PERFECT
In the most fascinating style collaboration
of the year, X Factor star Dannii Minogue
has teamed up with designer and best mate
Tabitha Somerset-Webb to launch Project D,
a collection of chic day and evening dresses.
Here, Tabitha gives Style Birmingham editor
Sarah Drew Jones her take on fashion,
friendship and future plans
PROJECT
Issue Twenty 21
Why shop yourself when you can employ the services
of an expert? John-Paul McGuirk heads up the newly-
launched Harvey Nichols Private Shopping Service which
offers a ‘concierge’ style approach: meeting clients in the
private suite, after store hours, or even in their homes
or offices, and helping with everything from the perfect
LBD to last-minute alterations. John-Paul will even keep
track of anniversaries and birthdays, and organise theatre
tickets or restaurant bookings. Looks like we’ve got
ourselves a new BFF...
NEW, NEW, NEW We’re used to Hobbs showcasing classic lines and
perfect camel coats every autumn, but this season
the label’s thrown a curveball with the eclectic and
really rather cutting-edge NW3 capsule collection.
With a nod to Burberry and Stella McCartney, the
new range is quintessentially English, with sharp
tailoring, cute trenches, sleek tuxes and military de-
tailing, all wrapped in fine fabrics and uber-sophis-
ticated shades of mulberry, navy and forest-green.
We most definitely like. Holly mac, £199, Scotty
shirt, £85, herringbone trousers, £110. Find NW3 at
Hobbs in Pavilions now.

EXPERT STYLE
Running a business is always hard, no matter
what the product. The glamorous fun part is the
designing, but otherwise the same set of challenges
always arise – whether it be production problems,
cash flow or ash clouds affecting travel plans, but
solving the problems is part of the enjoyment. I’m
lucky because I love the business side of things
as much as the design, so none of it bores me.
We are both so excited by the response
to the collection. It really is like a dream come
true to us, and we only hope that we don’t
disappoint in the future! It’s like girly heaven: we
get to do what we love the most - just wait until
either of us actually sees someone on the street
wearing one of our dresses, we’ll probably rugby
tackle them to the ground with excitement!
There are some celebs we’d just love to
see wearing our dresses. Dannii’s dream is
Michelle Obama and Heidi Klum. Mine is Kate
Hudson who I adore, and I would love Claudia
Schiffer to wear one on the school run!
My own favourite piece in the collection is the
zebra Jackpot – I love the print, and the cowl neck
and draped skirt are forgiving and sexy. You can
dress it up or down depending on your mood.
I have a few style icons. I love the casual style of
Jennifer Aniston, she always looks so effortlessly
chic, and I envy her bottom! And I also really admire
Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks – she embraces
and flaunts her curves, and always looks fabulously
sexy with it. She really knows her body, and dresses
to her advantage. As far as the ‘I wish I was as
cool as you’ factor, it would have to be Gwen
Stefani who just rocks every look she puts on.
My own personal style is quite casual, and I
love to layer things up. I will often add a pair of killer
heels or a leather jacket to give a rock ‘n’ roll edge to
what I am wearing. Belts and accessories can make
anything look cool. My worst fashion faux pas has
to be the black polyester dress I made my mother
buy me from Dorothy Perkins for my first ever ball
when I was 14. I have never quite recovered...
I love to shop. I can often be found browsing in
Harvey Nichols and Selfridges to scout out the
latest designer wear, and Gap is great for the staple
everyday pieces. I love the prints that are everywhere
this season, and we have brought these through in
our collection in the zebra and pebble prints. I would
also love to add a pair of Guiseppe Zanotti heels to
my wardrobe, and a cool leather jacket from Vince.
she has become considered a real icon in the fashion
world, so of course we like to inject a bit of Minogue
glamour into everything we do! We didn’t have a
muse or particular type of woman in mind when
designing. The great thing about me and Dannii is
that we are both totally different body shapes, with
very different styles. So together we create a fusion
of urban glamour which is exciting and different,
and we know what flatters our own shapes. We are
each other’s muse, and always know what the other
one would love to wear, and what would suit them.
Dannii is half of the creative team and we need
each other to make it work. She has access to haute
couture clothing I can only dream of, and this in itself
is constantly driving her creative juices. We both
bring in our favourite items for inspiration, and Dannii
will often just send me vintage pieces out of the blue
for inspiration – I love her spontaneity in that way.
But we already both know how the other one thinks!
When it comes to working together it’s so far so
good! When you start working with a close friend,
you never know how it is going to pan out, and if you
will complement each other: we both knew it was a
massive risk. But we are very different people and
that works in our favour, plus we have the utmost
respect for one another. I push Dannii’s boundaries
creatively and make her try things she wouldn’t
normally do, and she pushes me on the detail,
and on making me believe anything is possible.
But we can both be very firm in our opinions. The
great thing is that when things get really tough,
we both just sit down and giggle together.
