4 Application Overview

Powered by SAP HANA, SAP Total Margin Management is an application that provides actionable information to enable you to optimize your business operations and financial planning processes, and also supports better decision making allowing for both short-term and long-term growth.

In the application, you create financial models to understand your current and future cost sources and product to customer profitability, and accurately predict and shape future outcomes while maximizing profit and increasing your customer base.

By separating costs into their base sources at a fine granularity, the application allows for a greater understanding of each identified cost origin. This explains unexpected cost variances and enables you to take action for improvement. The application supports all functional areas of business to understand your cost sources, with forecasting capabilities displaying modeled data (such as material cost forecasts). The broad cost decomposition is used to model future costs and revenues, which ultimately allows for profitability modeling at the product and customer level.

You can build rolling P&L and forecasts to help your organization to align with operational planning cycles that span across fiscal years. Essentially, this means you can model and forecast the P&L at customer and product levels, building up the cost for production based on the BOM and Routing. The results are integrated with the actuals to identify business drivers and their conversion to forecast levers to help steer the business. This is typically a monthly process and involves many participants including Sales, Marketing, Finance, Demand Planners, Supply Chain Planners, and Executives.

You can use the SAP Total Margin Management add-in for Microsoft Excel to view and change planning information, and to assess the impact of your changes. The web user interface enables you to do the following:

● View process dashboard● Analytics through information graphics and dashboards● Open favorite planning views in the SAP Total Margin Management add-in for Microsoft Excel● View alerts● Manage users● Configure the model● Data integration

The SAP Total Margin Management Help Center, accessible from within the application, contains information about how to use the add-in for Microsoft Excel, how to use the web client, configure models and perform advanced planning tasks. For more information about SAP HANA, see the SAP HANA SQL Reference Guide and the SAP HANA Security Guide.

6 Business Scenarios

Overview

You use SAP Total Margin Management to derive a forecast of the P&L at product / customer level. This requires the application to be configured, loaded with data, results calculated, and reports written.

Application Configuration

The Web UI is used to configure the application. The are three key functional areas which provide data for the calculation process. Each of these areas uses the concepts of Master Data Types, Planning Areas, Planning Levels, and Key Figures to provide the operators with the data needed to drive the calculation.

Defining Master Data Types

Master data that is shared across the application must be defined for:

● Cost Components● Movement Types● Materials

○ Header Materials○ Component Materials○ Input Parent Materials○ Input Materials

● Locations○ Production Locations○ Warehouse Locations○ Cost Origin Locations○ Supply Locations

● Cost Objects● Products● Customer (at a ship to level)● Account

Defining Time Series, Planning Areas, Planning Levels and Key Figures

SAP Total Margin Management Master GuideBusiness Scenarios

Page 9: SAP Total Margin Management Master Guide · PDF fileThe Costing planning operator requires specific ... This allows the calculation of a P&L by product and ... SAP Total Margin Management

The Volume Balance planning operator requires specific inputs to calculate the supply from the demand. Data for the following is required:

● Initial Inventory● Sales● BOM● Shortfall Supply● Planned Transfers● Planned Production● Production Adjustments● Volume Balance (output / result)

Costing

The Costing planning operator requires specific inputs to calculate the costs of production and distribution for the calculated production plan. Data for the following is needed:

● Volume Balance (output from Volume Balance operator)● Material Cost Rates● Freight Cost Rates● Direct Overhead Rates● Indirect Overhead rates● Labour Rates● Incurred Rate Adjustments● Applied Rate Adjustments● Cost of Good Sold (output)

P&L

The P&L planning area takes the costing results from the output of the costing operator to derive the associated COGS lines in the account dimension. Other lines are derived based on manually entered data and driver based calculations that are configured in the Web UI. This allows the calculation of a P&L by product and customer.

Load Data

Data and master data is loaded into application to populate the key figures required by the operators.

Execute Planning Operators

The planning operators are executed in the following sequence:

● Volume Balance● Costing● Lump Sum● Actuals

7 Security Guidelines

The following sections detail how to define and assign roles, authorizations, and visibility filters to SAP Total Margin Management.

7.1 Defining Roles

Roles determine which permissions your users have in the application and in the add-in for Microsoft Excel. You can also control the key figures that are visible to and/or editable for different users.

Context

If you do not assign any roles, by default all users can view analytics (charts and dashboards) with at least one visibility filter applied.

NoteThe predefined ALL-INCLUSIVE role has predetermined permissions that cannot be edited.

To define roles:

Procedure

1. Choose Roles and Permissions.2. To create a new role, choose + Add New Role.3. Enter a name (required) and a description (optional) for the role.4. Select the check boxes for the Permissions to include in this role. These are the permissions that are shipped

6. Select the check boxes for the Reason Codes you want this role to include. Reason codes are used to indicate why a user made changes to a planning view. When they save the data, users select a reason code and can enter a comment. Customers define their own reason codes.

7. When you are done adding roles, choose Save.

7.2 Defining Visibility Filters

Visibility filters control what master data is visible to a user for a particular planning area.

Prerequisites

● An understanding of master data types and how they are used by your planning area● Familiarity with your master data

Context

The Visibility Filters interface lets you create, edit, and delete filters. At least one visibility filter must be assigned to users in order for them to be able to view data.

● A visibility filter defines a set of attribute combinations that are visible to the user:○ If there is no condition for an attribute, all values are allowed.○ Conditions for different attributes within a visibility filter are combined with AND (intersection).○ Conditions for the same attribute within a visibility filter are combined with OR (union).

● Different visibility filters are combined so that the user has access to the union of the sets of attribute combinations that each of them allows.

NoteIf a user is assigned a role that has permission for supply planning, ensure that he or she has visibility to all data related to supply planning such as all attribute values related to customers, products, locations, resources, and bill of material (BOM) components. This is because the calculation of some key figures (such as capacity usage) may depend on other key figure values defined for various products, locations, and customers. If the user has limited visibility of data, the resulting key figure values will be incorrect.

The product ships with the predefined visibility filter View All Data for all of the planning areas. This filter enables the user to see all of the data in the application from all of the planning areas (and supersedes any other filter(s) that have been applied).

Visibility filters are dependent on the model configured in the Configuration interface. When you activate a planning area in Configuration, a View All Data filter is created for the specific planning area.

You cannot edit or delete the View All Data filter. If there is more than one visibility filter assigned to a user, there is an OR relationship between them (union).
