Free marriage licenses for active military

The Islip Town Board is proud to have recently approved a res-olution to waive the town fee for a marriage license, when ei-ther party applying is an active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces.  Marriage licenses are $40. In August, New York State waived its portion of $22.50. The Islip Town Board followed suit, voting unanimously at the October town board meeting to waive the remaining $17.50. Islip Town supervisor Angie Car-penter, along with members of the town board, unanimously approved the resolution at the meeting. Recent changes to New York State’s Domestic Rela-tions Law now allows for town-ships to waive their portion of the fee. “In the Town of Islip, ac-tive members of the military can now obtain a marriage license entirely for free,” said Carpenter. “This is a small way of showing our appreciation to our service-men and women, who give of themselves each and every day to ensure our freedom.”

High school to change trajectory

New principal presents goals moving forward

BY RANDALL WASZYNSKI

Jon LaRochester, in his first academic year as the prin-cipal of Islip High School, shared his goals with the school community at Tuesday’s board of education meeting at the high school.

“For six months, we have been putting together a three-to-five-year plan,” LaRochester said, adding that data reinforcing those goals was presented to the board at a previous meeting, behind closed doors. “There is a lot of work that we have started to put together.”

LaRochester said the primary goal of the comprehen-sive plan is better preparing high school students for higher education, coming from the school district.

“Going through some of the metrics and identifying, I think that the part that would spark some conversation has to do with how colleges and universities view stu-dents from Islip,” LaRochester added. “When they just show up as a test number or test score, a GPA and a CED number, and looking at some of those indices and saying, ‘well, how do we increase our mastery in mathematics? Do we offer labs in certain classes?’”

LaRochester made use of the phrase “elevating your academic profile” as a school district when colleges and universities view a student’s particular profile from this particular school.

Although the high school offers 18 AP courses in var-ious subjects, only a portion of them are considered accredited college-level courses. LaRochester said that increasing the amount of courses that not only grant stu-dents more opportunity in terms of a university’s excel-lence, but also promoting challenging feats for students is a crucial aspect of the comprehensive plan.

“I have some experience in conducting a study that more than 200 universities and colleges surveyed their process, their procedures and looking at how valuable re-gent scores, AP, and the depth of a student’s transcript,” he said. “For example, an 85 in an AP class is significantly better than a 95 in a non-AP class. The research shows that the rigor of that environment is better for kids.”

The first line of order, he explained, is to accomplish this goal is forming committees to begin to explore the plans. The second highlighted goal he expanded upon was supported increased leadership opportunities for students, featuring “the culture of yes.”

“I want kids to have experiences with research, with public speaking, with personal finance... we’re looking at all those things, and we’re trying to make sure that there is real leadership, not kids just with titles,” LaRochester explained. “That is that culture of ‘yes.’ I will show up, but [the students] are planning the whole thing.”

Lastly, LaRochester touched on the importance of edu-cating students in the realm of technology. On the other side of that coin, however, is the district being mindful of their part in utilizing the best technology for their web

presence and social media activity.“Parents of students born in 2006: Those children

have never known a world that is not 1080p, Bluetooth, hi-def... they have never used a CD,” he said. “They are digital everything — instant gratification. At some point, those kids are going to be juniors and seniors in high school, and the letter getting backpacked home is not how they consume information. As school districts, we need to be able to maintain traditional communication with letters and e-mails and connect that, but we need a giant social media platform. There are parents who don’t want to click 17 times. We are evaluating our links and finding dead links.”

LaRochester said all the data and ins and outs of the plan were not able to be presented at the board meet-ing because of time constraints. The Islip Bulletin will be reporting more intricate aspects of the drawn-out three-to-five-year plan in coming weeks. n

6 ISLIP BULLETIN - DECEMBER 12, 2019

Americans spend more than $7 billion on wrapping paper each year, according to Sun-dale Research. Also, according to a Stanford study, we throw away 25 percent more trash during the Thanksgiving-to-New Year’s holiday period than in any other time of year, equaling about 25 million tons of garbage or about 1 million extra tons per week. That study also says that if every family used just 2 feet of hol-iday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet.

Don’t be part of the statistics — try to be less wasteful this season. If every American family wrapped just three presents in reused materi-als, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields.

We have the perfect solution to your holiday wrapping needs: newspaper. And we have so much of it that we are happy to share it with you. Come on down to the Islip Bulletin at our family of hometown newspapers’ headquar-ters at the Long Island Advance, 20 Medford Ave. in Patchogue, for some free alternative wrapping paper.

Also, we encourage you to color or to print prettier designs on our paper to make it a little more festive.

