New cover in “Roof Fund” Series.
The thirteenth in the series of covers produced to assist the Council’s fundraising efforts has been produced to commemorate the last day of business of the Adelaide General Post Office building. Expanded Philatelic Sales Centre in new Adelaide GPO Postshop
The post shop formerly in the Adelaide General Post Office has reopened in the new building just west of the old GPO on Franklin Street. The new facility has all the usual postal products and services available and features a much-expanded philatelic section which should please all local collectors and visitors alike. Check it out at 2-10 Franklin Street Adelaide, open 9am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays only.
The Great Aussie Coin Hunt.
A very clever coin collecting promotion is presently being run by Australia Post. A series of 26 one dollar coins has been issued by the Royal Australian Mint but they are only available when you make a purchase at a post office and receive one in your change. This promotional display was noticed by Martin Walker in Victoria Square in the city – it’s a travelling promotion that went from Adelaide to Port Pirie and on to Ceduna and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. It’s good to see our hobby promoted.
Special series of coins for Great Air Race Centenary.
The Royal Australian Mint has produced 10,000 sets of coins commemorating the centenary of the Great Air Race. The Mint will have a display at this year’s Coin & Banknote Show at the Torrens Parade Ground Drill Hall, 16-17 November.

Community Philatelic Society - 60th Birthday
The club had its beginnings on 23 October 1959. The first meeting was held in the garage of our first President Arthur Underdown (pictured left). He had answered an advertisement in the local “Community News” from Gordon Sanderson (pictured middle), who worked for the paper at the time. 12 people attended that first meeting and as far as we can determine Nick Yelland (pictured right), is the only surviving member from that meeting.
Over the years the club has been involved in exhibitions, including Themex 74 and Stampex 86. The club also has put up displays at the Marion Shopping Centre, Colonnades, West Lakes Mall and David Jones City Store.
The society organized, through its social committee, bus trips around South Australia. Nick Yelland, with his knowledge and contacts was a key factor in the planning, many thanks Nick.
The club had its own circuit book scheme, plus books from 3 interstate dealers and the SAPC circuit book scheme. Our stamp fairs were always well attended as have been our super auctions.
It was always the intention of the founding members to have our own club rooms, so a decision was made to purchase the house next to our main meeting hall, the TocH Hall at Edwardstown. This property had an orchard at the back, with almond picking a seasonal event. As time passed it was decided that renting a place would be a better option and so the property was sold. After a number of years trying to manage a huge sum of money, the society donated all but a small amount to the SA Philatelic Council for the purpose of upgrading SAPHIL House. Money well spent!!!
For the first 40 years the club grew to a membership of between 200-300 including nearly 100 members under the age of 16. There were 3 branches, - Edwardstown, Noarlunga, and Victor Harbour. Now we are just a mere shadow of those halcyon days. Will those days ever return?

Community Philatelic Society - 60th Birthday (contd.)
We produced our own magazine the “Stamp Vision”, our chief editor and printer was our long-time secretary Vic Leske. It had its own gossip column “Willy Blabbit”.
One of the highlights of the society’s history was receiving the “Stamp News” trophy for the most progressive society in Australia. (left - Vic Leske with the Stamp News Trophy)
Another highlight was receiving a letter from Buckingham Palace after the society presented a set of commemorative covers produced for the re-enactment of the meeting of Matthew Flinders and Nicholas Baudin at Encounter Bay. This set is now part of the Royal Philatelic Collection.
Jennifer Mibus receives Harry Butler Award
Jennifer receiving her Harry Butler Award for meritorious
service to a particular philatelic society from Phil Sunman.
Jennifer started in the world of philately by attending the SAPC Junior Stamp Club in 1988, when Mike Munzer co-ordinated that club. In 1993, she joined the Philatelic Society of South Australia when she attained the minimum membership age.
During John Bell's Presidency, Jennifer became a member of the PS of SA Committee, and not long after that she became the club’s delegate to the SA Philatelic Council. Jennifer remains on the society’s management committee after she became membership secretary under Les Csongei in 2014.
She has exhibited at congress, displays at meetings of the PS of SA, the South Australia Study Group and external clubs. She is a regular volunteer at our annual congress and also at national exhibitions, both at set up and pull down. Assisting with the running of the SAPC auctions. Jen is well known amongst the philatelic community of South Australia. Congratulations!

