The Sasebo Burger

This gourmet dish which represents Sasebo is said to have originated in about 1950 when the US Navy, which was stationed

in Sasebo, shared the recipe with the local people. The burger was arranged Sasebo-style so that Japanese people would

like it. The dish is made after an order is placed. Therefore, you can enjoy each restaurant's own unique burger.

Sailor's Beef Stew

This beef stew is said to have been introduced to Japan by Heihachiro Togo, who served as commander-in-chief of Sasebo

Naval District when the Imperial Japanese Navy was in power. Togo encountered the stew when he was studying in Britain.

The stew was developed after different restaurants came up with their own recipe based on the recipe that was in

"KaigunKappojutsuSankosho," a cook book for the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Saruku City 4〇3 Arcade

This kilometer-long, shopping arcade continues across the seven towns of Yonka-cho and Sanka-cho. It is the longest

straight and continuous shopping arcade in Japan. A variety of events are held in the shopping arcade throughout the year,

and the arcade is always crowded with shoppers. Some stores accept US dollars.

This market has been adored by the locals as a public kitchen since the Taisho period, and a variety of stores stand side by

Yumiharidake Observatory

This observation spot is located at the top of Mt. Yumiharidake and provides a panoramic view of the townscapes of Sasebo

City and the Kujukushima Islands. You can enjoy the scenery during the day as well as at night. The night view especially

brings out the distinct character of the port city. The two observatories have a universal design, allowing people in wheel

chairs to enjoy the view as well.

This is a memorial festival for "hamazen," which is a stand that is used when making pottery. The festival is held annually in
