‘Love of My Life’

• Huge classical influence within the song

• Brahms 3 Symphony, 3rd Movement –Allegretto

• There is a difference in the rhythms of the two pieces – Santana plays the melody in 4/4 in G minor, instead of 3/8 in C minor.

Bo Diddley Beat

– Bo Diddley was a Blues/Rock and Roll artist

– He wrote a song called ‘Bo Diddley’ which made him very popular.

– The ‘Bo Diddley beat’ is a syncopated rhythm that makes up the drum and guitar parts of the song.

Cry Baby Pedals

In his solo, Santana uses a lot of Wah -wah pedal.

A popular brand of wah pedal is the Cry Baby (as in ‘waaaaaaaaah!!!’)

Used a lot in the rock music of the 1960s and 1970s, and popularized by Jimi Hendrix

Guitar techniques used – new key words to write down

• Cry baby pedal

• Pitch bends – where the string is pushed/’bent’ upwards to a new pitch

• Vibrato – a rapid alteration in pitch, producing a strong note/pitch

• Distortion – when a pedal is used t give the instrument (usually guitar) more bite and crunch

• Glissando – a continuous slide upwards or downwards between 2 notes

Bossa Nova

• A style of Brazilian music derived from samba but placing more emphasis on melody and less on percussion.

• A dance to this music would be the ‘Bossa-Nova’

• Sometimes known as lounge jazz.

• Popularized in the 1950s and 1960s and is today one of the best-known Brazilian music genres abroad.

• The phrase bossa nova means literally "new trend"

• ‘Love of my Life’ uses elements of bossa nova in the final 2 minutes instrumental outro.
