Sarah Palin first made history on December 4, 2006 when shewas sworn in as the first female governor of Alaska. In August2008, Senator John McCain tapped Palin to serve as his vice-presidential running mate in his presidential campaign, makingher the first woman to run on the Republican Party's presidentialticket.

In Alaska, her top priorities included fiscal restraint, limiting thesize of government, resource development, education, equitableoil valuation as well as transportation and infrastructuredevelopment. Palin fought for ethics reform and transparency in

government.

Palin has a long record of achievement and experience in publicoffice. Prior to her election as Governor, Palin served two termson the Wasilla City Council and two terms as the mayor ofWasilla. During her tenure, she reduced property tax levelswhile increasing services and made Wasilla a business-friendlyenvironment, drawing in new industry.

Under her leadership as Governor, Alaska invested $5 billion instate savings, overhauled education funding and protectedAlaska's natural resources. She created Alaska's PetroleumSystems Integrity Office to provide oversight and maintenanceof oil and gas equipment, facilities and infrastructure and theClimate Change Subcabinet to prepare a climate change strategyfor Alaska.

During Governor Palin's first year in office, three of heradministration's major proposed pieces of legislation passedanoverhaul of the state's ethics laws, a competitive process toconstruct a natural gas pipeline and a restructuring of Alaska'soil valuation formula.

Palin is past chair of the Interstate Oil and Gas CompactCommission, a multistate government agency that promotes theconservation and efficient recovery of domestic oil and natural

gas resources while protecting health, safety and theenvironment. She also served as chair of the National GovernorsAssociation (NGA) Natural Resources Committee, which wascharged with pursuing legislation to ensure state needs areconsidered as federal policy is formulated in the areas ofagriculture, energy, environmental protection and naturalresource management.

Sarah Heath Palin arrived inAlaska with her family in 1964,when her parents came to teachschool in Skagway. She ismarried to Todd Palin, who is alifelong Alaskan, worked as aproduction operator on the NorthSlope and is a four-timechampion of the Iron Dog, theworld's longest snowmachinerace. They have five children.

Born on February 11, 1964, inSandpoint, Idaho, Governor Palinmoved to Alaska with her familyat the age of three months, when

her father took a teaching position in Skagway, Alaska, beforeeventually settling in Wasilla.

A graduate of Wasilla High School, Governor Palin was the co-
