General Info

Competition Rules

The St. Albert Photo Club (SAPC) is a non-profit organization that has been in operation since 1994.

Our club is open to people of all ages and skill levels, whether you’re an old pro or you just bought your first camera. Regardless what your “exposure” to photography has been, you’ll find many at the SAPC who share your level of experience.

Our members have an enthusiasm for photography, as well as an eagerness to share and learn new photographic skills.

The SAPC meets at 7 pm on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesdays of the month (Sept. to June), at the St. Albert Inn (just ask the reception desk where the meeting room is).

The first meeting of the month is our “guest speaker” night, when someone who specializes in a certain aspect of photography does a presentation of their knowledge and skills. Previous guest speakers have covered a wide range of digital photography topics such as portraiture, nature, travel, and photojournalism.

The second meeting of the month is our “training” night, when you can learn how to use your camera better...or maybe you want to know what steps are involved in using software such as Photoshop, Lightroom or Aperture to touch-up or enhance your photos.

The third meeting of the month is our “competition” night, when members can showcase their talent in our ‘Themed’ and ‘Open’ photo contests.

All the month’s activities are then highlighted in our monthy newsletter, ‘The Last Frame’.

Check out our web site to learn more about the club and to view the photo galleries of some of our members. To add your own photo gallery, please contact Barry Oppen (Webmaster).

1. Photos entered in all competitions must have been produced after final meeting of previous year (end of last June). The image must be captured photographically (digital or film). Only minor image adjustment is permitted, (cropping, sharpening, contrast, levels...like you would do in a dark room) for ‘Digital’ and ‘Themed’ photos, and must not be greatly manipulated (objects should not be added / removed to enhance the shot).

2. For ‘Open’ photos, there will be “no holds barred” on submissions. You can use old, archived photos, plus “Photoshop” (enhance) your image for this category only. But, no photo previously submitted for any category will be permitted. Nor will photos entered and won in any competition outside the club be eligible.

3. Paid members may submit a maximum of two images per monthly contest (2 for ‘Themed’ digital, 2 for ‘Themed’ prints, and 2 for ‘Open’ prints).

4. Send the person(s) who set-up the competition slide show, your original JPEG file(s). (Do NOT send RAW or TIF files.) This makes it easier for them to set the proper size of all images so they fill the big screen on competition night. Images are used for the slide show and newsletter only.

5. Digital files must be submitted NO LATER than 6 pm on the Monday preceding contest date by e-mail to (ONLY this address):

[email protected]

6. Digital images shall be titled with underscores to separate each word, using only alphanumeric characters (letters & numbers), starting with your first name and last intial (i.e. barryo_title.jpg).

7. Image size for printed photos shall not exceed 11”x14”, either horizontally or vertically. Images must also be matted on a mat not exceeding 16”x20”, either horizontally or vertically.

8. To qualify for competitions, images submitted must include info on: location (where shot was taken), focal length, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc. (This will tell others how you took the shot.) A small form (label) designed for this purpose will be available at the meetings, as well as on the SAPC web site (8-up in PDF format).
