The below overview provides a programme of the two days activities and more information about the projects being visited. Confirm your participation to above contact by 15 February, 2017. OVERVIEW São Félix do Xingu is a large municipality in the state of Pará, Brazil. Since 2001, it has had one of the highest deforestation rates in the Amazon. Covering an area of 8.4 million hectares with more than two million head of cattle and a little more than 106,000 inhabitants, it is easy to see what is the main cause of deforestation. In relation to that, TNC, Marfrig food company and Walmart retail chain have initiated a project to reinforce sustainable livestock practices, involving local government and farmers, developed as a beef traceability platform called “from field to table” The activities promoted by TNC and other partners on the field involve also Indigenous engagement, women empowerment, REDD+ strategies, diversification of small-holder agriculture though cocoa based agroforestry on degraded pasture, and strengthening of local governance. All of this in a context where the deforestation, illegal logging and land conflict is still a challenge. This reality will be explored and reflected by the participants on 2 days of visits, meetings and dialogue with local ranchers, farmers, authorities and technical team.
