Selected Reading Text: “The Four Friends”

The selected text is a simplified version of the traditional story “The Four

Friends”. This story is suitable for Standard 3 children because it has a storyline and

characters that would grab the attention of the pupils while the teaching and learning

process being held. It is also would be appealing and enjoyable to the children and use

simple vocabulary as well as repetitive past tense structures. They can easily

understand the story and the simple ideas used also can help the pupils to easily relate

it to their own experiences. The story also lends itself to many different kinds of

communicative tasks and activities.

“The Four Friends” is a story of four friends; a donkey, a dog, and a rooster. The

friends have a different characteristics and personality. The donkey was big and strong.

The dog was friendly and brave. The cat was clever and playful. The rooster was loud

and cheerful. They wanted to become musicians. They left their homes and they walked

throughout the journey for a long time.

This story would be appeal to pupils for many reasons. It has familiar characters

that can be related to the children’s interest and they can find it enjoyable by reading as

they would be able to identify them from their experience. Further, the story has a

simple straightforward plot with a series of repetitive events which help to make the

story comprehensible to the learners. The children also would be easily attracted to

read this kind of reading material. It is widely- known that children will get fascinated by

reading a fun stories about animal characters.

The story is also highly suitable to children at this age as it is written in very

simple language. The story can be used as an interactive teaching activity in the

classroom. The sentences are short and can be easily understood. The story

highlighted the usage of regular and irregular verbs. The children can learn the 2

different types of past tense in simple ways. Many of the words such as ‘walked,

‘looked’, ‘wanted’ and ‘started’ are the regular words, and the irregular word used in this

story is ‘stood’. From this, children can find it is not difficult to learn English grammar.

The children also can makes it easier for children to become familiar with these past

tense words and understand when it can be used.

In addition, the story is highly teachable as it is can be exploited for teaching

language. The story also lends itself to many different kinds of communicative tasks and

activities. The teacher can used it in many ways such as in read aloud activity and role

play. The children would enjoy taking on roles of the different animal characters and

reading out the dialogues in the story.

In conclusion, the story can be a good approach to children to make them feel

enjoy while learning English language. Through reading materials, a teacher can make

multitasking activities to create an alive classroom environment and ensure the

children’s needs can be carter individually.