The time was right for Project D this year.
Dannii and I have been friends for years, and from
the time we first met we had always said we would
love to do something together, but it had just
never been the right time. When she suggested
a fashion project to me just before Christmas
last year, we both instinctively knew that for both
of us the time was right. Dannii is very good like
that, she just knows when things feel right.
Though I’m known as a designer of handbags,
I’ve always wanted to move into fashion, and had
been about to launch a fashion side of my own
label, when Dannii and I began talking about doing
something together. Dannii can be very persuasive!
The inspiration behind Project D is that
Dannii and I both adore fashion, and we wanted
the opportunity to share our passion with other
women. Our aim is to produce sexy, classic,
flattering clothes that women can wear from day
to night, which is what we hope our first capsule
collection does. We hope that there will be a
dress to suit every age and shape out there.
The collection is very chic, classic and well-
tailored. We always have in mind that we want
women to feel sexy and confident in our clothes,
and we want our clothes to flatter. We try to keep
the skirts knee-length, or cover the arms, so that
the clothes are not too revealing. We both love
tailoring, so this and the small details which are
easy to overlook, are our most important criteria.
Obviously people really admire Dannii’s style, and
This season feels edgier and more gothic glamour
to me, so it’s a good time to mix pieces up and
have fun with your clothes. And don’t forget your
studded Tabitha Stardust – the bag of the season!
What’s next for Project D? Dannii and I both
want the business to grow organically. We don’t
want to grow too quickly – we want to establish
a brand that people recognise and love, and then
once we have that, we feel we can go anywhere
with it, and hopefully develop it into a full lifestyle
brand. Our perfume, Project D by Dannii and
Tabitha, launches in Harvey Nichols in September,
and our spring/summer 2011 collection is already
double the size autumn/winter 2010 was. We are,
of course looking at other products and other
territories too, and dream of our penthouse office
overlooking the sea in Melbourne in 10 years’
time… everybody has to have a dream! Can we
expect a babywear range now that little Ethan’s
arrived? Well, I’ve no doubt that new mum Dannii
has a few ideas up her sleeve that she is waiting to
spring on me, but we will have to wait and see!
Fashion has been a passion of mine since I can
remember and I hope that every woman who slips on
a Project D dress will feel glamorous yet effortless.
Our philosophy is to make feeling confident with your
wardrobe easy. We will do the hard work and get the
details on the dresses right, so all you have to do is
enjoy them. To me, a design never comes to life until it
is slipped on – who knows what adventures the dresses
in this collection will get up to.

EXPERT STYLE
I’m really excited about the new season as it gives a chance to experiment with
new textures, tones and shapes. Something that was clear to see on many of this
season’s catwalks was that camel coats are making a comeback especially at Chloe
and Gucci and many of our favourite high street stores are following suit. I absolutely
love this Indigo coat, £275, from Reiss’ AW10 collection and can see it easily
becoming a staple part of any stylista’s wardrobe. My top recommendation when
buying a winter coat is to invest wisely; a camel coat in particular is a timeless, classic
piece, which can and will remain in your wardrobe for many seasons to come.
The classic LBD is a dress for all seasons, especially as we head into party
season. If you’re looking for a new twist on the classic piece then head to the high
street as many shops are offering their own take on the dress. This lurex thread fabric
dress with oversized bow, £99, from COS offers a sophisticated look for the office, or
team it with a pair of killer heels for a night out. The best thing about the LBD is that
you can keep reinventing it for every season with accessories to ensure that you’re
bang on trend.
Shoes and boots are all about embellishment this winter. Look out for buckles,
studs and even feathers, there’s a wide range on offer. My favourites are these
feather and bead boots, £69, from Miss Selfridge.
Statement jewellery is having a big fashion moment, and dominated the
autumn/winter catwalks. The recently opened Folli Follie concession at Level
Four in Selfridges offers a stunning range of pieces including watches, bracelets,
necklaces and rings. This rose gold necklace with round black crystal stone, £65
from the Elements collection is one of my favourites. Remember that the concession
in Selfridges is the only place in the Midlands at the moment where you can get your
Folli Follie fix!
Sad to pack away your summer maxi? Relax, the trend’s stretching into
autumn, too. The beauty of the autumn maxi is that you can secretly wear your
comfiest pair of Uggs without anyone knowing. Opt for darker floral patterns like
this maxi from Warehouse, £70, which mixes warm autumnal tones and with a boho
feel. Team it with a knitted cardi in autumn’s colours of warm burnt orange, stone
and all shades of grey.
So there you have it… one camel coat, an extremely versatile LBD, some gorgeous
feathered boots, exclusive jewellery and the ultimate winter maxi, all ingredients that
will guarantee to make your wardrobe the envy of any fashionista this autumn. Let’s
welcome autumn in true fashionista style as the high street looks set to be
dominated by divine textures and fabric, and powerful statement pieces.
