La Epifanía es una de las fiestas litúrgicas más antiguas, más aún que la misma Navidad. Epifanía, voz griega que a veces se ha usado como nombre de persona, significa "manifestación", pues el Señor se reveló a los paganos en la persona de los magos. La Epifanía es popularmente el día de los reyes magos. En la antífona de entrada de la misa correspondiente a esta solemnidad se

canta: "Ya viene el Señor del universo. en sus manos está la realeza, el poder y el imperio". El verdadero rey que debemos contemplar en esta festividad es el pequeño Jesús. Las oraciones litúrgicas se refieren a la estrella que condujo a los magos junto al Niño Divino, al que buscaban para adorarlo. El sagrado misterio de la Epifanía está referido en el evangelio de san Mateo. Al llegar los magos a Jerusalén, éstos preguntaron en la corte el paradero del "Rey de los judíos". Los maestros de la ley supieron informarles que el Mesías del Señor debía nacer en Belén, la pequeña ciudad natal de David; sin embargo fueron incapaces de ir a adorarlo junto con los extranjeros. Los magos, llegados al lugar donde estaban el niño con María su madre, ofrecieron oro, incienso y mirra, sustancias preciosas en las que la tradición ha querido ver el reconocimiento implícito de la realeza mesiánica de Cristo (oro), de su divinidad (incienso) y de su humanidad (mirra). A Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar puede llamárselos adecuadamente peregrinos de la estrella. Los orientales llamaban magos a sus doctores; en lengua persa, mago significa "sacerdote". La tradición, más tarde, ha dado a estos personajes el título de reyes, como buscando destacar más aún la solemnidad del episodio que, en sí mismo, es humilde y sencillo. Esta atribución de realeza a los visitantes ha sido apoyada ocasionalmente en numerosos pasajes de la Escritura que describen el homenaje que el Mesías de Israel recibe por parte de los reyes extranjeros. La Epifanía, como lo expresa la liturgia, anticipa nuestra participación en la gloria de la inmortalidad de Cristo manifestada en una naturaleza mortal como la nuestra. Es, pues, una fiesta de esperanza que prolonga la luz de Navidad. Esta solemnidad debería ser muy especialmente observada por los pueblos que, como el nuestro, no pertenecen a Israel según la sangre. Con conciencia siempre creciente de la misericordia del Señor, construyamos desde hoy nuestra espiritualidad personal y comunitaria en la tolerancia y la comprensión de los que son distintos en su conducta religiosa, o proceden de pueblos y culturas diferentes a los nuestros. Sólo Dios salva: las actitudes y los valores humanos, la raza, la lengua, las costumbres, participan de este don redentor si se adecuan a la voluntad redentora de Dios, "nunca" por méritos propios. Las diversas culturas están llamadas a encarnar el evangelio de Cristo, según su genio propio, no a sustituirlo, pues es único, original y eterno.

LA EPIFANIA DEL SEÑOR/ THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

La Epifanía del señor IS 60: 1-6; PS 72: 1-2, 7-8, 10-13; EPH 3: 2-3A, 5-6; MT 2: 1-12 A medida que continúa nuestra celebración de Navidad, hoy observamos la gran fiesta de La Epifanía del Señor. La palabra "epifanía" proviene del griego y significa manifestación o apariencia. La forma de vida de mayordomía es una en la que vivimos en respuesta agradecida a las innumerables manifestaciones de Dios en nuestras vidas. Nuestro pasaje del Evangelio, de Mateo, tiene mucho que enseñarnos sobre la mayordomía, a través de las acciones de los magos. Como buenos mayordomos, los magos estaban atentos a las manifestaciones de la presencia de Dios en sus vidas. "Hemos visto la estrella en su ascenso", dicen. Los buenos administradores son muy conscientes de la "estrella" de la presencia de Dios y sus dones en sus vidas. Es esta conciencia la que los llena de gratitud y el deseo de adorar a Dios y compartir sus dones con los demás. Los magos, al ver la manifestación de la presencia de Dios en sus vidas, "se llenaron de alegría". Los buenos mayordomos, que viven con la conciencia de la presencia y los dones de Dios para ellos, simplemente no pueden evitar sentirse llenos de alegría. No necesariamente el tipo de alegría fugaz y superficial que el mundo promete a través de la riqueza o el poder, sino más bien la alegría profunda e inalterable que solo Dios puede dar. Finalmente, los magos estaban tan asombrados al encontrarse con el recién nacido Jesús, se postraron ante él y "abrieron sus tesoros y le ofrecieron regalos". As our celebration of Christmas continues, today we observe the great feast of The Epiphany of the Lord. The word “epiphany” comes from Greek and means manifestation or appearance. The stewardship way of life is one in which we live in grateful response to God’s countless manifestations in our lives. Our Gospel passage, from Matthew, has much to teach us about stewardship, through the actions of the magi. As good stewards, the magi were watching for manifestations of God’s presence in their lives. “We have seen the star at its rising,” they say. Good stewards are keenly aware of the “star” of God’s presence and His gifts in their lives. It is this awareness that fills them with gratitude and the desire to both worship God and share His gifts with others. The magi, upon seeing the manifestation of God’s presence in their lives, “were overjoyed.” Good stewards, who live with the awareness of God’s presence and gifts to them, simply can’t help but be

filled with joy. Not necessarily the fleeting and superficial kind of joy the world promises through wealth or power, but rather the deep, unalterable joy only God can give. Finally, the magi were so filled with awe upon encountering the newborn Jesus, they prostrated themselves before him and “opened their treasures and offered him gifts.” This is precisely why good stewards generously share their material gifts — as a loving act of worship to an extravagantly loving God. Let us rejoice in God’s manifestations in our lives and be watchful for the new ways He is calling us to share ourselves and our gifts in gratitude to our King in the year ahead.

