❖ Hormones are a key part of the endocrine system have a huge influence on our life even before birth. Hormones are chemical messengers that are secreted directly into the blood, which carries them to organs and tissues of the body to exert their functions.
❖ They control the mental and physical growth of a baby and young child.
❖ At puberty, the development in both of the sexes are due to the influence of hormones.
❖ They work as a lock and key with their target organ so they can pass through other organs undetected until they reach their target site.
How do we produce hormones?

❖ 1) The hypothalamus detects the need for hormone X
❖ 2) The hypothalamus sends a releasing factor hormone to the pituitary gland (master gland)
❖ 3) The Pituitary gland sends a message to the relevant endocrine gland (positive feedback) to secrete hormone X into the bloodstream until the body reaches its target organ.
❖ *The hormone may pass through many other organs unnoticed until it reaches its target organ

1) When the target organ has received the required amount hormone X, it rejects the hormone sending a negative feedback to the hypothalamus.
2) The hypothalamus sends an inhibitory factor to the pituitary gland.
3) The pituitary gland sends a message to the relevant endocrine gland to cease production and release of hormone X

❖ One of the main functions of the endocrine system is to achieve and maintain Homeostasis in the body. (The perfect equilibrium).
❖ Homeostasis is defined as an active process by hormones to achieve a stable internal environment known as a Feedback mechanism.
❖ BUT if for one reason or another there is a hypo (not enough) or hyper (too much) secretion then it can have serious health complications.

❖ We are surrounded by many chemicals and pollution in the air we breathe, water we drink etc.
❖ Many chemicals, both natural and man-made, may mimic or interfere with the body’s hormones. Called endocrine disruptors, these chemicals are linked with developmental, reproductive, brain, immune, and other problems.
❖ Endocrine disruptors are found in many everyday products, including some plastic bottles and containers, liners of metal food cans, detergents, flame retardants, food, toys, cosmetics, and pesticides.

❖ Caused by over production of testosterone in females, others causes include: stress, excessive weight loss and anaemia and results in the loss of menstrual cycle and excess hair may develop.

❖ An often painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus — the endometrium — grows outside your uterus. Endometriosis most commonly involves your ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining your pelvis.

❖ Around 1.5 million women in the UK suffer with endometriosis and symptoms include chronic pain, fatigue/lack of energy, depression/isolation, problems with a couple’s sex life/relationships, inability to conceive.
❖ The actual cause of endometriosis is unknown. There are several theories about the cause of endometriosis including auto immune disease and genetics, but none fully explains why endometriosis occurs.
❖ Again we would choose oils for our client based on what symptoms they are struggling with on the day.

❖ “My husband and I have been trying to conceive for three years now with no luck. I have been advised that I don’t ovulate and so our chances to conceive are next to nothing. So now we have been referred to a fertility specialist to start on Clomid to try and encourage my body to ovulate.”
❖ “The physical, mental and emotional effects of endometriosis are debilitating. I cry often and some days I physically can’t get out of bed. It has no cure and, somedays, I feel there is nothing that I can do. Endometriosis affects my relationship, friendships, work life and family, but it is invisible to those around me.”

❖ Using essential oils that supplement oestrogen or effect hormones in some way will not stop or cure the condition itself but will regularise the body so that the effects of the hormonal changes are buffered and the body is given help to adjust to the different levels.
❖ Remember – all essential oils are helpful when attempting to balance the hormonal system as all essential oils will help to balance the whole person – mind, body and spirit.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

May 2020 Fennel essential oil has an affinity with the female reproductive system and has been used to years to help with menstrual cramps, bringing periods on water retention.
It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties as well as being digestive, decongestant and anti septic and generally stimulating due to it’s phenol content.
Anethole is found in aniseed, fennel, star anise and is oestrogen-like, emmenagogic and lactogenic; so it is used to regulate periods and help control hormone deficiency during the menopause.
Roman Chamomile (Chamamelum nobile)

May 2020 Chamomile is known for its anti inflammatory and calming properties being used for eczema, arthritis, inflamed skin, headaches, indigestion, menopausal symptoms.
According to Mojay Chamomile is employed in eastern medicine to help smooth the flow of Qi (life force energy) to clear heat and reduce inflammation.
It is not always a favourite scent so blend it with others to mask the smell

May 2020 An uplifting scent that is also used on muscular cramps and is refreshing to the mind.
Mentally this is a great oil to have in your kit as it is calming to the nervous system and helps prevent stress.
Citral is found in E. staigeriana up to 25% and is characterised by it’s ‘lemon drop’ smell. It can be used during the menopause for balance of the mind and cycle. It is also found in other oils such as Melissa and lemongrass.
Niaouli(Melaleuca viridiflora)

May 2020 Niaouli is used to help regulate periods and to help the body to cope when there is a deficiency of oestrogen. It is most commonly used in aromatherapy for skin abrasions and muscular aches and pains.
Patricia Davis writes that Niaouli is well tolerated by the skin and as such has been used as a vaginal douche for symptoms including painful periods and cystitis.
Viridifloral is a sesquiterpenol that is found up to up to 15% in essential oil of Niaouli which has been shown to be Oestrogenlike influencing ovaries and testicles (Franchomme & Pénoël 2001 p. 398).

May 2020 Carrot Seed is used to treat oedema, anaemia, anorexia, indigestion, liver congestion, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea & PMT as well as glandular problems.
Peneol said that Daucus carota helps regulate the pituitary gland to regulate the production of thyroxin.
Energetically this oil can easily strengthen the spirit by easing the feelings of delicateness and vulnerability by creating a space in the spirit that allows and encourages a sense of inner peace and security.
Carrot seed benefits the mind by easing insomnia as it helps sooth chronic emotional stress which then enables deep relaxation.

❖ Create an oil for topical use on the stomach and lower back areas using 30 drops to 100ml of carrier oil. Choose up to four essential oils that are most relevant to the clients symptoms.
❖ Add 5ml of hydrolat into 200ml of water to be drunk up to twice daily to help ease internal symptoms.
❖ Recommend gentle massage for general pampering and immune boost or relevant home treatments such as bath oils.
