JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Thinking bridgeBy Eddie Kantar

Dlr: South ♠ 8 6 5 4 Vul: N-S ♥ 9 4 2 ♦ 4 3 2 ♣ 9 3 2 ♠ 7 3 2 ♠ J 10 9 ♥ 10 8 7 ♥ K J 6 3 ♦ K Q 8 6 5 ♦ A 10 9 7 ♣ 6 5 ♣ 8 7 ♠ A K Q ♥ A Q 5 ♦ J ♣ A K Q J 10 4 West North East South 2♣ Pass 2♦ Pass 3♣ Pass 3♦ Pass 5♣ All Pass

Opening lead: ♦K.Bidding commentary: How should one

respond to a 2♣ opening bid with a bust (no ace, no king and no two queens)? One method is to respond 2♥ directly. Another is to start with 2♦, denying a strong suit. If opener bids 2♥ or 2♠, a rebid of 3♣, artificial, shows a bust. If opener bids 3♣, a 3♦ rebid by responder, artificial, shows a bust.

Another possibility is to show high-card points at once by steps. A fourth method is to show controls (ace and kings) by steps. Each method has its plusses and minuses. What’s important is a partnership agreement. Even a bad agreement is better than no agreement. In this case, 2♦ followed by 3♦ over 3♣ was used to show a bust.

Defensive commentary: East plays the ♦10 at trick one, higher equal when encouraging. Given the looks of this dummy, a passive defense (avoid breaking new suits) is in order. As West, continue with a low diamond at trick two as requested.

Play commentary: As South, ruff the second diamond high! If clubs divide 2-2, you can pull trumps then use ♣9 for an entry to dummy – assuming you saved the precious ♣4. After clubs divide 2-2, it can’t cost to play your spades in case the suit breaks 3-3. It’s your lucky day: they do! Now it is easy enough to cross to the ♣9, discard a heart on dummy’s ♠8, and take the heart finesse for an overtrick. Be sure to tell your partner after you make an overtrick that in the future you expect her to bid more aggressively with wonderful hands.

When holding a powerful trump suit facing a bleak dummy and forced to ruff early, consider ruffing high rather than low. That low trump may be your salvation – it may be your only entry to dummy!

Have you discussed? Defensive signals

By Brent ManleyIn this series,

I have stressed how important it is for partners to be on the same page in the bidding. The best way to accomplish that goal is to work on it. That means lots of discussions. My wife and I had an effective partnership for some years by practicing our bidding regularly and keeping a book of our agreements for referral when questions came up.

We also worked on our defensive signals and we became good defenders, taking most of the tricks we were entitled to when we were on defense.

In my years of playing bridge, I have noticed that many new players do not truly give signals on defense. The closest they come is to discard from a suit they want led. If someone pitches the ♥2, I know that player has some high cards in hearts.

I do not recommend this scheme for signaling on defense. You are better off using standard defensive signals indicating “count” and “attitude.”

In case you need clarification on these two concepts, count signals are meant to indicate whether the number of cards held in a suit is an even number or an odd number. Attitude is meant to indicate whether you want that suit led or continued. It can also indicate that you have high cards in the suit in case partner needs help deciding what to discard.

The count signal is vitally important in many cases. This one is common:

Dummy ♠ 6 5 2 ♥ Q 9 7 ♦ K Q J 10 9 ♣ 7 6

You ♠ 9 8 7 ♥ A 10 8 5 ♦ A 6 3 ♣ 6 4 3

South opens 1NT (15-17) and North bids 3NT. Your partner leads the ♣J, which is taken by South with the ace. At trick two, South leads the ♦4. You know this is a key suit for declarer, so you will have to play carefully to keep him from scoring four diamond tricks. Declarer has at least two diamonds (he wouldn’t open 1NT with a singleton), so you are going to have to withhold your ♦A at least once. If you win the first diamond, declarer will have four diamond tricks because you know he has

at least one more. You are counting on partner to provide the information you need to play low the correct number of times. This situation is why it’s important to discuss signaling. With an odd number of diamonds, West should play his lowest diamond. With an even number, he plays high, starting a high-low signal to show two cards in the suit (West cannot have four diamonds because that would leave South with only one).

On this occasion, partner plays the ♦2, which is a singleton or the lowest card of three. If it’s a singleton, declarer will always have four diamond tricks. You must hope partner’s card is from a holding of three.

Declarer plays the king and you play low. Now declarer calls for the ♦Q. What’s your play?

