Time to Rethink the Book

The publishing industry is actually struggling with what to call

today’s “book.” At issue is how to refer to content available in

multiple file formats on a myriad of devices with enhancements like

audio, video, and links. Buzzwords abound! SAS has opted to stick

with “book,” but it’s time to expand the definition.

The book has moved beyond its binding to include bytes. The book

is still portable, but you can now carry an entire SAS library on your

iPad. The book still contains illustrations, but now the illustrations

move. The book still contains a Table of Contents, but now the

entries in the Table of Contents link directly to the information you’re

looking for.

The book is evolving, and we’re delighted to bring you SAS books

in a variety of formats to assist you in making the most of your

investment with SAS.

The real value of a book from SAS continues to be its content.

Examples include the new SAS® Press titles from Art Carpenter,

Tricia Aanderud and Angela Hall, Robert Allison, Gerhard Svolba,

and others. Also, check out the titles from the SAS documentation.

They’re all highlighted in the following pages.

To celebrate the “book,” we’ve made a few changes. You might

have noticed that this catalog is now referred to as “SAS Books.”

We’ve also changed the name of our monthly newsletter to SAS

Book Report. Small changes, to be sure, but they underscore the

simplicity and common understanding of that long-respected (and

ever-evolving) source of information!

Enjoy browsing the latest books from SAS and refer to our Web site

(support.sas.com/bookstore) for all the newest titles.

All the best,

Generalized Linear and Nonlinear Models for Correlated DataTheory and Applications Using SAS®

Edward F. Vonesh

SAS® Press This book is intended to provide applied statisti-cians with the necessary theory, tools, and understanding to conduct analyses of continuous or discrete correlated data in a longitudinal or clustered data setting. It focuses on applications where the underlying model requires a nonlinear rather than linear formulation, and it compares and contrasts the various estimation techniques for both marginal and mixed-effects models. The SAS procedures MIXED, GENMOD, GLIMMIX,

and NLMIXED, as well as user-specified macros, are used extensively in these applications. Vonesh offers useful programming tips throughout that will help users navigate their way around these advanced procedures. The examples include detailed software code so readers can begin applying the various techniques immediately. The book presents several approaches to the modeling of missing data, including a discussion of selection models, shared-parameter models, and pattern-mixture models.

EncodingUnderstanding the Details

Manfred Kiefer

Understanding the basic concepts of character encoding is necessary for creating, manipulating, and rendering any type of character data. An encoding is involved whenever data is brought into SAS from various external sources; whenever data is transferred between SAS applications running different locales or across the network via thin cli-ents; and when output is written to external files, SAS data sets, printers, or Web pages. Manfred Kiefer’s SAS® Encoding: Understanding the Details

explains the basic concepts of characters, encodings, glyphs, and fonts and gives practical examples of how to troubleshoot encoding problems.

Addressed to the beginner as well as to the advanced SAS user, this book provides background information about encodings, shows how they are used with SAS software, and explains typical problems and ways to sort those out. It also presents examples of how to set up SAS software in an international environment. e

Now in a second edition, Roger Hoerl and Ron Snee’s Statistical Thinking: Improving Business Performance prepares you for business leadership by developing your capacity to apply statistical thinking to improve business processes. The authors clearly illustrate how to implement statistical thinking and methodology in your work to enhance business performance. Introducing statistical engineering, a discipline that helps you utilize multiple statistical tools in a logical way to drive greater impact, this new edition now

emphasizes JMP® software as the main tool to develop graphics and perform statistical analyses. It explores basic graphical tools, knowledge-based tools, as well as process stability and capability; discusses the tools in a logical sequence, the sequence in which they are typically applied in practice; adds tools, such as failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and the cause and effect (C&E) matrix, as well as further guidance on how the tools are naturally linked and sequenced; and looks at the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control (DMAIC) framework made popular through the Lean Six Sigma initiative.

Statistical Thinking focuses on skills to enrich business processes, including collecting data appropriate for a specified purpose, recognizing limitations in existing data, and understanding the limitations of statistical analyses.

Foreword by TOM DAVENPORT

Learn how to approach creating and evolving a world-class advanced analytics ecosystem in today’s big data environment! Written in an informal style by someone who has lived analytics in big business, Taming the Big Data Tidal Wave: Finding Opportunities in Huge Data Streams with Advanced Analytics, by Bill Franks, provides a “from the trenches” viewpoint of analytics. This book shows how big data is changing the world of analytics; what people, processes, technologies, and mindsets are

necessary to succeed in analytics in this new era; what trends are developing that will change how businesses do analytics as big data alters the scale of the inputs and growing requirements change the scale of the outputs; and how to think bigger in terms of what analytics can do for a business.

This important book reveals how analytics has evolved in the past decades and how it will continue to evolve in the coming decades. The big data tidal wave is coming. Organizations can either ride the wave to drive analytical innovation and improve their businesses, or they can get dragged under it as it crashes on top of them. Bill Franks provides a roadmap for riding the wave successfully in terms that anyone with an interest in the topic will be able to understand.
