A COLOR PALETTEIn order to ensure differentiation between books, a diverse, calming color palette is used. Enza is an organization of handmade, natural products; the colors aim to reflect that.


ILLUSTRATING ENZABy using vector line art, reproduction of thematerials at different sizes is easy and efficient.

NARROWING FOCUSWe know that the communities we are going to reach usually have access only to essential tools, like those pictures. Enza patterns make use of only these simple tools to ensure universality in production.

INCORPORATING TRADITIONZulu is the most widely-spread home language of South Africa. Because a great portion of our audience speaks solely Zulu, translating our materials is vital. This book is entitled Enza Patterns when translated to English.


PATTERN TECHNIQUEThough different from a typical sewing pattern,Enza patterns focus on step-by-step procedure in order to develop the skills of the sewer. Each portion of the Enza wallet has been laid out for assembly in steps.

SIZING IT UPAll seven Enza booklets are printed as A5 sheets, approximately 148 mm x 210 mm or roughly half of an 8.5x11” piece of paper. This size is both easily held in one’s hand and legible.


DEFINING WHAT’S NEEDEDBecause of the different names held for parts of a sewing machine, the glossary will serve as thesaurus as well as dictionary. For example, balance wheel is often referred to as a hand wheel.

APPEALING TO OUR AUDIENCESewing machines exist in a rainbow of varieties, shapes, and sizes. In order to describe the parts of these machines in a realistic way, Your Machine includes images of a newer model of machine (above) as well as an industrial sewing machine, which are widely used.

PATTERN

WHAT’S IMPORTANTAs was mentioned before, babyclothes are in high demand in many low income areas. Giving mothers the ability to produce these for their own families will be huge.

KEEPING IT CLEARLarge, A0 patterns should only include the essentials, i.e. the pieces which are to be cut. Instructions on how to read the symbols in the more complex directions of the pattern can be found within the Patterns booklet on our Reading the Pattern poster (see pg. 52).


METRICSSouth Africa uses the metric system of measurement; all of the Enza patterns are adjusted to this.

REPRODUCABILITYKeeping the patterns in black andwhite facilitates easy duplication and printing.

THE WRITING ON THE WALLMost women in these communities have never read an official, computerized pattern before. Detailing the symbols and words they will be seeing is essential.

TELLING A STORYThe Enza Wallet is designedwith the intention of bringingease and comfort into the livesof women who may otherwisenot have had a way to keep track of their belongings. By explaining the use of the pill pouch, women will be able to understand how this wallet can give them back privacy they may have lost having to use pill bottles in public.

LOGO VERSATILITYBecause Enza has two factions (Craft and Heat) and hopes to expand to meet further needs as they arise, our logo has been crafted in a way that lends itself to more than one function. Enza Heat logo represents a flame within the existing protea, whereas Enza Craft depicts a needle.


VISUAL CUESIllustration of symptoms conveys the information clearly in a way that grabs attention but doesn’t overshadow the most important text.

EMERGENCY INFORMATIONThough contacts such as 911 are well known in the US, South African emergency services are not as clearly indicated at every instance. Reiterating where people can turn in times of crisis is vital, which is why the contacts are also listed in the inside cover of Enza Heat.
