Quarter 4 Prayer Guide and Bible Reading Plan

– Samuel Chadwick –

Satan laughs at our toil,

mocks at our wisdom,

but trembles when we

pray.

FINISHING STRONG IN THE

YEAR OF PRAYER

Prayer is essential for every Christian. Matthew Henry

said, “You may as soon find a living man who does not

breathe, as a living Christian who does not pray.” Prayer

isn’t just important for times of trouble and need: It’s

for every season and every circumstance.

Luke 5:16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and

prayed.

Jesus understood the necessity of prayer. At every turn,

you find the Son of God reaching out to his Father in

prayer. When the crowds flocked to him, eager to hear

him and anxious for his healing touch, he withdrew and

prayed. And as the hour of his death approached, and

the crowds abandoned Him, he withdrew and prayed.

In every season, Jesus relied on his connection to the

heavenly Father. So, why on earth would we feel or act

as if prayer were less necessary for us?

Prayer fuels our life in Christ. Prayer feeds our faith.

Our confidence in God and his greatness, his mercy,

his goodness, and his commitment to help us is stirred

when we spend time with him in prayer. We will never

learn to stand firm in our faith until we have learned to

be ever on our knees.

YEAR OF PRAYER: ACTS

Isaiah 29:13

The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and hon-

or me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”

God is more interested in our hearts than he is in our words. That’s one

reason we have chosen ACTS as a way to direct both our hearts and our

words. ACTS is not a formula for praying but rather a guide to lead our

hearts to the heart of God.

Adoration focuses our hearts on the wonder of who God is. As we ap-

proach his throne, our hearts need to be reminded of his greatness.

Speaking his praise can fill our hearts with awe and wonder in the pres-

ence of our magnificent God.

Confession turns our hearts on the wonder of his grace. Every sin con-

fessed is met by his promised forgiveness and cleansing. Each acknowl-

edgement or our sin is met by the cleansing power of his blood. And our

hearts marvel at his great grace.

Thanksgiving directs our hearts toward the abundance of his goodness

to us. As we begin to acknowledge and call out God’s kindness to us, we

see his faithful care for us. And our hearts are humbled by the reality that

his mercy and goodness are always pursuing us.

Supplication opens our hearts to his heart of compassion and his match-

less power for every need. He not only listens when we cry out to him,

but he is able to do more than we could even imagine. Every request

becomes an opportunity for trust to grow. And at the throne of grace,

our hearts find hope and confidence, knowing that by the death of his

Son, God opened the way for us to come boldly before him and ask. And

because his thoughts and his ways are higher than ours, every request

becomes an opportunity for us to embrace his purposes and his plans. At

the throne of grace, our hearts find hope and confidence knowing that

the One who sacrificed his only Son for our redemption will surely fulfill

all he has promised to us.

HOW TO PRAY THROUGH SCRIPTURE

Below is a sample of how you might read through, meditate on, and respond

to a passage through prayer. Consider that Scripture is God’s way of starting

the conversation, and our prayers are one way we respond to what he says. As

you read, think through the ACTS acronym. Not every passage will lend itself

to all four components of prayer. Read slowly. Ask God to guide you. Take note

of things that capture your attention. Be sensitive to other verses that the Holy

Spirit may bring to mind as you are reading and meditating. Remember, as you

turn from reading to praying, you are embarking on a holy dialogue between you

and your loving Father.

Deuteronomy 3:23-25

At that time I pleaded with the

Lord: “Sovereign Lord, you have

begun to show to your servant

your greatness and your strong

hand. For what god is there in

heaven or on earth who can do the

deeds and mighty works you do?

Let me go over and see the good

land beyond the Jordan—that fine

hill country and Lebanon.”

Page 7: Satan laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but ... · Satan laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we. pray. FINISHING STRONG IN THE . YEAR OF PRAYER. Prayer

AdorationSovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness and your strong hand.

Our God is the sovereign God, supreme ruler over all. He has no rivals, no equals. And this God has con-

descended to make himself known to us. He has taken the initiative to reveal himself to us.

Prayer: Oh God, my words aren’t adequate to describe your greatness. You not only created us but you

sovereignly rule over every detail of our lives. Your power and greatness are evident in creation and in the

redemption that you worked for us on the cross. Oh Lord, my God, I stand in awe of you.

Confession Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness and your strong hand.

Though he has shown himself to me, I often act as if he is not who he says he is. I respond as if others are

sovereign, as if his power and greatness are not sufficient.

Prayer: God, I confess that I often forget who you are and what you have done. I give in to worry and stress

and fear and anxiety. God, forgive me for failing to trust in your sovereign care for me. Forgive me for dis-

counting the great power that is at work in me.

Thanksgiving For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works you do?

No deeds compare to his. And we are the benefactors of his mighty acts.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for all your kindness and goodness poured out on me. Truly every good and per-

fect gift is from you. Thank you for rescuing me. Thank you for keeping me and sustaining me. Thank you

that what you started in me you have promised to carry on to completion.

Supplication Let me go over and see the good land beyond the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon.

Moses wanted more than just to walk on the soil and see the good land God had promised to give his

children. Moses wanted to experience more of the greatness of God and his strong hand at work for his

people.

Prayer: Lord, I pray that you would continue to reveal yourself to me as you show me your greatness and

your power. I long to see you continue to work in my behalf and on behalf of your church. Open my eyes

to see you at work. I’m asking you save my children and my neighbors and let me see it. Oh God, would

you allow us at the Summit to continue to see you do the work of redemption and reconciliation in our city

and around the world?

GLOBAL HUNGER AND THE PERSECUTED CHURCH

Most of us never have to worry about where out next meal is coming from or whether or not we will

be persecuted for our faith. But that is not the realty of many around the world. Let’s pray together

that God would supply food for the hungry, that he would raise up the persecuted church in bold-

ness and courage, and that he would bring down unjust rulers.

“...THAT HE MIGHT COME TO HAVE FIRST PLACE IN EVERYTHING.”

COLOSSIANS 1:18

FIRST will be a two-year journey in which we approach God with one question: “What would it look

like to really follow the Holy Spirit by putting Jesus first in our lives?” Pray fervently that we would

go first in surrendering all that we have to God and that he would be preeminent in all areas of our

life. As we put God first, pray that our efforts to reach people and make disciple-making-disciples

would be fruitful.

MISSIONS, PEOPLE SERVING INTERNATIONALLY,

UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPS, OUR ENGAGEMENT (PRAY, GIVE, GO)

This is the season of Christmas. A time that we celebrate the coming of Christ to earth. His coming re-

minders us that we are called to go, go and tell. So this month we focus our prayer the great commission.

We want to pray that God would use us to carry the gospel to unreached peoples around the world. Ask

god to raise up more who are willing to go. Pray that God would help you to surrender yourself fully and

completely to him. Pray that as a church we would be all in for the mission of God.
