Opening Night 2012! Features Deborrah Wyndham, Lake EffectJazz Big BandPianist and composer Deborrah Wyndham and Lake Effect Jazz Big Band are teaming up for Opening Night2012! of the Howard Performing Arts Center’s 2012–2013 season. This two-concert event will be held onSunday, Aug. 26, on the campus of Andrews University. More than just a great concert, Opening Night 2012!also offers something for all ages with free popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream sundaes and a classic car showstarting at 5 p.m. The concert begins at 7 p.m. This event is a free gift to the community.

Kicking off the evening is ragtime pianist and composer Deborrah Wyndham. Wyndham blends genres ofmusic, creating unique sounds such as the blues arranged with elements of 1930s and 40s jazz. In concert,she performs many of her original pieces as well as traditional jazz styles like ragtime, boogie-woogie and herown arrangements of up-tempo standards. Her sounds also include classically inspired jazz ballads.

Southwest Michigan’s own Lake Effect Jazz Big Band will round out Opening Night 2012! Modeled afterfamous jazz big bands from the 1950s, Lake Effect Jazz brings together 20 of the area’s finest jazzmusicians. From classic to contemporary, their musical arrangements never fail to offer the best jazz soundsin Southwest Michigan.

Lear Jet 23 Donated to the Department of AviationThe Andrews University Department of Aviation recently added a 1966 Lear Jet 23 to its fleet of trainingplanes. Randall J. Latona of the AJM Airline Company in Smyrna, Tenn., donated the plane after receiving arequest from Verlyn Benson, assistant to the president.

In need of an aircraft that would provide students with practical training on the more complex twin turbineengine-powered jet, the department used the FAA registry of business jets to send queries to see if anyowners would be willing to donate an aircraft that would potentially fit their needs. Passing of John KronckeJohn Kroncke, a long time senior pastor of the Pioneer Memorial Church, passed away on Thursday, August 2following a brief illness. He was residing in Loma Linda, Calif. He was 84 years of age. Pastor Kronckefaithfully and effectively served the University congregation from 1966 to 1983, guiding Pioneer MemorialChurch through major chapters of its 53 year history. He is survived by his wife Peggy, and sons Arthur andJohn Jr.

There will be a memorial service for Pastor Kroncke at the Pioneer Memorial Church on Sunday, August 26,at 10 a.m. We pray God’s comfort for the Kroncke family, even as we thank Him for Pastor Kroncke’sleadership in our congregation’s story.
