OverviewThe desktop version of SAP NetWeaver Business Client (NWBC) 4.0 has a modern, neutral, and simple look and feel, and implements an easy to use, browser-like navigation model(tabbed browsing). The desktop version allows you to adjust the appearance and settings ofthe business client to meet your personal and technical requirements, for example byselecting your theme or branding options.

The shell is a neutral, reduced frame that aims at reducing the space consumed by the clientin favor of applications running in the content area where users do their actual work. Userscan open the menu from the (Menu) icon in the header area and make system settings, customize view and personalization options, and access the help and support functions, including the product documentation. The presentation of the menu as a dropdown list alsohelps to save screen space at the top of the shell.

The shell design is intentionally neutral to frame content from diverse applications andtechnologies, be it Web Dynpro or SAP GUI transactions. The shell for the desktop client isrendered in the Corbu design by default. This is a theme with a light, neutral design, andenlarged resolution for better readability. The user can customize the appearance of the shelland content area by switching the theme in the personal settings. It is possible to select eithera dark or light flavor, which only affects the header area. The high contrast theme is alsoavailable, which triggers a theme change in the client, Web Dynpro, and SAP GUI pages. Allcontent except for content embedded as Web URL is displayed with the high contrast theme.

With introducing a tab-based navigation model (tabbed browsing), this version of NWBCoffers a modern, web-browser-like user experience coupled with easy navigation and a focuson content. To perform their day-to-day work, users need to be able to work on multiple tabsin parallel. They can load any content into the tab rather than into a new window. Users canswitch between the tabs easily without terminating the sessions; each new tab hosts a newsession. If users are working with many applications in one window at the same time, theycan get an overview of all the tabs in the tab bar by displaying the tab list or with the help ofthe tab previews in the task bar. The tab list displays all the tab titles if more tabs are openthan can be displayed in the tab bar. Users can display the complete list of open tabs and

quickly navigate to a selected tab by choosing the (Tab List) pushbutton in the tab bar.

It is possible to personalize a user's navigation structure by adding pages for frequently usedtransactions or applications to the favorites or by pinning tabs so they are available when theusers logs on to a system the next time.

Users have many different options to find and launch applications. This includes navigatingfrom an overview page, from the quick launch, or from the navigation panel. The overviewpages such as the Index page and the New Tab page serve as the central point of entry to arole-based navigation.

The powerful search and quick launch capabilities of the desktop client are combined in asingle type-ahead field. Users can either start a search using a configured search provider, forexample, the Desktop Search, or they can directly start transactions or Web Dynproapplications. Search results are grouped into different search categories, for example, byresults in Favorites and Recent Items, or by results for Desktop Search and Transactions andApplications.

(C) SAP AG User Interface Add-On for SAP NetWeaver 17

System ConnectionsIn NWBC you can have one or more connections to different servers. A connection containsall relevant data required to instruct a server to retrieve all the relevant roles for a user. SinceNWBC, as the shell, uses HTTP connections for its server communications, the connectiondata is also defined as an URL.

Although you can define several connections, you can only have one connection active at atime. If a new connection to a different system is started, NWBC is restarted to clear allcookies that are stored in process.

Prior to NWBC 3.0, patch level 8, NWBC considered only the setting in SAP Logon for allSAP GUI transactions that were started in NWBC. Even for remote servers, the setting fromSAP Logon was used. As of NWBC 3.0, patch level 8, you can configure SAP Logon systemsfor each server and client. You have to create a system connection for each server-clientcombination that you need.

The connection data is usually provided by the system administrator and must be configured.

Configuring a System

1. Click the (Menu) icon.

2. Choose Settings Connections Systems... .

3. The configuration dialog box opens:

4. Configure the systems NWBC connects to.

If you need to define specific SAP GUI settings, for example, SAProuter, you specifythese in the SAP Logon.

5. Configure an NWBC connection for all clients on all servers that are accessed withremote roles.

The following table explains the settings for configuring a system in the configurationdialog box:

6. Configure all necessary systems in SAP Logon. You can use specific settings, forexample, logon groups, SAProuter.

7. Test the navigation to all SAP GUI transactions:

o If a system configured in NWBC is not considered, check in which server andclient your transaction is started in the SAP GUI status bar.

o Check whether a connection is configured in NWBC which matches theserver URL and the client. Note that the server URL in the NWBC connectionsettings must be fully qualified (with domain name).

Search TypesTo conduct a search using the type-ahead field, you can use different types of searchproviders. These can be built-in providers such as Windows Desktop Search or Transactionsand Applications, search providers defined in the Role Maintenance (PFCG) transaction aswell as search providers defined in the front end of the client.

FeaturesEnterprise Search

The integration of SAP Enterprise Search, if configured (available fromSAP NetWeaver 7.03 onwards). All Enterprise Search connectors configured andactive on the SAP NetWeaver Application Server are automatically offered as searchproviders when conducting a search in NWBC for Desktop.

External Search

NWBC has a built-in search functionality using search providers that have beenconfigured in advance in one of the following ways:

o Centrally using the Role Maintenance (PFCG) transaction

For more information, search for 5 Role Maintenance in PFCG in SAP Libraryfor SAP NetWeaver Business Client 3.5 on SAP Help Portal athttp://help.sap.com and read the Menu section.

o Locally in the Search Provider settings (using NWBC’s Search Providersdialog)

A search provider is defined by a URL. There are two types of URLs:

o A direct search URL that contains a placeholder for the query string thatresults in an HTML page with search results. The URL can be any URL thatcontains a string “{0}” as the placeholder. This placeholder is replaced withthe query the user enters and the URL directly navigates to the specifiedHTML search result page.

Example: http://www.sap.com/search/index.epx?q1={0}

o An OpenSearch URL that points to an OpenSearch metadata description(see http://www.opensearch.org).

The metadata is an XML file that can contain multiple search services in thefollowing flavors:

As HTML search result page

As suggest providers whose result is a list of search suggestions thatare displayed in the dropdown menu of the quick launch

Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/opensearch_desc.php

Desktop search

The Windows Desktop Search is an embedded standard Microsoft search option thatis available as of Microsoft Vista and is an optional installation component ofMicrosoft XP with service pack 2.

Logging OffActivities

When you have finished working with NWBC, log off by clicking the (Close) icon in thecorner at the top of the screen or by clicking (Menu) icon and choosing Window CloseAll and Log Off .

All sessions are terminated, and all active windows and applications are closed in NWBC.

Be careful to distinguish between authentication (which allows the browser to interactwith the server) and a logoff sequence (which terminates all sessions on the server).Depending on the authentication method that is used within the browser, it is possibleto log off from the server and consequently have all sessions terminated while havingthe authentication information available within the browser (for example, when usingbrowser-supported basic authentication or when using digital certificates). Forexample, if digital certificates are used and the browser interacts with the serveragain, a new session is automatically started. Therefore, we highly recommend thatyou close the browser window after logoff.
