Welcome to our Faithful Parishioners and All Those who may be ‘Just Visiting’
Jesus washed the feet of his apostles at the Last Supper as a sign of loving service, instructing them “as I have done this to you so must you do for one another.” We as a family of faith strive to live this commandment of love in doing all that we can to welcome you as we invite you to be an active member of this community. Welcome new parishioners! If you are new to our parish, I invite you to introduce yourself to me or any of the other priests after Sunday Mass, or when you come into the rectory to register. Even though we are a large parish, we make every effort to come to know you and your family personally so that we may be better able to serve you. So please be sure to say hello! -Fr. Ken

Fr. Ken’s Corner
Dear Sisters and Brothers of Saint Rose of Lima Parish,
As you might already know, this year we have been observing and celebrating the 100th anniversary of the appearance of Our Blessed Mother to the three young shepherd children at Fatima. Hopefully you also know that today, November 5, our Parish of St. Rose is fortunate to have the honor of hosting the pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima. Hopefully, you’ve been able to receive all the details through the bulletin and electronic communication devices.
As we recognize this Marian apparition, perhaps we should pause and ask ourselves what makes it so special? Part of the wonder of Mary’s appearance at Fatima is that Our Blessed Lady appeared to three simple children, and that, in and of itself, is important. Mary did not appear before a pope or a cardinal or a bishop or any other powerful world figure. Instead, in appearing before Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta, three simple children who at the time could neither read nor write, Mary again emphasizes and parallels the words of the beautiful prayer of the Magnificat, “For he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.” In appearing to three children, we are reminded by this lowly servant of God’s great love for the humble; God’s great love for children. Our Blessed Mother reminds us that anyone can be God’s chosen symbol. Anyone can become God’s chosen instrument for reasons known only to God.
The journey of these three children was not easy. Any person who proclaims that they have seen the Mother of God will be met with suspicion. Yet each of them opened themselves to the grace of God. Each of them trusted in these divine promptings, even when there was great skepticism of their claims. Without our being visited personally by the Blessed Mother, we are reminded of how often in our lives in so many difficult and diverse situations that we, too, need to place our confidence and faith in God.
And in opening ourselves to awe and wonder of God’s life of grace, we also open ourselves to the immensity of God’s love. Francisco and Jacinta did not live many years after their visitation with Mary. Lucia died in 2005. It is important for us, however, to remember that in our relationship with God, whether we have many days left on this earth or only a few, we are to live those days with an intensity which recalls the great honor to which we are called as CHILDREN OF GOD.
It should interest us that three popes have returned to Fatima. They have returned in humility to fulfill Our Lady’s request to pray the rosary for peace in the world and in returning, they have themselves prayed, asking for the gift of world peace. Many people around the world despair that with all the tensions in the world we read about, that peace could ever become a reality. Yet Pope John Paul, Pope Benedict and Pope Francis show us that praying the rosary, beseeching Mary’s intercession, is indeed the best and perhaps the only way that world peace can be known. Certainly, world peace cannot happen without prayer, and history has proven that human efforts alone cannot achieve so great a miracle.
Last month we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, and in the month of October, we offered special days for our religious formation children to learn how to pray the rosary. We gather today in imitation of Pope Francis who earlier this year made the pilgrimage to Fatima to venerate Our Blessed Mother and to offer his prayers for peace. Even as we pray for peace on earth, we also have a greater goal. Amid the ‘Hail Marys’ that we offer, may our closing words always be, “O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary – O most Holy Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death, that we may be made worthy of the promises of your Son, Jesus Christ.”

Rosary/Altar Society
The next meeting of the Rosary/Altar Society will be held on Monday, November 6 in the Rectory Meeting Room after the 7:30 pm Mass. The “Rosary for
all Souls” will be prayed beginning at 7:00 pm, followed by the 7:30 Mass and Miraculous Medal Novena. There will be a special guest at the meeting… Amityville Dominican Sister Shamus Eileen Dwyer who taught 6th grade at St. Rose from 1964-1971. She is coming back to share her life experiences with St. Rose and will be discussing her book, The Spirit: ‘Neath the Habit, true stories based on funny things that happened to her during her religious life, two of which took place right in this area. Sister is looking forward to seeing both alumni and parishioners. Please remember to bring a “gift of warmth” for our veterans in Northport, i.e. hats, gloves, scarves, white socks, mostly large and extra large sizes. Refreshments will be served. As a reminder, Rosarians are asked to wear your ‘blue sashes’ on Sunday, November 5 when you meet in the narthex 15 minutes before attending the 11:00 am Mass, celebrating the Visitation of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue. See further details in the bulletin. And one more thank you—Our Chocoholic Candy Sale was a HUGE success. It will enable us to help others in our parish.

The kindergarten children in St. Rose of Lima School were busy investigating pumpkins. They measured the height and the circumference, and they weighed the pumpkins. They experimented to see how much water was needed to float the pumpkins.
The Green Team welcomed new members at our last meeting. The club's president, Shea Salamack, along with other officers, inducted the 4th grade members. Each received a recycling pin to wear. The Green Team looks forward to recycling and reusing to make our earth a better place to live.
Students of grade 7 studied the concept of scale and scale drawings in mathematics class. As a culminating activity, each student enlarged, to scale, his/her favorite comic.

St. Rose of Lima Parish Outreach
Midnight Run Date is Friday, December 8th! Prep Night will be Thursday, December 7th at Outreach
What is Midnight Run?
In August 2016 St. Rose did our first Midnight Run. The night before the run we had 30 volunteers of all ages at Outreach. They sorted, organized and boxed clothing and toiletries, along with a team doing food prepa-ration. The night of the run we had 5 vehicles and 20 people who went to NYC. We delivered food and clothes to the homeless at three pre-designated stops around Manhattan. There was a wonderful exchange with the homeless and each of them deeply thankful. At the final stop we spent nearly an hour talking to and ministering to those in need. That evening the weather was beautiful and we did not feel the discomfort of living on the street. This Midnight Run will give us a deeper understanding of the hardship of living outside in inclement weather. For those who are unable to join us on either night, we ask for your prayers.
Midnight Run is a volunteer organization dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless.