If partner started with three diamonds, declarer has only one left. You must win the ♦A and return a club. Dummy is now dead and declarer will go down. If you had taken the first diamond, South would have made his contract. Declarer’s hand:

♠A K 3 ♥J 3 2 ♦5 4 ♣A K Q 5.

Joseph Schoensee of San Diego has been playing for four years, but it could have been a lot longer. “I found (bridge) when I was a kid, but I couldn’t find anybody to play with me when I was 7, so I didn’t think about it for 20 years.” Now 33, he’s not only playing at his first NABC but also took the class and passed the test to become a club director. “I’m loving it,” he said.

and enjoying bridge or thinking very hard during a tough board. I hope that my pictures can go outside the world of bridge and show everybody what an amazing mixture of fun and mental challenge this game is.”

All around the worldShe performs similar functions for other bridge

organizations: Her bridge assignments take her all over the world, working for the World Bridge Federation, the European Bridge Federation and other national bridge organizations and invitational tournaments. From San Diego she flies directly to China for the invitational IMSA Elite Mind Games in Huai’an, China. There she will write the daily bulletins in addition to doing the photography.

She primarily works for the Italian Bridge Federation, where she writes and lays out the bulletins, posts website news, manages the blog and attends championships. “In Italy, we have more championships than in America – at least one a month – but they are much smaller.”

Francesca lives in Padova, Italy, a small town in the northeast part of the country close to Venice, but she isn’t there much. All told, Francesca estimates she spends 36 weeks of the year away from home.

Francesca was introduced to the ACBL by Brent Manley, retired Bridge Bulletin editor and one of the daily bulletin editors who covers bridge events around the world.

“I worked with Francesca at numerous tournaments overseas,” says Brent, “and it was obvious to me right away that she is serious about her work as a photographer. She is small in stature but big in determination.”

Brent says that Francesca is never satisfied until she gets just the right shot. “I’ve never seen a bad photo from Francesca. I convinced the ACBL that calling on Francesca to take photos at NABCs would be in the organization’s best interest. I am happy to say I was proved right – and then some. Francesca is a gem – a valuable member of the team.”

While Francesca is best known throughout the bridge community for her photography, she grew up as the writer in the family. She has interviewed and profiled some of the best players in the game including Thomas Bessis, Benito Garozzo, Dennis Bilde and Michal Klukowski. She plans to interview Brad Moss in China later this month.

“I like writing articles very much,” she says, “but I think that photos are very powerful because they are more immediate. Plus, photography is an international language that does not need to be translated.”

A BBO director when she was 20, Francesca had the chance to be a BBO operator at a World Championships. During the event she took pictures of players to post in a blog for home spectators.

“The blog had so many visitors that I decided to run it after the championship was over,” she says, “and I added bridge-related articles. The president of the Italian Bridge Federation liked the idea and asked me to run a news website for the Federation … provided that I would close my own blog.”

Slow PlaySlow play, especially habitual slow play, is a

violation of law and subject to penalty. When a pair has fallen behind, it is incumbent on them to make up the time lost as quickly as possible whether at fault or not. All players are expected to make a concerted effort to catch up when they have fallen behind, regardless of the reason for their lateness.

In the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, the director should presume that a pair finishing a round late by more than two or three minutes on more than one occasion during a session is responsible for the lateness. There is a strong expectation that the director will penalize such a pair. The size of a penalty will tend to increase for subsequent instances of slow play and for chronic or egregious slow play.

While warnings typically will be given before a penalty is assessed, failure to do so in no way limits the director’s authority to issue a penalty.

Players are expected to be aware, in a general sense, of time used and remaining in a segment in which they are playing regardless of whether a clock is in use or a time announcement has been made. An excuse of “no announcement” or “no

clock immediately visible” will not be considered persuasive.

In consultation with the DIC of the tournament, the TD may require that a particular pair not play in a specified segment, not play against a specified pair or not play together as a pair. The foregoing is expected to be applied only due to egregious circumstances or to unduly repetitious offenders.

An appeal of an action taken by a TD with regard to time may be taken to the Director in Charge of the tournament, and no further. For NABC+ KO events, the TD is charged with the responsibility to ensure that each KO match segment finishes within the allotted time. While a time monitor may be employed, the lack of a monitor in no way limits the TD’s authority to apply one or more of the remedies listed below.

The TD may choose to ignore an occasional minor late finish. The TD may remove one or more boards from a segment. The TD may award no score (when neither team is more at fault), an assigned score (when a result already exists at one table which the TD wishes to preserve) or an artificial score in IMPs. Every effort should be made to remove boards before they can be played at either table, but not having done so does not preclude removing one or more later.

