Vincenzo is an adorable second grader who has been diagnosed as having processing deficits. In addition to this learning disability, he also suffers from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and often exhibits severe behavioral problems that range from outrageous class antics that cause hysterical laughter in the class to emotional outbursts and tears of frustration. Both his desk and his backpack are usually a mess and he frequently receives low grades because he does not follow directions.

Both Miss Perez and Mr. Neal (Vincenzo's teacher and the class paraprofessional) recognize that he is an inherently intelligent young man. Vincenzo is generally well-liked by his classmates, which makes it that much harder to apply the discipline necessary to keep him from disrupting the class and wasting valuable time.  Although Vincenzo was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of five, his parents prefer not to medicate him, arguing that the drug causes him to "fall asleep everywhere" and alters his personality.