RECONOCER A DIOS EN LOS MOMENTOS ORDINARIOS Penitencias y Oraciones La gloria de Dios, ahora, es más suave que la luz de las velas. debajo de las vigas de un granero: La paz eterna está durmiendo en el heno Y la Sabiduría nace en secreto en un establo con techo de paja. * Cuando era más joven, escribí música y grabé el poema de Tho-mas Merton, "Epiphany Carol." Si nunca lo has leído, búscalo en Internet. Las palabras de Merton son profundas y pintan una ima-gen de la maravilla de Jesús, el recién nacido Rey de Reyes, acostado en una simple cama de paja. RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS Penances and Prayers God’s glory, now, is kindled gentler than candlelight under the rafters of a barn: Eternal Peace is sleeping in the hay, And Wisdom’s born in secret in a straw-roofed stable.* When I was younger, I wrote music to and recorded Thomas Merton’s poem, “Epiphany Carol.” If you have never read it, search it out on the internet. Merton’s words are profound and paint a picture of the awesomeness of Jesus, the newborn King of Kings, lying in a simple straw bed. The shepherds and Wise Men are drawn to pay homage to the One who has been born above all others and brings with him hope for a broken world. As Merton correctly points out, the gifts we are called to bring to this baby and lay at his feet are our prayers and penances, next to those gifts of worldly wealth. What is it that you have to bring to the stable on this feast of the Epiphany of the Lord? Unless those prayers and penances lead to a new way of living, our gifts will be void of meaning. What we lay before him speaks to the change in us that he has given to us by his birth. Our daily stew-ardship is resembled in those gifts. If we are to truly echo the kingdom of God in our lives and actions, what we ultimately offer to him is no less than our entire selves. This baby will give his entire self for us, and his work must continue through our hands and feet. LA EPIFANIA DEL SEÑOR/ THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA (Gospel Meditation) La Epifanía del Señor es una de las Solemnidades que más disfrutan los niños en la comunidad hispana (Fiesta de los Reyes Magos), por aquello de que llegan los regalos y las piñatas llenando de alegría este tiempo navideño. Las familias se preparan para la ocasión y disfrutan el reunirse con amigos y familiares cercanos. Sin embargo, aparte de regalos y fiesta, hay muchas cosas que aprender sobre está solemnidad y, una de ellas es lo que significa la palabra Epifanía, Manifestación del Señor. Cristo se revela de muchas maneras como: Señor y Rey. Y algo importante, la forma de como Dios se manifiesta en Jesús con hechos (Milagros). Todas las manifestaciones de Jesús en su tiempo histórico fueron luces de amor para la humanidad. Las lecturas de hoy, de alguna manera, y de formas diferentes, manifiestan quien es Cristo para el que cree en Él. El profeta Isaías dice: “Levanta los ojos y mira alrededor: todos se reúnen y vienen a ti; tus hijos llegan de lejos, a tus hijas las traen en brazos.” San Pablo aclara que “también los paganos son coherederos de la misma herencia, miembros del mismo cuerpo y participes de la misma promesa en Jesucristo.” El Evangelio de Mateo nos orienta hacia el punto clave de quien se manifiesta: “Y tú, Belén, tierra de Judá, no eres en manera alguna la menor entre las ciudades ilustres de Judá, pues de ti saldrá un jefe, que será el pastor de mi pueblo, Israel”. Estos pasajes de la Sagrada Escritura muestran la universalidad del Mesías, que ha venido a redimir a toda la humanidad. ¡Feliz Epifanía! VIVIR LA LITURGIA - INSPIRACIÓN DE LA SEMANA ¿Alguna vez has experimentado un momento en tu vida en el que todo se unió y quedó abundantemente claro? Es posible que hayas estado confundido acerca de algo, en la oscuridad, en un punto de duda, o no estabas claro cómo actuar. Es posible que hayas cuestionado la motivación de alguien y te hayas encontrado llegando a una conclusión equivocada. Luego, de la nada, llegó la lucidez y la realidad se aclaro. ¡Experimentaste una especie de epifanía! Hoy, celebramos la manifestación de Cristo a todas las naciones del mundo. ¿Se te ha ocurrido que Jesucristo es la respuesta que la humanidad ha estado buscando? Jesús es verdaderamente el principio y el fin de todas las cosas y la clave para comprender la presencia de Dios en cada corazón humano. PREGUNTAS DE LA SEMANA - INVITAMOS A TODOS LOS PARROQUIANOS A REFLEXIONAR Y RESPONDER Primera Lectura A raíz del regreso de Israel del exilio en Babilonia, Isaías profetizó la restauración de Jerusalén marcada por dones que van desde las "riquezas del mar" hasta la "riqueza de los pueblos." ¿Qué dones recibes de tu fe en Jesús? Segunda Lectura Pablo escribió sobre el "misterio" que le fue revelado; es decir, que los paganos y los judíos (todos los creyentes) eran "coherederos, miembros del mismo cuerpo" de Jesucristo. ¿Por qué algunas personas pueden resistir este mensaje de inclusión? The Messiah wasn’t coming for them, not in the minds of Jesus’ contemporaries. These men were astrologers. They were adept at reading portents in the sky, a practice condemned in the Mosaic covenant. Still, to the best of their knowledge and awareness, they were seeking the truth. This truth led them to journey from their own homeland to honor a king they’d never met, one they couldn’t be sure truly existed. “‘We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.’” Who do you know seeks God so tenaciously? “Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,” the Gospel tells us. Who are the seekers in your own life? Maybe it’s your cautiously curious co-worker, the neighbor who unexpectedly found peace on a yoga retreat, or your desperately angry child who has chosen, for now, to go their own way. Perhaps they’re not overtly headed for Jesus now, not yet. But they may well be seekers of truth in ways we didn’t expect. Our invitation is to listen, inquire, and give directions when appropriate. The magi and modern-day seekers can inspire us as well. When is the last time you sought God’s truth so tenaciously? As believers, it can perhaps be easy to become desensitized to the Christmas season and to the miraculous reality we recently celebrated. Mass may have been lovely, but so was the succulent roast beef, the crisp smell of evergreen, and the warm glow of family. Consider asking yourself, “God, do I know you as well as I should? Would I journey as far as the magi to meet You, if I could? Do I journey to meet You daily in prayer? What do those answer say about me, and about our relationship?” Perhaps we, like the magi, can once again be “overjoyed” at seeing the Light of the World. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Have you ever experienced a time in your life when everything came together and became abundantly clear? You may have been confused about something, in the dark, at a point of doubt, or unclear as to how to act. You may have questioned someone’s motivation and found yourself coming to the wrong conclusion. Then out of nowhere, the insight came and reality dawned. You experienced an epiphany of sorts! Today, we celebrate Christ’s manifestation to all of the nations of the world. Has it dawned on you yet that Jesus Christ is the answer humanity has been seeking? Jesus is truly the beginning and end of all things and the key to understanding God’s presence in every human heart. Once this real Epiphany dawns on us, we can never see God, ourselves, or one another in any other way. The Divine Light illumines everything and connects the dots. QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK - WE INVITE TO ALL PARISHIONERS TO REFLECT AND RESPOND TO SCRIPTURE First Reading In the wake of Israel’s return from exile in Babylon, Isaiah prophesied the restoration of Jerusalem marked by gifts ranging from the “riches of the sea” to the “wealth of nations.” What gifts do you receive from your faith in Jesus? Second Reading Paul wrote of the “mystery” that was revealed to him; namely, the Gentiles and the Jews (all believers) were “coheirs, members of the same body” of Jesus Christ. Why might some people resist this message of inclusivity? Gospel Reading Matthew tells us that the visit of the magi was wrought with fear, danger, and deception. The Gift That Keeps on Giving Scripture: Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God– children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but

