EndorsementMessage on behalf of Sasol
Sasol is bringing Sasol Techno X 2018 from 13 – 17 August 2018 to the Boiketlong Sport Centre, Eric
Louw Road in Sasolburg with the theme “Dream. Explore. Become”.
Regarded as the largest career guidance exhibition of its kind in South Africa, Sasol Techno X is a
career guidance exhibition that attracts learners from seven South African provinces. The flagship
exhibition seeks to stimulate interest in the technological application of science and mathematics
among learners, teachers and the general public. This is done by giving visitors the opportunity
to see and experience the numerous opportunities mathematics, science and technology hold,
through exhibitions and workshops by industry, government and non-government organisations
as well as tertiary academic institutions.
Learners will be exposed to what is possible through access to information on new and evolving
careers within STEM-related fields, career guidance, and bursary opportunities from different
institutions. Learners will also get to directly engage with academic institutions to get better
insights on the fields of study they would like to pursue.
Sasol has been sponsoring Sasol Techno X for 17 years – an event that has over the years grown in
popularity to become the largest career guidance exhibition of its kind where more than 451 000
people have visited Sasol Techno X since 2001.

Sasol overview Sasol is an international integrated chemicals and energy company that leverages technologies and the expertise of our 30 300 people working in 33 countries. We develop and commercialise technologies, and build and operate world-scale facilities to produce a range of high-value product stream, including liquid fuels, chemicals and low-carbon electricity.
Sasol’s new value chain-based operating model came into effect in 2014. Towards this end, the Sasol Group is now organised into two upstream business units, three regional operating hubs, and four customer-facing strategic business units, supported by fit-for-purpose functions as reflected in our new Sasol website.
By combining the talent of our people and our technological advantage, Sasol has been a pioneer in innovation for over six decades. As market needs and stakeholder expectations have changed, so too have our methods, facilities and products, driving progress to deliver long-term shareholder value sustainably. The growth and enhancement of our foundation businesses in Southern Africa is complemented by the significant chapter of growth, Sasol has entered in its history.
At Sasol, we recognise the growing need for countries to secure supply of energy and chemicals. For many countries, specifically those with abundant hydrocarbons, in-country conversion of these resources into liquid fuels and chemicals goes a long way to boost national economies.
Sasol’s focused and strong project pipeline means we are actively capitalising on the growth opportunities that play to our strengths in Southern Africa and North America. Our focus is creating value sustainably and we are proud to be taking this company, to new frontiers.
Sasol was established in 1950 in South Africa and we remain one of the country’s largest investors in capital projects, skills development and technological research and development. The company is listed on the JSE in South Africa and on the New York Stock Exchange in the United States.
Visitors to Sasol Techno X 2018 will have the opportunity to experience the Sasol value chain through a variety of exciting exhibitions, see how Sasol products touch lives every day and learn more about careers and opportunities available in the Group. Schools are invited to book now to ensure learners don’t miss out on this career experience of a lifetime.

Crisp print Printing ink contains n-Propanol as well as special waxes, manufactured by Sasol.
It’s in the fabricCotton fibres are treated with wax from Sasol to allow for smooth running in weaving machines. Acrylic fibre, which is made from a combination of propylene and ammonia, is used to manufacture blankets, knitted garments and carpets.
Cleaning upCaustic soda produced by Sasol is used in water treatment – important in a world where, according to the World Water Council, one in six people lack access to safe drinking water.
Flying highSasol markets and supplies Jet A-1 fuel to commercial airline businesses at the OR Tambo International Airport. Sasol has also produced the world’s first fully synthetic jet fuel.
In the fast laneMany plastic components in cars are manufactured from polypropylene produced by Sasol. The polyethyl benzene in automotive paint and on road surfaces also comes from Sasol. Plasticiser alcohol is used for dashboards.
Amazing aluminaAlumina materials occur in almost all aspects of modern life without ever being noticed. Via a unique process, Sasol manufactures synthetic aluminas of the highest quality. They find their way into technically
demanding applications like catalysts of all kinds, bioceramics, synthetic sapphires for lasers and modern light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, high performance abrasives as well as coatings and polymer additives. A white powder for a colourful basket of
applications!
All that glittersSodium cyanide solution, a chemical product from Sasol, is used extensively in the process of extracting gold from ore. Particularly useful when grade of ore is low – it ensures that every fraction of an
ounce of gold in the ore can be recovered. This is vital when one considers that only five grams of gold is recovered from every ton of ore mined.
Application of our productsOur products are used in the production process of numerous everyday products made worldwide and benefit the lives of millions of people around the world. They include hot-melt adhesives, car products, microchip coatings, printing inks, household and industrial paints, mobile phone circuit boards, transport fuels, compact discs, medical lasers, sun creams, perfumes and plastic bottles to name a few.
Going green...Ammonium sulphate and lime ammonium nitrate are only a few of the liquid and granular fertilisers produced by Sasol, providing nutrients for crops and pastures.
...with a bangAmmonium nitrate is also used as the oxidising medium in explosives.

Light up your lifeNot being able to see in the dark is not to be taken lightly. Sasol lights up our lives with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) derived from the Sasol coal- and gas-to-liquids processes. LPGs are used for
camp lights and stoves (propane) and lighters (butane). The candles that light up a romantic dinner are produced from Sasol wax.
Shoe and floor polishVarious Sasol waxes are used in both
shoe and floor polish.

preventing dangerous cross-contamination and bacterial spread. Go anywhere in a hospital and you will see plastic products from Sasol at work. Polypropylene is used in disposable bed linen, operating theatre gowns for doctors and nurses and face masks.
Pretty and pain freeGot a pounding headache? Been told by your doctor to watch your heart? Help is as close as your medicine cabinet. With an estimated 40 000 tons being consumed annually, aspirin is one
of the most widely used medications for minor aches and pains as well as a preventative measure against heart attacks. It contains phenol, which is derived from coal or crude oil and is supplied by
Nail polish removerSasol produces acetone which is the main solvent used in nail polish remover.
Baby nappiesThe soft lining in babies’ nappies is made from very fine fibres produced from polypropylene.
Soft as a baby’s skinPetroleum jelly, a Sasol product, is widely used as an ingredient in skin lotions and cosmetics. It is effective in accelerating wound healing by keeping the injured area supple and forming a barrier which prevents the skin’s natural moisture from evaporating.
Making a meal of itYou couldn’t start your day without your favourite cereal. Sasol helps by ensuring that the box is properly sealed with our hard wax.
Flavours to savourWhether you enjoy a strawberry sweet, tuck into pineapple jelly, love peach juice or slowly savour a bowl of cherry ice cream, these probably contain chemicals called esters. Esters, which are produced by Sasol, are used extensively in the food industry as flavourants. They have a characteristic pleasant, fruity odour that is very similar to those in nature. Benzyl acetate smells like strawberries or jasmine and ethyl heptanoate smells like apricot, cherry or raspberry.
