Maths

• There are three parts to the maths assessment

• Paper 1 takes 30 minutes and the children answer a range of arithmetic questions covering calculation, fractions, decimals and percentages. This test is out of 40 marks. The majority of the questions are worth 1 mark with long multiplication and long division worth 2 marks.

Maths

• Papers 2 & 3 take 40 minutes each and are focussed on reasoning and problem solving. These papers will cover all areas of the maths curriculum. Each of these papers are out of 35.

• There are 110 marks available across the 3 papers. • This is then converted in to a scaled score of between 80 and

120. • A scaled score of 100 or above means your child has reached the

expected standard for the end of Key Stage 2.

English tests• Reading Paper

– Children have 60 minutes to read 3 texts and answer a range of questions based on vocabulary, retrieval and inference.

– The texts may be fiction, non-fiction or poetry.

– The paper is out of 50 marks. – As with maths, the children will receive a score out of 50

which will be converted to a scaled score of between 80 and 120.

English tests• Grammar Test

– The grammar paper consists of a grammar paper of 50 questions, each worth one mark, and a spelling paper containing 20 spellings.

– These scores are combined to give a score out of 70 and then converted to a scale score of between 80 and 120.

– The grammar paper contains a range of question types including multiple choice, ticking boxes, writing sentences and underlining words or phrases.

– Handwriting, spelling and punctuation are all important in the grammar test.

Writing

• Children’s writing assessment is based on the independent work they have produced throughout the year and is assessed by the class teacher.

• 25% of schools have their writing moderated each year. This is where school’s have their writing assessed by the local authority to check accurate judgements have been made.

How can you help your child revise for SATs?

• Listen to your child read regularly and question them about what they have read.

• Help children to revise text types and be aware of the different features.

• Encourage your children to practice reading a section of text in a short time with you questioning their understanding afterwards.

• Early night and good breakfast on the morning of the tests

• Please ensure that your child has their water bottle in school

• Make sure your child is in school and on time.

• No appointments during school time.

• We will be using the 2018 KS2 paper in a few weeks to gauge any areas that still need work so we ask that you don’t look at that paper with your children.

• Assessment Week will take place week commencing 25th

February