born of God. John 1:12-13 This tie I am wearing was one of my Christmas gifts. I really do like it. Did you receive a lot of gifts for Christmas? I'm sure that you did. Of all of the gifts that you received for Christmas, what was the very best one? What was your favorite? (Give the children an opportunity to tell you about their favorite gift.) You know, there is one thing that I have learned about Christmas gifts. No matter how much you enjoy receiving them, they just don't last. Some of you may have received new clothes. They look nice and you enjoy wearing them, but sooner or later, they wear out, go out of style, or you outgrow them. I am sure that many of you received toys. You really enjoy the toys, but eventually, they either get broken or you get tired of playing with them. Perhaps you got some candy. Well, when you eat it, it is gone. Except for what you wind up wearing around your waist. There is one Christmas gift that is different. It never wears out. It never goes out of style. You will never become tired of it. It is like the Energizer Bunny -- it is a gift that keeps on giving year, after year, after year. Do you know what that gift is? It is the true gift that Christmas is all about. It is God's gift to us. His Son, Jesus. The Bible tells us that all who receive Jesus and believe in his name become the children of God! When we become the children of God, we have all of the rights and privileges of being His child. He will love us, protect us, and provide everything that we need. The best part is that it never ends. The Bible says that "kindness and love will be with us every day of our life, and we will live forever in the house of the LORD." (Psalm 23:6 paraphrased) I enjoy giving and receiving gifts at Christmas, but I think it is important for us to remember that the greatest gift of all was God's gift to us. It is the gift that keeps on giving! Dear Father, we thank you for loving us so much that you gave your Son so that we too could become your children. In Jesus' name we pray.