Young loveFrancesca started playing bridge for romantic

reasons. “My mum is a bridge teacher in Italy,” she says.

“I was not much interested in the game and did not want to learn till a handsome boy joined her courses. I immediately fell in love with him.”

The local club organized an “open air” game in the square, and the handsome boy did not have a partner. That was all the motivation Francesca needed. The teenage girl undertook intensive lessons from her mother over two days to get ready to play.

She says that when the day of the tournament came, she felt her head was exploding because there were too many things to remember.

“I was extremely worried because I was sure that I would make mistakes and look stupid. When we sat down at the table in the middle of the square, my hands were trembling, and I did not even remember how to count points. But suddenly a heavy summer storm came and the organization had to dismiss the tournament because of the weather. We found a shelter in a bar and talked all the day long and finally ended up together!”

She says she wishes she could play more, “but I don’t have much time.”

Playing in a 299er game in the San Diego NABC, Francesca and partner Stephanie Threlkeld – who is ACBL’s Education and Communications manager – placed second overall and first in Flight C.

“That was my biggest achievement,” she says with a radiant smile. “We got a beautiful trophy! I love my trophy.”

If you see her camera pointed your way, smile and say, “Ciao, Francesca!”

On the third and final day, they survived the following deal from the second final session to move up from 27th place after the first final session to 21st overall at the end.

Ekeblad won the club switch with dummy’s ace and he continued with the ♠J to Zia’s queen. That board helped Ekeblad and Brenner to move up from 28th after the first final session to 15th overall.

Grand ideasBy Phillip Alder

Playing in a pairs game, with your side vulnerable, you hold:♠J ♥A K Q 9 2 ♦9 2 ♣A K J 10 5.

The bidding begins: West North East South You Partner Pass 1NT (1) Pass 2♦ (2) Pass 2♥ Pass 3♣ Pass 3♥ Pass ?

(1) 15-17(2) Transfer to heartsHow would you continue?Suppose you drive it to 7♥ in this fashion:

West North East South You Partner Pass 1NT (1) Pass 2♦ (2) Pass 2♥ Pass 3♣ Pass 3♥ Pass 4NT Pass 5♥ Pass 7♥ All Pass

This deal was played by me and Frani Ridder. I was North. We were using regular Blackwood.

Put yourself in Ridder’s place. How would you play to make 13 tricks? Dlr: East ♠ J Vul: N-S ♥ A K Q 9 2 ♦ 9 2 ♣ A K J 10 5

♠ A Q 9 4 ♥ J 10 5 ♦ A Q 3 ♣ Q 9 6

West led a trump from three low. My partner drew trumps and ran the clubs, coming down to this position: ♠ J ♥ Q 9 ♦ 9 2 ♣ —

♠ A Q 9 ♥ — ♦ A Q ♣ —

West has parted with three spades and one diamond, East with two diamonds. How would you continue? Ridder led the ♠J to her ace and ruffed the ♠9 in dummy. Then she might have cashed her last trump, but that risked down two if West had both kings. Instead, she took the diamond finesse to land the grand slam and give us 59.5 matchpoints out of 64. The full deal: ♠ J ♥ A K Q 9 2 ♦ 9 2 ♣ A K J 10 5 ♠ K 10 8 6 5 3 ♠ 7 2 ♥ 7 6 3 ♥ 8 4 ♦ 6 5 4 ♦ K J 10 8 7 ♣ 3 ♣ 8 7 4 2 ♠ A Q 9 4 ♥ J 10 5 ♦ A Q 3 ♣ Q 9 6

The pair is hoping to make it back to the winner’s circle one more time in the Mixed Swiss.

Sitting in second is the John McAllister squad: Peter Fredin, Peter Bertheau, Daniel Zagorin and Jacob Roen.

Missing from the list of qualifiers are some big names: the Jimmy Cayne team, the Lavazza team and the Fleisher squad all failed to make the cut. 20 teams will be trimmed to 10 for final play on Sunday.

Delicious lossI enjoyed the article in the Daily Bulletin “When

It’s Good For The Game To Lose.” A few years ago, I teamed up with Martin Henneberger and a pair of Thai gentlemen in the Swiss Teams event at the annual Bangkok tourney.

“Hamburger” and I had already won the Swiss Pairs event, but on the last hand of the team event yours truly screwed up an XYZ auction to land us second, a pip of a victory point out of the win.

