The progress of Rotary's "Support Our Students Program,"which began with a focus on truancy six years ago and has developedinto a counseling program at 21 school, will be the focus of thismeeting.
The four Santa Rosa Rotary clubs founded SOS in 1991 afterresearching the problems of teen-agers and the beginnings of gangactivity in Santa Rosa. From a Rotary budget of $10,000 threeyearsago ~ theSunrise club contributes $2,000 annually ~ theprogram hasgrown to about $120,000 in funding ... only 11 percent of that fromRotary clubs.
During 1996-97 the SOS program was honored by receiving the"Spirit of Santa Rosa" award from the Santa Rosa Chamber ofCommerce; the "Volunteer Group of the Year" award from the SantaRosa City Schools Board of Education and the"Special Award forCommunity-School Cooperation" from the Jack London Excellence inEducation Committee.
With in the last two weeks, the programwas recognized in "TheRotarian" magazine for Rotarians throughout the United States.
SOS includes 24 counselors who provide more than 250 hoursof counseling services each week in local schools. This has grown fromseven counselors and 40 hours per week of counseling injust threeyears.
Sonoma State University is a major partner in the program. Dr.Mark Doolittleof SSU directs the program and most of the counselorsare students earning their master's degrees.

The BIG event is planned for Thursday, June 5tlwe will dedicate the school fields project —and the fieldfor all to use in June ... or soon after that date.
Please put this date on your calendar. We will benoon on June 5th ~ instead of our normal breakfast — v
lunch served next to the 3-acre field. Vicki Lockner is o
food end of the event, and we will soon be setting up a <plan the activities —and festivities.
Tentative plans include inviting the entire schoolPTA, school board, city officials, companies that donatiproject -- and the media. We hope to make the ceremonwith a ribbon cutting ceremony —followed by all of thedashing onto the field for the first time!!
The $120,000 fields project is the largest Commiproject our club had done —we spent $45,000 on the pr«thousands of hours of time and received $75,000 in in-ki
contributions from local businesses.
Club Assembly
President-Elect Art King is organizingour club's delegation tothe District 5130 Assembly to be held April 18 and 19th in Ukiah.
The Assembly is basically a training ground for incoming clubofficers. It also offers special discussions on getting the most out ofRotary for long-term Rotarians.
The program begins with dinner on Friday evening at LakeMendocino Club. Breakfast and registration starts at 7:30 a.m.Saturday, with the program from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Bring a friend dayThursday, March 27th, has been designated as "Bring a Friend
to Rotary Day." We have an excellent program on the 27th featuringRon Oriti, director of the Santa Rosa Junior College Planetarium. Theprogram will be on the Hale-Bopp Comet which can be seen during theearly morning hours in the eastern sky.
Bring a Friend day is a part of the club's MembershipDevelopment program led by Eve Nighswonger.
Worldwide Rotary projects
Our club has two international events coming up ~ one ourannual student exchange program in Japan and the other our eyeglassproject in Haiti —that need support from club members.
Both projects depend on donations —over and above whatSunrise Rotary Club can provide.
Bob Scott, who's directing SRKSEP (Santa Rosa-KagoshimaStudent Exchange Program) is organizating a group to travel fromSanta Rosa to Japan from July 8th through Aug. 4th. He needs to raiseabout $2,800 to help defray costs of the trip for students.
John Jones is leading the eyeglass project to Haiti and about$4,000 to $5,000 (including our club) to defray expenses.

Perfect Attendance Month is designed to remind and encourageRotarians to participate. Attendance is the cornerstone of Rotary ... andbesides there are a lot of great clubs around us to visit!
President Randy has offered to contribute $200 to our WorldCommunity Service projects if the club is successful —$100 to ourHaiti eyeglass project and $100to Santa Rosa-Kagoshima ExchangeProgram.
Tentative plans call for a group makeup dayat the SebastopolRotary Club ~ since so many members of that club attend our meetings.

If your "Rotary Buddy" doesn't attend a meeting, callthem to make sure they make up —or make up with them.!Remember, Rotary allows make ups two weeks beforea missedmeeting and two weeks after. Attending the District Assembly counts asa make up.

Worldly success!!A year-long frustration for Director Dale Zumfelde, our director
of International Service, has finally ended in success!!Dale helped raise money more than a year ago for our project of
buying medical supplies to help war-torn Croatia. The project has longbeen completed on our end —a total of $4,152 was raised, and thenmatched at the district and international level.
We were ready to send the supplies, but unfortunatelycommunication was difficult with a Rotary Club in Croatia and despiteDale's repeated attempts, could not get a letter from our partner club inCroatia. But finally, that letter has been received by the RotaryFoundation and the long-awaited medical supplies should be deliveredsoon!
New Club Officers will be taking office in July, but they may askfor support during the next few months as theyget organized. Pleaseoffer your assistance.
1997-98 Sunrise Rotary Club officers: Art King, president; JoGennuso, secretary; Steve Herron, treasurer; Russ Lockner, presidentelect; Randy Seelye, past president; and directors Pat Solar, SteveOlsen, Jeff Young, Dave Brown, Eve Nighswonger and JimMcCracken.
