And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our heartsthrough the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

    Romans 5:5

Our conscience is that inward reflection that makes us consider and review the choices anddecisions we make and the actions we take in life. What is it that drives this thoughtprocess? It is the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts.

As you browse through this catalog, let the Holy Spirit reside in your heart and mind to helpyou determine how to use your gifts of time, talent, and treasure. We are called to be goodstewards of the gifts we have been given, but the process of discerning what we do with those

gifts is often difficult, because of the demands of family, work, friends and other needs. Itis important to remember we have been called to give back a portion of what we have and tohelp one another. The sacrifices it takes to do this are often difficult and humbling, butresult in great rewards, as we help and care for others.

Your gifts are needed in many ways throughout our church parish and community. Takesome time to decide how you can give 2-4 hours per month of volunteer time, using themany varying talents you have, or share your financial blessings. Your sacrificial givingis an expression that God is truly number one in your life, and the Holy Spirit will be thereto help with your decisions.

Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, thatyou may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

    Romans 12:2

So, please join us in the journey of spiritual growth by using your gifts of time, talent andtreasure to respond to the need we all have to give of ourselves and grow in the Spirit.

In the mid 1930s, Fr. Sydney F. Dean, a diocesan priest assigned as an associate pastor atSt. Marys Church in Greenville, felt called to evangelize the African-American. The firstwork was done with the Sisters of Mercy of St. Marys convent. On September 24, 1934

Fr. Dean organized the St. Peter Claver Society, and the first members of the society werebaptized in May 1935. Because most of the members worked at St. Francis Hospital, thegroup began to meet in the hospital chapel.

On February 1, 1939, Fr. Joseph Michael McGrath, O.F.M. arrived in Greenville as the firstpastor of the new mission church, built to serve the growing number of black Catholics. Sixacres of land on Gower Street were purchased by the Franciscans, and ground was broken for construction of a combined chapel and friary on May 1, 1939. The new friary andchapel were virtually completed by the end of August; the first Mass was celebrated on

    Sunday, September 3rd

. The mission, under the title St. Anthony of Padua was formallydedicated by Bishop Walsh on Mission Sunday, October 22, 1939.

For several years the friars and parishioners sought to build an activities center. This dreambecame a reality on July 17, 1949, when a solemn Mass was offered in the new center. On

June 17, 1950, an old farmhouse at 204 Douthit Street was purchased to be used as a schooand convent. After much hard work and preparation on the old house, the kindergarten through fourth grade school opened on September 9, 1951. Sisters from the Franciscancommunity of Stella Niagara were assigned to staff the school.

The parish continued to grow and, by 1956, numbered 232 people. At that time, a newchurch and school were built. The school served kindergarten through eighth grade. Since1986, the Franciscan Sisters of Williamsville, New York, have staffed the school. The parishcontinued to grow, and the church was expanded in 2002 to accommodate over 600 people.

What is Stewardship? What is Stewardship? What is Stewardship? What is Stewardship?

Stewardship is about Gods gift to us and how we respond and build a lovingrelationship with him. When we give of ourselves, we grow in our relationshipwith God and in our spirituality. Giving back to God by using our gifts of

time, talent and treasure is a personally enriching experience.

    How do we get started?

Through prayer, youll figure out what you can give back to God of your time, talent and treasure.

The greeting of good morning helps the usher todiscretely discern how to welcome and what help to offer. Ushers serve in a Christ-likemanner by being prayerful, patient, helpful, and understanding. Ushers radiate the joy