Report on the 2019 SAPC Philatelic Congress
Well, another successful Annual State Congress has come and gone at the Drill Hall, Torrens Parade Ground albeit that both the number of dealers and attendance were down on previous years. This year, Congress was hosted by the Australian Postcard Society which celebrated its tenth year.
Presentation of awards, medals and trophies was held at 1.00pm on the Saturday, with Club Patron of the Australian Postcard Society, Phil Sunman officiating. Winner of the Harry Butler Award for meritorious services to her Club, Philatelic Society of SA, was Jenny Mibus. Congratulations Jenny.
The Briskham and Maria Mincoff Awards were not presented due to no nominations.
As there are three events in consecutive months at the Drill Hall – Congress 12-13/10, Coin & Banknote Expo 16-17/11 and AEROPEX 2019 6-8/12, it is believed this has played some part in the smaller numbers.
All dealers appeared to have been happy with their sales with a few adding to stock by way of members of the public coming in with collections.
Many certificates, several medals and a number of trophies were presented which can be found listed elsewhere in this issue. Of particular note, was the closeness of the Club Competition with Eastern Districts running out winners by only 3 points over Para Hills. Congratulations Eastern Districts. The top State Award went to Harry Lower who achieved a Gold medal (84 points) for his “South Australia – Letterpress Pioneers” exhibit. Congratulations Harry. The Sunday afternoon saw the holding of a 350 lot auction. Using the dot system, close to 100 lots were sold. Next year’s State Congress will be held at the Drill Hall on the weekend of 10th & 11th October and will be hosted by the Eastern Districts Philatelic Society who will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary.

Unique Occasion at the Australian Air Mail Society….
With AEROPEX 19 just weeks away it seemed appropriate at the October 19 Airmail Society Meeting to have a party. The President of the Airmail Society and Vice President of AEROPEX 19, Margaret Noack and the President of AEROPEX 19 and the SA Philatelic Council, Martin Walker, celebrated their birthdays on the same day, September 30.
One of them turned sixty and the other relived her twenty-first birthday yet again, the exact age she was when Martin was born. Normal meeting attendance numbers swelled with guests from other Societies both near and far attending.
A suitably inscribed birthday cake was prepared and a good night was had by all. Special thanks to Colleen Martin for coordinating the catering.
…..and another birthday event at the Barossa Stamp Collectors’ Club.
At the Barossa Stamp Collectors Club meeting on 7 May 2019, Ray Thompson celebrated his 80th birthday. Claire Van de Pijl (cake maker) and the secretary Ray Thompson (birthday boy) and Barry Jarvis president. The Ray Thompson Trophy One Frame Display was won by Janet Bell for her exhibit on South Africa.

