Experience the magic of a Victorian Christmas at Blists Hill Victorian Town Special Christmas Weekends 3-4 & 10-11 DecemberSoak up the fabulous seasonal Victorian atmosphere and revel in traditional celebrations and entertainment as the townsfolk busily make preparations for Christmas, 1800s style.Be transported to a bygone era as you stroll around the town; listen to tales of life more than 100 years ago as you call-in to cosy cottages, hum along to seasonal music from brass bands and choirs and tour the Town on a horse-drawn cart. No visit will be complete without a visit to see Father Christmas in his wonderful grotto. You can even pet his reindeer before they start their mammoth journey around the world on Christmas Eve.The most perfect Victorian ‘Christmas card scene’, with a stunningly decorated Christmas tree, will be the centrepiece in the Goods Shed where you can also make paperchains, write a letter to Father Christmas and leave a note on our Wishing Tree. The air will be filled with music and laughter around the Town with brass bands, carol singers and Punch & Judy shows. Don’t miss the dastardly villain, his principal enemy and the comical quack doctor, all dressed in garish garb in our traditional Shropshire Christmas Mummers Play. The Victorians loved these early forms of panto, and so will you.A visit will be a great excuse to call in to the shops around the Town, where you will find some unusual Christmas gifts like traditionally made cast-iron paperweights and doorstops, handmade plaster decorations, perfumed soaps, hand printed gift wrap, traditional sweets and Victorian Christmas cards. Local Boys Do Woodside ProudTwo local boys have been rewarded and praised for their honesty in a special assembly at Woodside Primary school.

Jamie Bedworth (11) and Aiden Warren (9) were playing outside the Park Lane Centre on Wednesday 28th September when they noticed a lady’s purse on the ground and rightly decided to take it into the centre to hand it in.

Cllr Kevin Guy said “Myself and Cllr Evans were holding our regular surgery session in the Park Lane Centre when we were approached by both Jamie and Aiden. The boys were extremely polite and said they had found a purse outside.

On inspection the purse contained a considerable amount of money and a large number of personal items. Thankfully it did not take long to track down who the purse belonged to and ensure that it was returned to the highly appreciative owner.”

Cllr Guy made a point of asking for the lads’ names and what school they attended to ensure they were given the praise they duly deserved. Cllrs Guy & Evans thanked the boys and noted “that they were both a shining example of how to behave and an asset to both their school and local Woodside Community.” Cllr Kevin Guy

Unusual visitors to MadeleyAn unusual announcement in the Salopian Journal on August 12 1818 read: “The two New Zealand Chiefs now under the Care of the resident Minister of Madeley, have excited the greatest Interest … Their Countenances are impressive, their Persons commanding, and all combined with such pleasing Traits of true Politeness and genuine Affection, that you quite forget you are in the Society of those whose Country men are the most decided Cannibals!”

The two young Maori men stayed for the summer months at the Vicarage next to St Michael’s church in Madeley with the curate George Mortimer and his family. Mortimer’s friends at the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in London had sent Tooi and Titere to Shropshire to recover from a bronchial infection they caught on their arrival in England in February 1818. Tooi and Titere were pleased to leave London, the home of their “bad friend, Mr Coughee”, as Titere put it.

The evangelical churchmen of Madeley hoped Tooi and Titere would learn to read and write scriptural verses, become converted to Christianity, and return to New Zealand to convert their people. The Maori men had other ideas. Tooi in particular had come to England not only to study the society that he had learned about on whaling ships around New Zealand, but also hoping to get settlers. Tooi’s enemy Hongi Hika had already nabbed the first European settlers in New Zealand; missionaries had arrived in Hongi Hika’s Bay of Islands territory by invitation in 1814. Tooi wanted some settlers for his tribe. European settlers increased trade opportunities for muskets and other modern technologies highly prized by Maori.

The letters that Tooi and Titere wrote through a scribe, and the diaries of their English associates, tell vividly of their adventures in Shropshire. They visited factories, including the Coalport china works where they had a conversation with Mr Rose and made some cups. They saw ‘the iron run down like water’. Titere wrote: ‘I go home tell my countrymen they no believe’.

They visited the Rev John Eyton and his family, in Wellington where they visited Eyton’s school. Tooi reported ‘I say lesson with boys two times a day: all so pleased, me stick peacock feather in my head’ which amused the English schoolboys. They blew some glass bottles at a glassworks, probably at Wrockwardine Wood.

