Why virtualizing SAP ?
5
Reduce CAPEX & OPEX
Increase Quality of Service
Enhance Agility & Flexibility
Enhance Availability
+40% of x86 SAP customers in Germany have 100% virtualized their SAP landscapes, source: RAAD
• 99.9%+ availability*
• Zero downtime and zero data
loss with vSphere features
like vMotion, enabling
business continuity without
compromise
• Automatically restart of SAP
VMs to maximize uptime
Better Service Levels
• Rapid provisioning: deploy
within hours vs. days**
• Template provisioning
ensures consistency and
scalability across
environments
• 50%+ reduction in IT Admin
hours***
Faster Time-to-Value Lower TCO
• Reduce CAPEX by 70%
and OPEX by 56%***
• Unify and manage SAP
Applications with the rest of
virtual data center
• Greater utilization of
existing resources and
infrastructure

The Reality of Running SAP Workloads on VMware
• In the transactional world
– Bursty sub-seconds workloads
– SAP Sybase ASE, Replication Server
• 10% of 250mSec is negligible
• Is it even measurable at the application layer?
• In the world of SAP HANA
– Analytic or mixed workloads
– Example response times
• Without SAP HANA = 4620 seconds
• With SAP HANA = 14.5 seconds
• SAP HANA on vSphere = 16 seconds

SAP HANA Scale Up Consolidation & Multiple HANA VMs
14
Consolidation of SAP HANA Databases
• Right sizing – mixed HANA T-shirt sizes
• ROI – purchase large server rather than multiple smaller server
• Fully isolated, secure, and encapsulated
• Not SAP HANA MCOS / MCOD
• vSphere 5.5 – 4 TB per host
• Multi-HANA VM Controlled Availability for productive scenarios
Consolidating with other Virtual Machines
• OK: SAP HANA database & other virtual machines
– SAP Application Servers; other applications or databases
• Fully supported for productive scenarios
• No over commitment of resources allowed
*Multiple HANA VMs require SAP approval (controlled availability)

SAP HANA on VMware vSphere Best Practices Guide
• All the best practices are covered in detail in the best practices guide
• http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/SAP_HANA_on_vmware_vSphere_best_practices_guide.pdf
15
SAP HANA on vSphere Best Practices Overview
• SAP HANA on vSphere – It just Runs!
– For the most part SAP HANA follows general published vSphere Best Practices for databases:
• Set Memory reservations for SAP HANA Virtual Machines
• Configuring Paravirtual SCSI Controllers and Network Adapters
• Right sizing of HANA VMs to ensure local NUMA node memory access and high 2nd level cache hit ratios
• No NUMA node sharing for production SAP HANA VMs
• Enable Hyper Threading on the ESXi host
• Use dedicated networks for vMotion, management and client network
• Use vMotion and VMware Snapshots during non peak times
• Use the HANA HWCCT tool to determine if the storage subsystem is able to meet the HANA KPIs

Mission Critical: Zero Downtime Migrations for Mission Critical Apps like SAP HANA
• VMware vMotion
- Move running virtual machines across ESXi Server
• Live Migrate SAP Applications and HANA Databases
- Zero downtime maintenance
- Migrate live databases
- Little impact to users
• Critical For In-Memory Databases
- Preserves the entire state of memory
- Avoid a database – loses temp tables, computations
- VMware vMotion – All or Nothing
- Like an atomic transaction; completes or does not complete
- Does not leave VM in phantom state

SAP Business Continuity - VMware Fault Tolerance
• Single identical VMs running in lockstep on separate hosts, one is primary
• Zero downtime, zero data loss of ASCS virtual machine in case of hardware failure
• Alternative solution to SAP Enqueue Table Replication
• How much load can 1 x vCPU VM running ASCS handle?
• 1000 concurrent users running SD txns, which generated 10,000 SAP lock requests per minute during one point in
the run, caused an avg. CPU utilization of ASCS VM of 29%*

Migration of SAP HANA to a PTCloud VMware infrastructure
with HANA revision update (1.0.48 to 1.0.73)
• The Migration of the Catalog and the Content information occurred
normally without any incompatibility presented between 1.0.48 and
1.0.73 revision;
• The performance in the operations made reads, inserts, updates,
deletes, row to column, column to row are stable when comparing both
architectures.
• All the processes maintain their performance and there were no
need to change any development;
• The overall performance of the operations didn’t suffer any decrease but
the inserts operations are more adjust to our needs. Example: In the
previous architecture some operations carried locks on the HANA DB
when using the Bulk option enable and the solution was to disable in all
process, now there is no need to frequently restart the HANA services
and we have the Bulk option enable and more In-Memory options active.
“All the processes maintain their
performance and there were no
need to change any development”

Conclusion
Conclusions
• Virtualize all of your SAP applications and databases with confidence an VMware vSphere!
• SAP HANA on vSphere is fully supported in production and has great performance.
• Rigorous joint testing by SAP and VMware over two years found zero functional errors with a 100% pass rate.
• Combining SAP HANA and vSphere provides additional benefits with regards to deployment, availability and costs.
• 74% of typical SoH sizes are 1 TB or smaller, 95% are 4 TB or smaller
• HANA SPS 09 provides SAP HANA dynamic tiering to support petabyte scale deployment - not confined by the size of virtual machine (VM) memory.
Thank You
