Summary This document describes how and when to use the SAP BusinessObjects Translation Manager to translate Web Intelligence documents and Universes into multi languages. It also describes the prerequisites and limitations of this tool.

Translation Manager The Translation Manager (TM) is the tool to translate the documents form one language to several languages. The Translation Manager (TM) translates only Universes and Web Intelligence documents.

Important Points

• Translates universe or a Web Intelligence documents for a multilingual audience.

• Defines the metadata language parts of the document and the appropriate translation.

• It generates external XLIFF format and imports XLIFF files to get translated information.

• Lists the universe or Web Intelligence document structure to be translated.

• Allows translation of the metadata through the interface.

• Allows the translation of the metadata using external translation tools by exporting and importing XLIFF files.

• Creates a multilingual document where several languages can be saved.

• Uses a common terminology, locale.

• Uses several specific language types.

Language Types

The Translation Manager uses several specific language types:

• Product Language - The language in which the application appears.

• Document Language - The language defined when creating documents (Universe and Web Intelligence).

• Preferred Viewing Language (PVL) - The preferred viewing language while working with the application (InfoView, Web Intelligence rich client).

• Substitution (Fallback) Language - The language that displays by default when the viewing language or preferred viewing language is not available.

• Source Language - The source language for the Autofill option used by Translation Manager.

Translation Modes

Translation Manager supports all login authentication modes:

• Online Mode - Work while connected to the CMS. Import and export documents from the CMS, and open, edit, and save documents in a local directory.

• Offline Mode - Work without a connection to the CMS. Open, edit, and save documents in a local directory.

Translation Methods

Translation Manager supports the following translation methods:

• In-House Translation - For in-house translation, allows translation with the Translation Manager. Can work online or standalone.

• Third-Party Translation - For third-party translation, allows exporting and importing documents in the industry standard XLIFF file format (XML Localization Interchange File Format). This format is used by professional translators and is compatible with many translation tools. Can work online or offline.



Step By Step Solution

1. Maintain language, Folder to save the XLIFF file, destination to save the documents, autofill option for language string, etc.

Login to the Translation Manager as your authentication mode:



2. Click Windows > Preferences.



3. Open a document (Universe or Web Intelligent document) form local repository or Import from Central Management Console (CMC) to translate.



Once a document (Universe or Web Intelligent Document) is imported from CMC or from local repository, the Translation Manager displays all its seven views:

• Editor / Translation Editor (View 1) - Main view, displays a table format with the universe the outline items in the left column, and languages to localize in columns. It has two views, List View and Category View.

• Language Management (View 2) - Displays all available languages that you can add or remove to or from documents.

• Document Properties (View 3) - Lets you set the source language of the universe and the Substitution language.

• Properties (View 4) - Indicates the values of properties of a string in a table cell in the Translation Editor view.

• Filters (View 5) - Filters text by status.

• Text Editor (View 6) - A floating pane to translate long text strings.

• Error Log Editor (View 7) - Displays alarms and errors while working.



4. Select translating languages from the Language Management view by moving them from Available Language to Selected Languages.

The document (Universe) is developed in English. Once the document is opened in Translation Manager, the document is displayed with source language (English) in Editor View.

Once the languages to translate are moved from Available Languages to Selected Languages in Language Management, the text for the selected languages is displayed by the default copy of the source language. This is due to the Autofill option (shown in block above).



5. Translate the document (Name and Descriptions), in a specified field in Editor View by selecting the field. Enter the appropriate translated words in Text Editor View. Click Apply.



Use this method to translate the fields of all languages.



6. Select each translated field. Check the properties of that field in the Properties View to confirm whether the field is translated or not.



7. Click Yes under the Ready to Export to CMS field for all the languages in the Language Management View.

The next screen displays how many strings are translated from the available strings.



8. Click OK to continue. Repeat step 6 for all the selected languages.

Maintain Source and Substitution languages in the Document Properties View.



9. Save and Export the document to CMS.

Note: If you are not using the Translation Manager to translate (In-House Translation), Translation Manager allows you to translate the documents using Third Party tools by saving the document structure in XLIFF standard format

Click File > Export.

Select Export to XLIFF. Provide the description. Click Next. It creates an XLIFF file in the XLIFF destination folder, maintained in step 1.

Import the file in any third party tool and start translating.



10. Create a Web Intelligent document on translated document (here Universe). Check whether the documents are translated into selected languages or not in InfoView.

Limitations • Only Universe and Web Intelligent documents are allowed in Translation Manger to translate.

• Translated documents can be viewed in InfoView.