The two men left the district in October for their passage (paid for by the CMS) on a crowded convict ship, the Baring, headed for Australia. They felt a debt of gratitude to the CMS, but they could not abide the demands of religious study and rebelled on their way home, turning against the missionaries. Their visit to England had taught Tooi and Titere a lot about modern musket warfare. Within a couple of years both men were engaged in the deadly inter-tribal musket wars in the north of New Zealand. And Tooi never acquired his settlers.

Professor Alison Jones of the University of Auckland is writing a book on Tooi’s life, to be published in 2017.

Madeley Living History ProjectDuring the summer members of Madeley Living History Project have been working at Shropshire Archives to digitise and catalogue photographs in the collection donated by Telford Development Corporation.

Over 1,200 previously unavailable photographs of Madeley can now be viewed online at www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.

A selection of the photographs will be shown at a presentation by the team at the Madeley Living History Project AGM on the 8th December at Jubilee House.

Early next year, the photographs will also be available to view on the Town Council’s website.

Families in Telford, the amalgamation of Woodside Family Groups Project and Sutton Hill Family Project, is now 3 years old.

Obtaining funding to keep our groups open on Woodside and Sutton Hill has not been easy, being one of thousands of voluntary organisations seeking funding and in April this year we had to close part of our programme due to lack of funding.HENRY (Health, Education, Nutrition for the Really Young) is a national programme and the main principles are used in our delivery for families/under 5s on both estates. This is alternated on a fortnightly basis with an Open Access Drop-in provision for families who may be new to the area, getting to know us, and perhaps not ready for a focused activity; also an introduction for their children to our programme for Under 5s following the Early Years Foundation Strategy principles, enabling parent and child to share activities together. This was the part of our complete programme which had to close – until we were able to reopen four months later in September, due to successful funding from the People’s Post Code Lottery, Truemark Trust and Madeley Town Council. We are truly grateful to be financially secure for another year, to develop what had become a very popular service with carers and children under 5.Our complete programme is as follows:

Woodside Park Lane Centre Monday 9.15 - 11.15 Open Access Tums & Tinies is a group for pregnant 1pm – 2.30pm Tums & Tinies women and families with babiesSutton Hill Comm. Centre Tuesday 9.30-11am Tums & Tinies until confidently walking. Wed 9.15 – 11.15 Open AccessIf you are an interested parent, grandparent or carer with an Under 5 you are welcome to come and see us at the above times and venues.

Celebrating 50 years of Sutton HillThis year is a big year for Sutton Hill and its local residents because 50 years ago, on March 8th 1966, site preparation works started at Sutton Hill housing estate and on 17th March 1967, HRH Queen Elizabeth II visited Sutton Hill to open the first house on the estate. To help celebrate and mark this jubilee year several events and activities have been arranged, one of which was a beautiful street art mural painted along the side of the youth and community centre in Sutton Hill. This piece of street art was put together with a combination of ideas, memories and suggestions from both young and old residents living in Sutton Hill. Their ideas were then transformed, with the help from a local street artist, into a 50 year timeline of past memories, significant events and features that represent Sutton Hill and it was then painted by a group of young people (and those of young minds), who recreated the images in a visual timeline that spans 50 years of Sutton Hill, that now takes pride of place along the external wall of the youth and community centre.Cllr Paul Watling, cabinet member for children, young people and communities and ward member for Sutton Hill gave huge thanks to the ‘Friends of Sutton Hill’ community group for obtaining funds from the Big Lottery Awards for All programme to fund the work and he was impressed by the joint work that had gone on between both young and older people to come up with a fantastic mural that celebrated life in Sutton Hill.

Sutton Hill Community Centre UpdateThank you to everyone that took part in the survey during the summer. We received nearly 150 returns. We will be considering all the feedback as we plan for the future of the Centre. As part of the consultation we asked whether local people might be interested in getting more involved in running the Centre when Telford & Wrekin Council withdraw in April 2017. A number of people came forward and a new Charity is now being set up, Sutton Hill Community Trust. We are working on a business plan that will be presented to the Council in the coming weeks. Hopefully if we can get the finances to stack up the new charity will take over the Centre in April 2017. As a result there will be a number of new opportunities for local people, including employment, training, work experience and volunteering. If you are interested in getting involved please get in touch. We need lots of volunteers to help with fundraising, putting on events and making the Centre a success.Sutton Hill Partnership meets regularly bringing together representatives from Telford & Wrekin Council, the Diocese of Hereford, local partners, agencies, the Friends of Sutton Hill and residents.Over the next few months we will be working with the University of Wolverhampton School of Architecture and Built Environment to think about future ambitions for the centre of Sutton Hill. Students will be tasked with coming up with ideas and plans for the refurbishment and redevelopment of the community centre and youth club buildings. We have also asked the students to imagine a complete regeneration of the area that might include new shops, housing, church and community buildings. If you have any thoughts or ideas, or would like to get involved in this exciting project to consider the future of Sutton Hill please get in touch with Revd Linda, Fiona or Nadeem at the Community Centre or contact Sam Hine Project Development Manager at [email protected] .