And, if you do, don’t forget to email us at [email protected] or tag us on Facebook with a photo of your best newspaper-wrapped gift, and we will be sure to feature the gifts af-ter the holidays.

Still, if wrapping paper is your go-to, be sure that it’s completely paper-based, without the use of glitter, foil or plastics. That way, you can at the very least recycle it.

There’s always something exciting happening in our local school districts. Here are a few of the highlights from the past few weeks.

BAY SHOREMemory match

At Bay Shore Middle School, students in Ms. Soto’s class-es reviewed how to name professions in Spanish with a game of “memory match.” They also wrote a sentence for each set they matched.

Rhyming wordsAt Brook Avenue School, students in Mrs. Obloj’s class

practiced identifying rhyming words using sorting activ-ities.

Matching wordsAt Brook Avenue School, dual language students in Mrs.

Morales and Mrs. Hespeler’s class  love expanding their language skills. They recently practiced Spanish syntax and meaning by matching familiar words to their correct pronouns.

Unity Day at Gardiner Manor

Students and staff at Gardiner Manor School celebrated Unity Day by wearing orange to unite against bullying.

Scholars of the month

Each month, Gardiner Manor School recognizes Schol-ars of the Month. These scholars are selected for being role models for their classmates. They exhibit good citi-zenship and responsibility and are hard workers. Congrat-ulations to the scholars selected for October!

orated trees. East Islip Interact Club, Islip Rotary, Youth Enrichment Services, Pop-py’s Angels, Islip Booster Club, Kiwanis of the Islips and Bay Shore, two chambers of commerce, and many others took part in the festivities as well.

Various businesses ingrained in the Islip community were present and decorating, too, including salons, flower shops, funeral homes and hospitals, like Good Samaritan and Southside Hospital. Actually, South-side Hospital purchased two Christmas trees.

“It is great to be out here with every-body decorating the trees for the hol-iday and having some fun,” said Eddie Fraser, Northwell Health’s vice president of community relations. “This is what we do at Northwell; we are out here in every community, and it is important for us to be a part of all this grassroots stuff that everybody touches every day.” Jane Miller of Caroline’s Flower Shoppe said this is her third year participating in the tree-decorating event at Brookwood Hall. Miller is a member of the Islip Rotary, Islip Chamber of Commerce and Islip Food for Hope, which are all well-established lo-

cal organizations and groups that have a particular emphasis on giving back to the community.

“I help out every way I can. I do a lot of donations for fundraising, so I make flow-er arrangements for a lot of different rea-sons.” n

Youth Enrichment Services purchased a tree at the Festival of Trees and was primar-ily decorated by its members.

Jane Miller of Caroline’s Flower Shoppe showcases pristine decorative skills.

Marianne Anello and Marie Galeazzi, co-presidents of the Islip Booster Club, took on a purple-and-gold theme with their tree.

Parade concludes with tree lighting at Town Hall

BY RANDALL WASZYNSKI

Residents crowded the curb all down Main Street in Islip Hamlet to see the show-case of the holiday season at this year’s Santa Parade, hosted by the Islip Chamber of Commerce. Various local groups, includ-ing school bands, bagpipers and dance companies, marched in a parade featuring Christmas music, vibrant lights and well-known holiday characters.

Santa, of course, made his way down Main Street, and hitched a ride on one of Islip Fire Department’s trucks, toward the rear of the parade. The Grinch and Frosty the Snowman hung around the stage set up on the grounds of Islip Town Hall near Tellers.

After the parade, residents gathered be-fore the stage, where Islip’s public figures commenced the tree lighting ceremony. Three students from Islip High School each sang a Christmas tune of their choice.

And then, anticipated with a countdown, the tall evergreen to the left of the stage lit in bright white lights, followed by “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” playing over the speakers. n

Santa visits Main Street

Southside Hospital’s Island of Misfit Toys showcased characters from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and other discarded toys.

After the Long Island Ducks won the 2019 Atlantic League Champions, they swung by the Santa Parade to celebrate.

Santa hitched a ride back to his sleigh, which he surely parked in an undisclosed location for safety purposes.

The old-time fire engine hosted the Grinch, who stole the show.

The event concluded with a festive tree lighting on the lawn of Town Hall.

es were distributed to students, who were encouraged to bring in spare change. Throughout the two weeks of the contest, students brought back their full boxes and club members weighed, recorded and tallied each home-room’s coinage. The homeroom with the greatest weight at the end of the two-week period won the competition and breakfast.

“This year, Mrs. Avella’s period 1A class won with a whopping 24 pounds, beating out the second-place class by 8 pounds,” said adviser Laura O’Donnell.

