SARAH HEINZ HOUSE BULLETIN November 2018 November, 2018 Sarah Heinz House One Heinz Street Pittsburgh, PA 15212 “It’s not happiness that brings us gratitude. It’s gratitude that brings us happiness” -Unknown Research shows that gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. Amazingly, the more we express gratitude (big or small), the likelier we are to have more to express gratitude for. Although the concept sounds simple, it is something that takes great discipline and daily practice. Our days often come with unexpected twists and turns, rarely going as we had hoped or planned. It is easy to become fixated on those curve balls and overlook the precious gifts that each day holds. Yet, if we are able to successfully remind ourselves to be intentional and actively look for those precious gifts, we will find them. Once found and appreciated (quietly or publicly), we will notice a positive change within ourselves. Our emotions have a profound impact on us individually, as well as collectively. Gratitude has been found to greatly impact mental well-being and organizational health. Thus, cultivating gratitude is an essential daily practice versus something reserved for the holiday season. A gratitude journal is one of the most common ways we can use to cultivate gratitude. Capturing a handful of moments, things, people, spaces and/or places each day is all that is necessary. I keep such a journal, albeit a very simple one. Each day, I list five bullet points in their rawest and realest form. One of my recent entries expressed gratitude for another day alongside my loving 16yr old dog; the sun on my face; quiet windshield time and colorful leaves on the drive home; enjoying chocolate covered pretzels; and forgiveness for taking out my bad day on loved ones. Organizationally, we pause weekly to acknowledge our “wins” and express gratitude toward one another. We also highlight our youth’s good works via the Gold Shield program and encourage you to recognize our staff/volunteers with kind words of encouragement and appreciation for the love, care and dedication they bring to The House each day. You can do so directly and/or by requesting a Heinz House Heroes card at the Front Desk. You will definitely experience joy by bringing joy to someone else in this process! Of course, I would be remiss if we did not express our heartfelt gratitude to you. You continue to play a critical role in making The House the unique and magical place that it is. As we embark on the holiday season, please know that you remain welcomed at our family table and we are wishing you many warm, wonderful and joy-filled moments with those special to you.