New exhibition at State Library of South Australia
Discover the amazing story of the England to Australia air race of 1919, won by two of South Australia’s favourite sons, Captain Ross and Lieutenant Keith Smith. Together with their mechanics, Sergeants Wally Shiers and Jim Bennett, they were the first Australian airmen to fly from England to Australia, achieved in 28 days in a modified Vickers Vimy bomber. The exhibition follows the lives of the Smith family from their early days at Mutooroo Station in the far north of South Australia to service in World War One and the public response to the tragic death of Sir Ross in an air crash in 1922.
The exhibition brings to life the excitement of the race and its aftermath through the State Library collections including the Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith Archive, as well as precious items on loan from other libraries, museums, and private collections.
Highlights relating to the race include the log-book and certificate of airworthiness of the Vickers Vimy, notebooks kept by Ross and Keith, a pocket compass, a magneto from the engine, and a piece of Vimy aircraft fabric. Also on display are the rarely seen knighthood medals awarded to Keith and the ‘flying wings’ won by Ross in the Australian Flying Corps and Keith in the Royal Flying Corps, which were taken into space with astronaut Dr Andy Thomas in 1996.
Of interest to collectors of air mail covers are the letters written from Ross and Keith Smith whilst on the flight to Australia.
GLENSIDE PHILATELIC SOCIETY
At the AGM on the 3rd August 2019 Dini Fotheringham retired as the treasurer
after three years of honourable service. Now in her position is David Gilbert, who
accepted the position and we wish him well.

AEROPEX Report
The preparations for AEROPEX are well advanced with exhibits, stand holders and events all settled. With 392 frames of exhibits this will be the largest philatelic exhibition in South Australia for many years and certainly the largest ever held at the Torrens Parade Ground Drill Hall.
AEROPEX Organising Committee Members, Martin Walker and David Figg have also been members of the History Trust of South Australia’s Epic Flight Centenary Committee since mid-2018. This has given AEROPEX access to many things not normally available to exhibition committees such as guest speakers, non-philatelic displays and promotional opportunities. This exhibition will be memorable.
With visitors coming from around the world expect to see, hear and meet some of the world’s experts in their fields. Likewise exhibits are also coming from around the world with accord arrangements for the United Kingdom, United States, India, New Zealand, Indonesia and China filling half the exhibition. The balance is coming from every state in Australia.
The air mail exhibition will be held at the Torrens Parade Ground Drill Hall from Friday 6 December to Sunday 8 December with doors open at 10am each day.
Volunteers Wanted for AEROPEX
The committee are seeking the help of volunteers before, during and after the exhibition. If you can spare any time from Wednesday 4 December to Sunday 8 December please contact Martin Walker (email - [email protected] or phone 0418 800 132). Particularly we are looking for able-bodied people to assemble the exhibition frames during the day on Wednesday 4 December and to assist disassembling the frames on the evening of Sunday 8 December.
On Thursday 5 December assistance to place exhibits in frames and general work in assembling displays, stands etc is sought.
During the show we are seeking assistance on the souvenirs and information stands and assisting members of the public with enquiries and directions to their favourite dealers or exhibits.
Finally, everyone can help to promote the show by mentioning it at club meetings, not just philatelic society meetings but any meetings. For a sneak preview of what’s on show the exhibition catalogue is available in the current edition of Australasian Stamps Professional magazine in your local newsagent or online at the Aeropex page on the APF Website.

President’s Report
Receiving the return mail from Minlaton on the Harry Butler Centenary Weekend.
When you read this, there will be a new president of the council as I am not seeking re-election for the 2019/21 term. When I first accepted the late John Bell’s invitation to take on the presidency of the council it was my ambition to lift the council out of the doldrums it was then in and to introduce some reforms and uptodate practices to do so. In the three terms I have served as President I have also presided over four National Philatelic Exhibitions, the refurbishment of SAPHIL House, bringing the Circuit Book Office back under the wing of the Council, and establishing procedures and policies for the ongoing management and control of the council and its assets into the future. A legacy that I am proud to leave.
Sadly a couple of important goals remain unfulfilled and if I am to leave any plans for the council for 2020 and beyond I urge them to pursue a business plan and structure that is manageable and to work on an active and ongoing publicity programme to bring and keep new members to organised philately.
I wish my successor all the best in further promoting this wonderful hobby and will make myself available for any advice, encouragement and assistance that is needed. At present I need to take some time out to both attend to my own personal affairs and also to the plight of some of my favourite clubs suffering from a lack of care and attention.
It is definitely a case of ‘au revoir’, and not one of ‘goodbye’.
Martin Walker