WEST ISLIPFire safety made fun

The West Islip Fire Department recently held a fire safety presentation at West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School. Students listened to firefighters speak, watched a teacher gear up in firefighter equipment, and then toured a fire truck.

Middle-schoolers make connections Organized by the counseling departments, both of West

Islip’s middle schools – Beach Street and Udall Road – im-plemented the Start With Hello program this year, which teaches students the skills they need to reach out and in-clude those who may be dealing with chronic social isola-tion and create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their classroom, school and community.

The program, coordinated by Sandy Hook Promise, in-cluded icebreaker activities such as a “Hey Day,” in which students filled out name tags to initiate saying hello to each other; a “Be Kind Day,” in which students posted pos-itive affirmations in a Kindness Corner for all to see and read; and an “I Am” wall, photo booths, friendship chains and scavenger hunts. Students from the Helping Hands Club and Diversity Club volunteered their time to assist with the activities.

“It was a wonderful week of meeting new friends, mak-ing connections and building community,” said Beach Street principal Andrew O’Farrell.

Islip Hamlet Historical Society Holiday House Tour held last weekend

BY MONICA MUSETTI-CARLIN

It’s truly a Christmas miracle to have your home ful-ly decorated and ready in time to greet your family and friends and engage in the joyous holiday festivities tra-ditionally shared together. For the seven homes decked with boughs of holly, evergreens, candlelight and cookies that participated in the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet’s 26th annual Holiday House Tour, all that’s left to do for the homeowners now is heat up some hot chocolate, sit back and enjoy.

Every home on this past Sunday’s tour had something uniquely special; whether it was historical relevance with-in the town of Islip or the owner’s creative decorating de-tails, there was something for everyone to relish.

“We begin the process of choosing homes to show in June,” said fundraising chair Chris Vanasco, who oversaw the house tour.

They keep a running list of who has been on the tour in previous years, as well as updated maps of new home-owners in the area whose newer homes may have been built on historic grounds or architecturally interesting, in addition to the actual historic homes.

“We hope they’ll be a nice fit, and of course want to show their homes. Sometimes people call us and want to know how to sign up to be on the tour,” he added. “Many people learn about it through word-of-mouth. We also go door-to-door knocking.”

One of the homeowners is the 12th generation direct descendent of John Alden, who came over on the May-flower. The home, though built in 1966, stands on land once owned by the 19th-century land baron Daniel D. Con-over. Another home was a white colonial first constructed in the 1800s. Having been remodeled several times, the basement still bears boat timber originally used as beams for the home’s foundation.

A stately brick colonial built in 1951 was constructed on the Welles property, which had been home to many grand estates along the South Shore of Long Island in the late 19th and early 20th century. The homeowners meticulous-ly decorated it with touches of Victorian elegance.

Liz Finnegan, recently retired editor of the Islip Bulletin, said, “It was a lot of work, but we enjoyed doing it.” Her husband Robert, former Islip Town historian, stood at the front door, donned in a period top hat and costume wel-coming guests into their home.

Once inside, docents in every room were dressed in lav-ish, historically accurate outfits designed by Jane Mizrach, who canvasses thrift shops and vintage clothing stores for garments, then adapts a costume to fit each docent—an excellent touch.

Doris Getty’s home, which stands on a block designated by the society for the Preservation of Long Island as “The South Bay District,” was showcased 20 years ago and again on this year’s tour. Getty said she participates because it’s a way to support a nonprofit and the community.

There was also a United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots collection bin stationed outside this home to collect unwrapped Christmas gifts for families in need. Getty’s home, as did most of the others, had their dining room table set with their best china, crystal and linens, readied for a festive holiday meal. Many tour guests said they were so inspired by such beautiful, decorative touches that they were anxious to rush home and get their own homes read-ied using some new ideas they’d seen.

This community effort was successfully executed by friends and neighbors of the Historical Society, who in addition to the tour collected 75 raffle baskets donated by local businesses and Islip neighbors, which were auc-tioned off after the tour at the Islip United Methodist Church. Everyone was gathered together giddily chatting about the day of fun, all while munching trays of cookies and drinking warm beverages.

As the society’s largest fundraiser, the Holiday House Tour generates monies to be used for a scholarship fund; four programs a year at the Islip Library; donations to oth-er local organizations; and most recently, 95 Civil War let-ters were acquired that will be turned into a book.

To learn more about having your home included in a fu-ture house tour or if you are interested in joining, write to: Historical Society of Islip Hamlet, PO Box 601, Islip, NY 11751, or visit their website at www.isliphamlethistory.org.
