Satish K. Tripathi Satish K. Tripathi is an Indian-American computer sci- entist from Buffalo, NY, and is the president of the University at Buffalo (UB), part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. [1][2] He was selected by the SUNY Board of Trustees with backing from SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, [2][3] and assumed this po- sition on April 18, 2011, after leaving his position as provost of the University of Buffalo. [1][4] Tripathi grew up in India and came to the United States in 1978. [2] He spent many years as a faculty member at the University of Maryland and the University of Califor- nia, Riverside. [2] He was UB Provost from 2004 to 2011, during which time he secured important partnerships in India. [2] He is recognized as an expert computer scientist and has published more than 200 papers. [5] As a child, he was interested in the field of education; [5] and his father was a high school principal. [5] In the Winter 2014 edition of At Buffalo, Tripathi states in an article included in the pub- lication: ...I never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to lead a major American research university like UB. My early ambitions were more modest: I hoped, through hard work and perseverance, that I might one day become a high school prin- cipal like my father. I would have taken great pride in that achieve- ment, but I am very proud of where this path ultimately has taken me. [5] 1.2 Education Tripathi graduated at the head of his class in 1968 from Banaras Hindu University in India, [2] receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in statistics. [1][5] He also holds mas- ter’s and doctoral degrees (1979) [1] in computer science that he earned from the University of Toronto, [2][5] and a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Al- berta in 1974. [1][2][5][6] 2 Early career 2.1 Work in India In Calcutta, after graduating from Banaras Hindu Univer- sity, Tripathi gained experience in working with comput- ers at the Indian Statistical Institute. [5] He also worked at the Electronics Corporation of India Limited in systems programming prior to moving to Canada to further his education. [5] 3 Later career 3.1 At the University of Maryland Tripathi came to the United States in 1978. [5] He was a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, where he served 19 years as a faculty member, [1][2][5] including as chair for seven years from 1988 to 1995. [1][5] While at the University of Maryland, Tripathi was also a visiting professor at the University of Paris-Sud in France and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany.     grew signicantly[1][2] with its most academically tal-ented freshman class being enrolled there since 2008.[2]

    Tripathi also signed a memorandum of understanding in2005 with Indian PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh to es-tablish the Indo-US Inter-University Collaborative Initia-tive in Higher Education and Research.[1][2][7] The Initia-tive is aimed at increasing educational access to peoplein India.[7] The Initiative partners India with UB, as wellas four additional universities, including the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley, the University of California at SanDiego, Carnegie Mellon University, and Cornell Univer-sity.[7] QUALCOMM Inc., Microsoft Corporation, andCadence Design Systems, Inc. have partnered in the Ini-tiative to provide funding for the program.[7]

    Regarding the creation of the CollaborativeInitiative between the United States and India,Tripathi is quoted in an article written by EllenGoldbaum that appeared in the University atBualo on July 28, 2005, stating:

    UB is partnering with a distin-guished group of Indian and U.S.institutions and companies incombining faculty expertise anddistance-learning technologiesto expand access to higher andtechnical education throughoutIndia.[7]

    In 2011, Tripathi was named President of UB.[2][5] Atthe time he left his position as Provost, he was overseeingBuilding UB, the institutions physical plan that includedthe construction of several new buildings. John KapoorHall, Barbara and Jack Davis Hall, and William R.Greiner Hall were all constructed under Building UB.[8]

    3.3.2 As University at Bualo President

    As president, he is a signicant promoter of the economicstimulus plan, UB 2020,[1][9] and also serves as an hon-orary member of AtTheBull.In 2012-2013, Tripathi was the highest paid SUNY presi-dent, earning more than $681,000 during that year.[10][11]

    4 Professional outlookEducation is important to Tripathi, a value that his familytaught him from an early age.[5]

    Tripathi stated in the Winter 2014 editionofAt Bualo, regarding his views on education:

    From a very early age, my familytaught me that, through education,

    one cannot only change ones per-sonal destiny, but also change theworld for the better.[5]

    5 Civic and professional involve-ments

    In 2011, Tripathi was named by New York State Gover-nor Andrew Cuomo as co-chair of theWestern NewYorkRegional Economic Development Council[12] He is alsoa member of the Board of Directors of the Bualo Ur-ban League.[1][2] Further, Tripathi is a fellow of both theInstitute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)and the American Association for the Advancement ofScience.[1][2]

    6 Personal lifeTripathi is a resident of Amherst, New York. He andhis wife, Kamlesh,[5] have two adult sons, Manish andAashish.[5]
