The Satellite Design Project (SDP)

I What is the Satellite DesignProject

What is the project

I A largely student run Design Project tasked with the PreliminaryDesign of a Space Vehicle.

I Several of the Lead Engineers have significant related IndustrialExperience; the project runs much as it would in industry.

I In past years we have attracted a great deal of interest from industry,both in the satellite manufacturing sector and the user community.

I Several of our “alumni” have found employment in the space industry,sometimes as a direct result of the PDR presentations.

Previous Projects

I Over the past several years, we have worked projects, including:I AEGIS was targeted at the Boreal Forest region of Canada (and by

extension the World).I NORSAT was a Northern Canada sovereignty and surveillance mission

suggested by DRCD at Shirley Bay.I The AEGIS used a single satellite, while NORSAT utilized a

constellation of twelve satellites.I Culprit was a Lunar Penetrator system, targeted at the Lunar South

Pole in search of subsurface water.I SISS was a satellite constellation designed to take visible spectrum

stereo images of EarthI EODM is a satellite designed to remove “Space Debris” from Low

Earth Orbit

I A miniaturizedsatellite: volume ofexactly one liter (10cm cube), mass ofless than 1.33kilograms

Project Schedule

I First year - Conceptual design tradeoff (mission, bus, payload)

I Second year - Detailed design

I Third year - Prototype manufacturing, assembly with COTScomponents and preliminary testing in a lab environment

I Fourth year - Assembly with rad hard components and final assembly,integration and testing
