PaddleSmart For Everyone SAR NIF
What Is PaddleSmart?
• a free activity based presentation for new paddlers of any age to learn about water and paddle sports safety along with fun of the sport
• developed in 2013 in partnership with AdventureSmart (National Search and Rescue Secretariat) and Paddle Canada
• AdventureSmart is a Canadian Government supported initiative to help public “get informed and go outdoors”.
• Training is free to all Canadians. Presenter training is also free

The need for PaddleSmart • In Canada 15,000 SAR incidents annually assisting 25,000 people lost or in
distress.

History of Adventuresmart • In 2004 BC Emergency Management developed the program with SAR NIF
2005-2008 with assistance from BCSARA, RCMP and NSS.
• First programs to launch were aimed at youth market such as Hug a Tree and Survive.

SAR NIF 2013-14 • 1 year $144,392 project from April 1 2013 to March 31, 2014 • Goal was to train 400 presenters of the program nationally through 20
workshops. • Developed and produced the outreach materials for workshops including
stickers, paddler responsibility stickers, vessel ID stickers, printing of presenter manuals
• Attended as an exhibitor at 8 national outdoor or cottage trade shows promoting PaddleSmart program.

Project
• SAR NIF 2015-2018 : 3 year project of $2.1 million • Increase PaddleSmart volunteer trainers/hosts by 70%, reaching over 17,000 youth/new paddlers.
• Expand by 60% Train The Presenter courses to Provincial parks and camps

• Launch of a large national multi media campaign with partners Blue Ant Media (Cottage Life TV & 10 other media brands) including billboard, youtube, TV, radio, social media, music video and app and print ads.

After Year 1: ""Volunteer presenters of this program are Paddle Canada Instructors, Search and Rescue (SAR) members, Parks Canada and Provincial Park staff, Girl Guides and Scout leaders. ""

SAR NIF 2015-2018 After Year 1: ""• Hired 1 full time and 3 part time regional staff to
support the project plus 1 part time media management team"
• Attended 16 different national trade shows and paddling
events including Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal, Halifax, Edmonton

• Volunteer partners ran 52 PaddleSmart workshops "
• Created new paddle/sailsmart partnership with Ontario Sailing association. • Attended Ontario Physical Health Education Association and
New Brunswick Physical Health Education Association teacher conferences.

Year 2-3: we will seek interest and involvement from "Coast Guard, RCMP, Provincial Police, Lifesaving Society, Red Cross, Canadian Safe Boating Council, school boards, local paddling clubs, youth camps and organizations and anyone else wishing to deliver a recreational paddling safety program.""

Partnerships:
• National Paddling Week June 10-19,2016
• Started in 2013 by Rapid Media and Paddle Canada with over 500 events & 7000 participants nationally
• Distributed PaddleSmart messages and outreach materials to each event

Successes
• Communities / Clubs / Facilities (camps and municipalities) asked us to develop criteria for a “PaddleSmart Community” designation to help in their own branding, promoting safe paddling practices and providing PaddleSmart resources to paddling members and visitors to their region.
• Parks Canada is our largest supporter, committed to training many of their park staff as PaddleSmart presenters and will distribute materials to their 26 million annual visitors.

Challenges
• Demand for presentations and training outstrips the capacity to deliver.
• Staff Resources (3 staff) to support volunteer presenters
• Access to future funding to reproduce and distribute materials.
• Ongoing French translation costs and updates to program material
• Timely distribution of teaching & resource materials. Online registration of presenters and reporting workshops at adventuresmart.ca

The future of Paddlesmart/AdventureSmart
• Spring Paddle Safety Awareness event with Liberal MP Will Amos in Ottawa, ON
• Created the lifejacket wear challenge (wear it for 12, 24 or 48 hours) for spring/summer of 2016
• Created a campaign aimed at college and universities with PaddleSmart on campus training opportunities