The winners turned out to be a foursome of young college kids from here in Thailand (where I am currently hanging my hat). They were so thrilled and “over the moon” with their win that none of us minded eating the loss. We felt almost as thrilled for them as they did!

An unsung heroI would like to give thanks to a woman who I

know works tirelessly for the bridge community: Marjorie Michelin.

She is not a listed volunteer nor does she receive any benefits for her efforts. Those in the know know her as the secret partnership desk. She has an uncanny way of matching partners of equal strength. She does this even at tournaments where she isn’t in attendance. Even at the last minute, you can see her running around to put together a team or partnership; some pairs have developed into lasting partnerships as well as friendships.

When her husband fell ill, she kept on doing what she does. Her phone never stops ringing, and she also helps players out finding rides, roommates and more. At the parties, she dances with everyone and makes everyone happy with her infectious smile.

She is a great teacher/mentor and all-around “Grand Life Master of Goodwill.” We are all fortunate to have her amongst us and I am particularly pleased to call her my friend.

No slam, partner?By Barry Rigal

The late Rixi Markus penned a volume titled, “Bid Boldly, Play Safe.” Marty Fleisher, fresh off his world title in Lyon, has announced the first volume of his projected autobiographical trilogy will be tentatively titled, “Bid boldly, play like a lunatic.” This deal, from the first semifinal session of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs, will be on the title cover. Fleisher was playing with Chip Martel. Dlr: East ♠ A 10 9 7 5 3 Vul: N-S ♥ — ♦ K 7 4 ♣ 8 7 6 5 ♠ K ♠ 6 4 ♥ J 4 ♥ A K Q 10 9 7 6 ♦ Q 10 8 6 3 ♦ 9 2 ♣ Q 10 9 4 2 ♣ K J ♠ Q J 8 2 ♥ 8 5 3 2 ♦ A J 5 ♣ A 3 West North East South Fleisher Martel 1♥ Dbl 1NT (1) 4♠ 5♥ Pass Pass 5♠ All Pass

(1) ClubsHaving bid spades five levels higher than I

managed with his cards, Fleisher had to justify his approach after a top heart lead. He ruffed and decided East had the singleton ♠K, so he laid down the ace. Right result, wrong idea, but it’s results that count. Now Fleisher crossed to the ♣A to ruff a heart and then played a low club from hand to East’s king. Fleisher won East’s diamond shift with the ace, ruffed a third heart, ruffed a club, ruffed a heart then drew the last trump. This was the position as Fleisher played the ♠Q:

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal

a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

West could not keep his guard in both minors and Fleisher had 12 tricks. Martel consoled the opponents: “You were lucky he didn’t bid the slam.”

How come no one else found the play?

By Barry RigalAfter the first final session of the Mitchell Board-

a-Match Teams, Steve Sanborn was full of praise for his wife’s play in 4♠ doubled . . . but nobody else recognized the deal. Steve and Kerri played against Dennis Bilde and Giorgio Duboin. Dlr: West ♠ 3 Vul: N-S ♥ 8 7 2 ♦ 6 5 2 ♣ A K J 7 5 2 ♠ Q 10 9 8 6 4 2 ♠ K 7 5 ♥ A 4 ♥ J 10 6 ♦ A Q 7 ♦ J 8 3 ♣ 3 ♣ Q 10 9 8 ♠ A J ♥ K Q 9 5 3 ♦ K 10 9 4 ♣ 6 4 West North East South Kerri Bilde Steve Duboin 1♠ 2♣ 2♠ Dbl 4♠ Pass Pass Dbl All Pass

The late John Lowenthal (everyone’s No. 1 choice for “mad scientist on opening lead”) might have led a red suit at trick one. Bilde led a top club and shifted to a diamond: 3, 9, queen.

Kerri played the ♠10 to the king and ace, won the spade return and peeled off the trumps. This was the position as the penultimate trump hit the baize: ♠ — ♥ 8 7 ♦ 6 5 ♣ K J ♠ 4 2 ♠ — ♥ A 4 ♥ J 10 6 ♦ A 7 ♦ J 8 ♣ — ♣ Q ♠ — ♥ K Q 9 ♦ K 10 ♣ 6

Duboin had to discard a heart and then a club on the last spade. Sanborn then played the ♥A and another heart and Duboin was endplayed to concede the last two tricks in diamonds. Plus 590 was good for a win on the board.

So how come no one else knew the deal? It was board 28 in a 14-table section, but other sections had 13 tables so the board was not played there.

