MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK Peace and good!

As you know, Pope Francis designated 2015 as the “Year of Consecrated Life.” As we prepare to end this year of reflection on consecrated life, I would like to offer the following insights on the importance of living in religious community.

What is a religious community? What does common life look like? The Dominican spiritual writer, Philip Neri Powell, O.P. states:

A religious community is a group of women or men who have been called together by the Holy Spirit to give their lives to one another and pledge to live a religious life of freedom in obedience, poverty in simplicity and chastity in celibate intimacy, as they serve the Lord.” Such a community is made up of unrelated adults, usually of different generations, ethnic and economic backgrounds. Decisions are made together, as adult women or men who share wisdom and sensibility about what needs to be done.

Pope Francis invited religious to look to the past with gratitude, live in the present with passion, and embrace the future with hope. He offered the following challenge:

Living the present with passion means becoming “experts in communion”, “witnesses and architects of the ‘plan for unity’ which is the crowning point of human history in God’s design.” In a polarized society, where different cultures experience difficulty in living alongside one another, where the powerless encounter oppression, where inequality abounds, we are called to offer a concrete model of community which, by acknowledging the dignity of each person and sharing our respective gifts, makes it possible to live as brothers and sisters. (I, 2)

Another challenge Pope Francis presented to religious was:

I am counting on you “to wake up the world,” since the distinctive sign of consecrated life is prophecy…“Radical evangelical living is not only for religious: it is demanded of everyone. But religious follow the Lord in a special way, in a prophetic way.” This is the priority that is needed right now: “to be prophets who witness to how Jesus lived on this earth… a religious must never abandon prophecy.” (II, 2).

Faith, hope, and charity… Is there any better way to “wake up the world?”

ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH HERNDON, VIRGINIA FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 31, 2016

The Parish staff wishes to thank the following parish ministries: We thank our parishioners who provide for the cleaning, order, and maintenance of the Church. There are many parishioners and individuals who work behind the scenes. These individuals include those who just changed the Missalettes and Music Books in the pews; those who clean the pews after each of the Masses on the weekends; those who oversee the cleaning of the altar linens; those who clean the Church each Monday morning; those who tend to the flowers and plants; those who clean the Church for the weekend Masses; those who oversee the candle ministry; the parish maintenance staff; etc. We thank you for your ministry and work! We thank the Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers who visit the homebound, nursing homes, senior residences, and the ill of the parish. This ministry provides sacramental graces and comfort to those being visited. Many blessings! We thank our parishioners for your understanding of the revised Mass schedule this past weekend during the Blizzard 2016! Stay safe and warm!

2016 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL BEGINS!

Peace and good! This month many of us will receive a mailing from Bishop Loverde regarding the 2016 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA). The theme for the 2016 BLA is “Go forth as heralds of God’s mercy.” After reflecting upon the material you have received, I invite you to give thanks for the many blessings that God has given you. I also ask that you prayerfully consider making a pledge of support to this important appeal that funds many ministries and programs that serve the people in our diocese. Bishop Loverde shares:

Fittingly, as we continue in the Jubilee Year of Mercy, I have chosen “Go forth as heralds of God’s mercy” as the theme for the 2016 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA).

Over the past 16 years as your Bishop, I have traveled extensively throughout our diocese. In my visits to your parishes and schools, I have encountered your wonderful faithfulness, hospitality and profound charity. I am deeply grateful for the work being done to spread the Gospel through the BLA.

This is done, I am certain, with a spirit of love for God and neighbor, enabling our diocese to continue the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. The BLA supports our diocese in its mission of sharing the love and mercy of Christ through serving the needy, educating and forming our youth, encouraging vocations, promoting a culture of life and assisting the clergy, religious, and lay people who help build and strengthen our diocesan Church.

Pope Francis further conveys to us that mercy is “the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely in the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life.” When we join together through this important appeal, we lift up one another by extending God’s love and mercy in a very real and genuine capacity.

As a friar and priest who has had the privilege of ministering here at Saint Joseph Parish, I have been blessed to have shared in living out the spiritual and corporal works of mercy with Bishop Loverde, the friars, the faithful of the parish, and the faithful of the Diocese of Arlington. As you reflect upon your BLA pledge, remember that every pledge is an expression of God’s love and mercy! Let us “Go forth as heralds of God’s mercy.”

Parish Advisory Council

Peace and good! As of this week, I have received 45 nominations for the Parish Advisory Council (PAC). I thank the parishioners who submitted the nomination forms and for the time given to this process. I will review the nominations this coming week. It is my hope that we announce the parishioners selected to serve on PAC and schedule a PAC meeting in the coming month with the new membership. Once again, thank you for your willingness to share your time, talent, and treasure with the parish community.

Parish Mission Statement I would also like to thank those parishioners who submitted their comments, insights, and recommendations regarding the Parish Mission Statement. Know that I appreciated the insights and recommendations. The process of formulating the Mission Statement will continue and it is my hope that we will approve the Parish Mission Statement by the end of the Lenten Season. As you know, this has been a process with many parishioners involved in the dialogue. Be assured of my gratitude and prayers for you as we continue to deepen our faith and live out the Gospel values in our daily lives.