Anstice Memories If you have a good story or anecdote about the Anstice, please write it down in a letter or email and send it to the Town Council. It might be about a dance or play or a favourite band or even a family do. We will publish our favourite submission in the next edition of Madeley Matters and the author will receive a £10 Tesco voucher. We would also love to see any old programmes or photos taken in or around the Anstice. We can take copies and will return the originals. This photo is of an old folks' Christmas party in the Anstice ballroom in the 1920s - such a happy bunch!

Well Done That Man!

Update on the AnsticeFirst the good news… ACT (The Anstice Community Trust) have taken on a Licence to Occupy and are busy scrubbing, cleaning and sorting out the building. They have moved into the old committee room and hope to be there every Wednesday morning. At the moment there is no telephone so please continue to address any enquiries to the Town Council. There are now two regular groups at the Anstice – Line Dancing on Wednesday evenings and the Shropshire Short Mat Bowls Association who meet on a Thursday. And coming up soon, the Jackfield Band with their popular Christmas Concert and of course, the Christmas festivities on 3rd December. If you would like to receive regular email updates with more detail please go to the website www.theanstice.co.uk and fill in the form on the home page, or even better, consider becoming a member of the Trust.

Now the bad news… We knew from the outset that the Anstice would not be without its setbacks and we have encountered a few, but this latest one is a biggie! In the course of servicing the heating system, the engineers found various problems and have had to cut off the gas supply. Hopefully it will just be a matter of weeks before it is fixed, but although we have hired some heaters in the short term, we won’t be able to take any more private bookings for the ballroom until the heating is back on.But to finish on a positive note, local support has been fantastic. Huge thanks to Mark Hinshelwood, KD Smith Carpets, Go Green, Groundwork West Midlands, Ironbridge Rotarians and all the wonderful people out there who have come along and helped at events, organised fundraisers, donated prizes and money and who have given us loads of encouragement.

Alison’s Bee Class – Gets Kids Buzzing About Education!Eighteen months ago Alison Wakeman approached Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School, Sutton Hill to pilot a science-based educational programme she’d written entitled ‘Awareness of Bees and their Importance in the Environment’.

Being passionate about environmental issues as well as educating future generations, combining her background in education and hobby of bee-keeping, it seemed a perfect career move.

The programme which involves 7 hours of class contact time is spread over 3 sessions. The children get a chance to participate in many hands-on activities and learn many aspects about bees, life-cycles, habitats, pollination & plant structures. Alison was very keen to follow many areas of the National Curriculum statutory requirements, so it’s a ‘win-win’ all round.

Her programme has certainly attracted a lot of interest and, to date, she’s delivered to 12 different primary schools with Telford & Wrekin as well as Shropshire LEA and educated well over 1,500 children. She also had the opportunity recently to discuss her work with the Duchess of Cornwall.

Alison manages 20 colonies of honey bees at various locations and is currently preparing the hives for winter, a quieter time in a bee-keeper’s calender.

If you’d like more information, you can contact Alison at: https://www.facebook.com/AlisonsBeeClass/

Traffic CalmingIn June 2016 a 20 m.p.h. zone was introduced in the newer part of Madeley Centre along Park Avenue.

This, and the zebra crossing opposite the Anstice, resulted from initiatives by Madeley Town Council and Madeley Partnership, in response to concerns expressed by residents about speeding traffic and difficulties in crossing the newer roads.

We would very much like to hear your thoughts on these initiatives – please contact the Town Council, details on the back page, to let us know what you think.

Recycling Centre Service Changes to Telford and Wrekin’s household recycling centres started on Monday 3 October 2016 giving residents an improved seven day a week service. The revamp has seen a brand new recycling centre open at Hortonwood (TF1 7GL) serving the north of the borough and one at Halesfield (TF7 4LN) serving the south. Both centres have improved access and walkways to make accessibility easier and are open 9am to 5pm seven days a week, 362 days a year. The old Ketley and Granville sites are now closed. The changes will mean that the borough’s household recycling centres are open for 770 hours extra a year and also remove the uncertainty of whether a site is open or not on a given day.All you need to know about recycling and rubbish collections plus advice on what goes in your bins can be found by visiting: http://www.telford.gov.uk/recycling
