    There are R/3 users at all ends of thespectrum. The small- and medium-sizedenterprise benets from the business pro-cesses of the SAP system just as the globalgiants do. For years R/3 was ne-tuned,constantly expanded, and enriched withe-business functions. Some customers kepton adapting the client-server package overtime to meet their own changing needs,while others adhered strictly to the standard,and even today have not moved one jot

    from it.For many companies that have implement-ed R/3, the functionality will suffice to ful-ll their business requirements in the fore-seeable future. SAP is safeguarding itsusers investment and planning by extend-ing the maintenance for the euro-enabledreleases as of R/3 3.1I and above up until

    August 2003. SAP has even given a main-tenance guarantee for Release 4.6C untilJune 2004.However, the priorities have changed.Companies can no longer afford to put offInternet projects.     Smart technology makes implementationfaster and more secure. It spans both theplanning process for the technical infrastruc-ture and the installation and congurationof all components. Mutual dependencies andinterfaces are taken into account as early asthe conguration and planning stage, whichensures compatibility of all the components.

    As with manually installed SAP systems,those installed with smart technology donot have any limitations. You can modify allsettings after installation. The technical con-guration is part of the installation process,and adjustments are made more quickly andeasily than setting up a new system.

Within this framework,IDES provides integrated business scenariosfor customer relationship management, sup-ply chain management, portals, and Internetbuying. Standard users with all the neces-sary roles have been set up for this. You canevaluate ready-made examples step-by-stepusing predened roles, such as campaignmanager or demand planner. You can alsodene the roles you require. And unlike

    IDES, you can congure your own processesand create the corresponding data.
