medical and rehabilitation campus withtheir young son, so they could be there to support her. On November 10, 2008, she moved into the Casa Colina home with her family and received hertherapy through TLC’s day treatment program.

Dr. Yong Lee, board-certified physiatrist, oversawher medical care. She spent up to six hours a day inindividual and group therapy working with anoccupational therapist, physical therapist, neuropsychologist, and speech language pathologistto re-learn the skills that once came so easily to her.

“James was eating baby food when I was trying toswallow baby food. James was learning to walk when I was re-learning to walk. James was learning to talkwhen I was re-learning how to talk. It was crazy!”Katherine stated.

After more than a year at Casa Colina, the familywas ready to leave its campus and found a home in Los Angeles. Jay is now an attorney and Katherine hashad additional facial surgeries to restore her ability tosmile. Their entertaining son James, now four, givesher ample opportunity to work on developing her grin. Each day, her smile grows wider and brighter.

Bonnie Hunt is a versatile andaccomplished writer, director, producer and an Emmy, GoldenGlobe and SAG Award nominatedactress, earning critical acclaim infilm, television and theater.

Growing up in one of Chicago’s blue-collarneighborhoods, Hunt pursued an acting career withthe famous Second City improvisational theater while continuing to work as an Oncology nurse atNorthwestern Memorial Hospital. She soon becamefamiliar to audiences with her unforgettable cameos in such films as Rain Man, where she played thetoothpick-dropping waitress, and in Dave as theWhite House tour guide. Her improvised line, “We’re walking, we’re walking…” quickly becamefamous as people embraced Hunt’s unique accessiblebrand of humor.

Hunt’s television accomplishments areconsiderable and innovative. Bonnie made televisionhistory when she became the first person to write, produce and star in a prime time series. Bonnieencouraged incorporating improvisation into herprime time series and this ambitious vision soonbecame a popular trend. But she didn’t stop there.Hunt produced her show using five cameras instead of four, integrated overlapping dialogue and electednot to use the then standard laugh track. Today manyof Hunt’s techniques are used on prime time and cable television.

She went on to create three critically acclaimedseries – writing, producing, directing and starring

in The Building on CBS and Life with Bonnie for ABC, whereshe earned Emmy and GoldenGlobe nominations.

Continuing to build animpressive film resume, Hunt

received rave reviews for her roles including TomCruises’ scrutinizing sister-in-law in Jerry Maguire,Tom Hanks’ wife in The Green Mile, Robin Williams’love interest in Jumanji, Random Hearts withHarrison Ford, Norman Jewison’s Only You, CheaperBy The Dozen and Cheaper By The Dozen 2 with SteveMartin, and the family hits, Beethoven and Beethoven’s2nd. For MGM Bonnie wrote, directed and acted in thetimeless, highly praised feature film, Return To Me.Her long association with Disney/Pixar has includedstarring roles in the animated hits A Bug’s Life,Monsters Inc., and most recently, Hunt not onlystarred but received a writing credit in the Pixar classic Cars.

Bonnie has also been seen every weekday on her own nationally syndicated talk show, The Bonnie Hunt Show.

Bonnie is dedicated to giving back. Hercommitment in raising funds to sponsor medicalresearch is remarkable. The funds raised have gone to many foundations close to her own heart, includingthe Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute, The Make AWish Foundation, The Christopher and Dana ReeveFoundation, American Veterans, The ArthritisFoundation, ALS, and The Robert H. For most people, recovery from the minor accidents and

sicknesses of everyday life is something we can manage on

our own with only a trip to the doctor, an aspirin, or just a

good night’s rest.

But there are incidents, accidents and diseases that we

don’t spring back from easily. They range from the tennis

elbow that doesn’t get better, to work-related back pain

that’s so bad you stay home from work for weeks on end, to

a brain injury that leaves you without the ability to speak or

swallow, or to a spinal cord injury that leaves you without

the ability to walk. Rehabilitation provides care and service

to individuals with any of the above.

For some, rehabilitation is a visit to a physical therapist

to help you bend that tennis elbow. For others,

rehabilitation is a program of several weeks with a therapy

team to build strength back into your body and to learn

how to manage your back pain while going back to work

and taking care of family responsibilities. And for others,

rehabilitation may be the gradual process of relearning

how to swallow or learning new skills for getting around –

such as using a wheelchair – to substitute for skills that are

no longer possible.

Rehabilitation is a process that provides medical and

rehabilitative care and teaches people how to make the most

of a life that may have recently changed due to an accident,

injury or disease. It addresses the individual physically,

mentally and socially. It helps people find new ways to

accomplish the basic activities of daily living such as moving

from room to room, dressing, communicating with others,

driving a car and fixing a meal. It can help prepare an

individual for moving on in life after an injury or disease,

to go back to a job or school, and to take care of everyday

needs. Mastery of these types of skills allows individuals to

move back into the normal stream of life with their families

and at the workplace, and in society as a whole.

In short, effective rehabilitation can and should enhance

the quality of life for those who choose to use the many

services available at a comprehensive rehabilitation facility.
