Dear Colleague:Created by Drs. Colin Woolf and Yvonne de Buda in 1987,Saturday @ The University is still growing steadily, providingexcellent speakers who deliver practical, relevant, evidencebased CME. We attract a multidisciplinary group of generalpractitioners, family physicians, general internists and nursepractitioners from all over Ontario, all learning together howto better provide exceptional care in practice.

We have invited back some of our most highly rated speakerswho have spoken several times in the past at Saturday at theUniversity. We will continue with our format of excellent speakers, and allowing equal time for questions and answers to helpmaintain our high level of CME.

The goal of the Planning Committee is to work continuouslyto provide you with knowledge that is transferable into youreveryday practice. If there is a topic you would like to explore, please let us know about it. We appreciate your involvementin planning and hope that you'll find this year's program thebest so far. We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

John Axler, MD,CCFPCourse Director

FormatFirst, as in past years, we continue to adhere closely to thesuccessful format of fixed, 10-minute lecture blocks, followedby a question-and-answer period of similar length.

To enhance these lectures, we always ask our presenters tofocus on family practice or primary care problems, using casesor problems that audience members will find relevant to theirpractices. Also building on what registrants have indicated asa successful addition to the course, our syllabus is an extensivereminder and reinforcer of learning. Registrants are providedwith a set of dividers, which will assist in the storage and retrievalof past speakers’ notes.

A successful innovation begun ten years ago, registrants maychoose to take a multiple-choice examination based on theeducational and clinical content of the previous month.

Focus GroupsFocus groups help plan activities for the year, assist in programevaluation, and make suggestions for the continuing improve-ment of the course. Focus group participants generally makea commitment to attend most, though not all, of the sessionsthroughout the year, and participate in an informal and relaxedatmosphere with course planners through the lunch hour. Wewill attempt to select focus group members to represent theconstituencies of our audience: GPs, FPs, Nurse Practitioners andothers.

If you wish to serve on a focus group this year, please check theappropriate box on the registration form.

On-line RegistrationRegistration for Saturday at the University is available online at:www.cme.utoronto.ca. Click on “Looking for an Event” and enter“Saturday at the University”.

The GACWith funding from the Ministry of Health and the OMA, theGuidelines Advisory Committee of Ontario reviews, rates andsynopsizes guidelines for clinical use - especially helpful for busyfamily docs and other generalists. To help disseminate theseguidelines GAC staff work hard to:• ensure that relevant GAC guideline summaries are available

at each Saturday at the University session;• help presenters keep their presentations focused on the

endorsed, summarized guideline; and• maintain an active and very helpful website at

www.gacguidelines.ca

ObjectivesBy participating in this series, registrants will be able to:1. acquire knowledge of new investigations, management

strategies and therapies2. maintain and enhance their competence in a wide variety

of family and general practice subjects3. develop practical office-based screening and disease

prevention strategies

ModeratorsThe question-and-answer sessions are handled by family physicianmoderators, who accept and review written questions from theaudience and present them to the speakers in a synopsis thatexpedites this highly important, but informal and practical, aspectof the program.

This year’s moderators include:Dr. John AxlerDr. Milena ForteDr. Barnett GiblonDr. Naznin LalaniDr. Jonathan MarcusDr. Nick Mooreand other members of the Faculty of Medicine.

AccreditationThis program meets the accreditation criteria of The College ofFamily Physicians of Canada and has been accredited for upto 33 Mainpro-M1 credits (5.5 credits per day).