Puzzle madness welcomes new addictsIt’s coming! The

excitement is palpable. No, it’s not the arrival of Santa Claus nor the dropping of the ball in Times Square. It is Six Degrees of Madness – formerly known as Puzzleup – an annual rite of January that hardcore puzzle-solvers eagerly anticipate (and during which non-participating spouses go into hibernation). Entrants include editors from Games magazine and several of the top crossword solvers in the country. It should come as no surprise that this elite circle of masochists includes a number of bridge players.

Six Degrees of Madness is the creation of Alan Levine, a bridge player who lives in Massapequa NY. A retired language arts teacher, he has been hosting and continually developing the contest for 34 years.

“Originally, Puzzleup was seven mini-contests,” says Alan, “each unrelated, but with an emphasis on wordplay. I wasn’t totally satisfied with the product. I wanted something more challenging and unique.”

Alan calls himself a sports, movies and theater fanatic interested in word oddities and recreational linguistics. “The questions have gotten harder because in the Internet age, it’s difficult to construct a contest that’s not readily solvable by straightforward Google searches.”

Jan Martel is a big fan. “Puzzleup should come with a notice: ‘WARNING! This puzzle is totally addicting. Do not expect to do anything else for the next few weeks.’”

Chip, Jan’s husband, doesn’t engage in the madness. “He has learned not to try to talk to me the first week and a half of January. It’s great fun. Chip claims that I’m completely unavailable for anything

but the puzzle from January 1 until my team gets all the answers.”

JoAnna Stansby is the culprit who sucked Jan into the madness “I started when JoAnna invited me to join the team she worked with,” says Jan, “which at that time was Barry Rigal and Steve Picus. Later we added Dale Johannessen. Our team is the California Dreamers.”

Bart Bramley and his wife, Judy, puzzle-up together. Actually, they’re part of a team – the Chicago Six. Bart’s teammates are Larry and Adrienne Cohen, Howie Weinstein and Cheri Bjerkan (who originally brought Puzzleup to her friends’ attention).

Bart describes Madness as a work of genius. “It combines trivia (in all of the standard categories) with devilish wordplay. Alan’s depth of knowledge, especially in movies, Broadway plays, sports and popular music, is encyclopedic. Each year when we complete it (and we always do, a badge of honor for us) we heave a big sigh of relief, followed by a bigger sigh of disappointment that we will have to wait another year to do it again.”

Bart says that the nature of the challenge has evolved gradually. “We have always used reference works (almanac, dictionary, atlas, movie and TV compendiums) as basic tools, and at the beginning we would visit the library sometimes. Later, as the Internet and search engines became more powerful, computers became our main tool. Still, I miss the days when we would all gather at Cheri’s house in early January armed with our heavy books, and brainstorm into the wee hours until we had cracked enough questions to gain a foothold into that year’s contest.”

Alan says there were 114 contestants last year. “It takes me at least two weeks to finish plowing through the answer sets.” He welcomes all newcomers. “I would prefer a deluge to a drizzle.”

The 2018 puzzle will go out Jan. 1 and puzzle-solvers have six weeks to submit answers. If you’re a rookie, your entry is free. Otherwise, it’s $20 (which goes into the prize pool) to enter. If you’re interested, email Alan at [email protected].

Listen to the biddingBy Phillip Alder

With only the opponents vulnerable, you pick up:♠K 10 9 5 3 2 ♥K Q 10 9 2 ♦3 ♣10. West North East South 1♦ Pass 1♠ 2♣ 3♦ 4♣ ?

What would you do now? Here is the full deal: Dlr: North ♠ Q Vul: E-W ♥ A 7 4 ♦ A K Q J 10 8 7 ♣ 7 5 ♠ A J 8 7 4 ♠ 6 ♥ J 8 ♥ 6 5 3 ♦ 6 ♦ 9 5 4 2 ♣ A K J 9 8 ♣ Q 6 4 3 2 ♠ K 10 9 5 3 2 ♥ K Q 10 9 2 ♦ 3 ♣ 10

I have rotated this deal to make South the declarer.

It must be right to bid 4♥. Given the vulnerability, partner surely has at most two clubs and therefore some cards in the majors.

West leads the ♣A: 5, 2 (standard count), 10. West cashes the ♠A: queen, 6, 5. West continues with the ♠4. How would you proceed from there?

Against me, West tried to cash the ♣K at trick two, so I took 12 tricks for 58 out of 64 matchpoints. If West had found the devilish defense of the ♠A and another spade, to win 11 tricks I would have had to ruff with dummy’s ♥7 (or ♥A and then guess West for ♥J-x). I am glad I was not tested.
